Antawn Jamison, Gilbert Arenas lead Wizards to comeback win over 76ers
What can I say? Our man Antawn was awesome tonight. He willed us back in the third quarter and finished things in the fourth.
Gilbert Arenas too was great, which makes it even sadder that he'll probably get suspended and torpedo our season for good. But that's stuff to ponder for another time. For tonight, let's celebrate. We swept somebody!

We get Miller back and lose Arenas. Extension of injury bug?
Is it safe to say we will never ever have all our players available at once?
Oh why trade Jamison that to me is the worst move you can do. Who trades a consistent 30 point player ?
Oh I think Deshawns presence did alot to spark our team and win, call me crazy.

to his credit -
he knows this. and is hardly shooting at all now. he knows his role, for sure

but if he could hit just one shot..it would keep the defense honest..cmon he is a PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL PLAYER and should be able to make 1 basket per game!!!
this is quite true
just saying that last year and earlier this year he was shooting more and thus more of a detriment to the team

I'm not sure what game you were watching
To be fair I was so depressed that I fast forwarded from half-time until we were back within 10 points, but Deshawn looks completely broken down to me.
Nick Young and Gilbert’s newly discovered ability to actually direct traffic and deliver crisp passes are what sparked.

trading jamison would probably hurt us. only reason to trade jamison would be to do him a personal favor and trade him to contender. mike jones posted this yesterday and i have to say i agree. jamison isnt going to win anything here. might as well at least give him a chance in exchange for all his hard work and dedication.
arenas
very sad that arenas is going to get suspended.
Deshawn was terrific tonight… he really hounded both AI’s.
Let’s go into Cleveland tomorrow for one last swan song. It would be fitting that tomorrows game be the last with the Big Three— and they top if off with a WIN against the hated Cavs.
think so...hope its only for 8-10 games...but Stern is a gun control freak and might suspend him for the season
by CVC on Jan 5, 2010 9:54 PM EST up reply actions
i agree that stern will err on the side of too long a suspension
but i’ve seen you say that it’s because of his personal feelings. i disagree about this. he’s been pretty lenient on other gun incidents. i think he will go for a big one purely for public perception. this story has wide-spread media attention. and before he’s a liberal, gun hating socialist communist (tongue planted firmly in my cheek), he’s a business man who needs his league to be seen in as positive a light as possible.

What makes you think he’s a “gun control freak”? I wasn’t aware.
by MR on Jan 5, 2010 10:27 PM EST up reply actions
or don't waste your time (you probably shouldn't have asked in the first place)
i think stern once intimated that players packing guns aren’t making themselves safer. therefore he is a liberal gun hating nutcase who wants to burn the constitution and should be put down at all costs. kind of like phil jackson who said the same thing. i mean, he must be some kind of commie to outlaw guns on nba property.
by DarrellWalkerFan on Jan 5, 2010 11:03 PM EST up reply actions
my point is Stern is likely to give gil an unprecedented suspension, in part, because he wants to send a larger message about guns in the NBA.
I don't think it is accurate to say that Jamison carried the team in the third quarter
The team really worked the ball inside in the third quarter, and Jamison was the natural person to get the ball. Jamison might have scored the most points, but it was a real team effort to move the ball and get it to the right spots.
have to disagree
Jamison willed this team to that comeback in the third quarter. He drove the ball inside more so than the team working the ball inside. Jamison had fire and would not let this game slip away unless he had something to say about it. It was indeed a team effort but it was ignited and fueled by jamison.
by SkinsWizStangs on Jan 5, 2010 9:52 PM EST up reply actions
jamison was working outside in
no more watching him try to seal his man or get position close to the hoop. you want him close to the hoop you’re gonna have to do a ball reversal to get it to him there.
aj was awesome tonight.

isnt Arenas now averaging the most assists in his career?
by CVC on Jan 5, 2010 9:39 PM EST up reply actions
Without even looking it up
I’d have to say that’’s correct. Though to be fair, his assist average in past years was not all that incredible.
For his career - Arenas has averaged 5.6 Assists per game....
This year, he’s averaging 7.1 assists per game (including tonight’s 14 Assists)….
His assist ratio, usually around 17 or 18 in his career, is 21.1 this year. (Assist Ratio is the percentage of a player’s possessions that ends in an assist. )
So – YES , Arenas is clearly averaging more assists this year than in years past.
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
that's more assists than Kobe and about the same as Lebron

Ok
Let’s just look at Eastern Conference Point Guards….
Which EC Point Guards are averaging 20 points and 6 or more assists?
There is one…………. drum roll please…………………………………………. Gilbert Arenas…
Arenas is third in the EC in assists per game, behind Rajon Rondo (9.8 per game) and LeBron (7.8)
Just looking at PG’s in the Western Conference… there’s only Chris Paul (20.5 & 10.5)
(Steve Nash 18.4 & 11.2 , and Deron Williams 19.5 & 9.8 are close)
That’s why this gun charge is such a tragedy – because I think that finally Gilbert was starting to understand Flip’s system – as he was averaging over 8 assists a game over the last 14 games (and going up – as he was averaging almost 9 assists per game over the last 6 games)… Imagine the accolades Gil would have gotten from the sycophant National Media for turning himself into a “pass first” Point Guard (while still scoring over 22 a game)…!!!! His would be mentioned in the same breath as Paul and Nash…. as the best PG’s in the league.
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Ummm he carried the team

Damn 19 points 14 assist watched the game and didn’t even notice the asssist number.
We need Arenas man! :(. Frack please don’t suspend him.
Anybody know what’s up with tearing the team apart is that really happening? Who’s going? Please not Antwan! Please send off Boykins, James, Taser and Critt thank you! Is Arenas going?
by Unxpekted on Jan 5, 2010 9:42 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Personally, I’d trade Caron before anyone else, and keep Arenas and Jamison. He’s a talented player, but his effort level changes with the wind.
I think you do that if the team was 18-14 instead of 11-21
Where you think one move might spark a shift from being okay to being really good.
At this point, I think rebuilding is the only option, so you have to move Jamison if you can to balance the payroll.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I don't take as much from the win-loss column
Too many games lost by a few points. If they can get a hustle, impact guy in Caron’s place, that win-loss percentage would turn around quicker than you might think. I wonder if Detroit would be willing to part with Tayshaun? (Mindless, wishful speculation, of course – I have no idea how the salaries match up).
It's also the type of trade you make if Gil isn't about to get suspended for an extended period of time
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Yes
And it’s time that people start getting real about the severity of what happened. How many times must this be repeated? He took unloaded guns into an NBA locker room. He laid them out as an admittedly stupid practical joke. That’s the full extent of it. There’s not going to be an extended suspension. There’s no precedent for it, and there’s no reason for it.
20 YEARS
comcast reporting that the maximum jail time for unregistered handguns in DC is 4 years PER GUN. Theoretically possible that Gil could get sentenced to 20 years in jail. But…in reality, he probably won’t serve any time. Its very scary sounding, though.
Having reviewed the D.C. registration laws, I know that that’s incorrect. But now they’re saying that he had no license for the guns (?!), which is different, and that may be what they’re talking about.
He had no DC license
And I’m pretty sure you don’t need a license in Virginia, which is where he got them.
Just clarifying.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I’m going to ook into the DC code some more, but intuitively, this just doesn’t make sense. If he bought the guns in VA, and VA doesn’t have any licensure requirement, why would D.C. require him to obtain both a registration and a license? Also, isn’t a license generally for usage of a firearm? He didn’t use a firearm, so why the need for a license?
Here's what I found:
Apparently you do have to both register and license a firearm in D.C. Here it is:
D.C. Code Section 22-4504. “Carrying concealed weapons; possession of weapons during commission of crime of violence; penalty” [Formerly § 22-3204]
(a) No person shall carry within the District of Columbia either openly or concealed on or about their person, a pistol, without a license issued pursuant to District of Columbia law, or any deadly or dangerous weapon capable of being so concealed. Whoever violates this section shall be punished as provided in § 22-4515, except that:
(1) A person who violates this section by carrying a pistol, without a license issued pursuant to District of Columbia law, or any deadly or dangerous weapon, in a place other than the person’s dwelling place, place of business, or on other land possessed by the person, shall be fined not more than $ 5,000 or imprisoned for not more than 5 years, or both….
Again, “place of business” doesn’t work for Arenas, because he doesn’t own the Verizon Center. By the terms of the Code, I believe that’s 5 years for every count, and 1 count for every gun he brought into D.C.
By the way
They’re not kidding when they say that D.C. has the strictest gun laws in the nation. And as far as I know, this section was not overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court decision of the last term, which overturned an outright ban on handguns.
Not familiar with VA gun laws
But that doesn’t sound right. What state doesn’t require you to get a license for a gun? I’ll try to look into this.
You're right, I might be wrong about this
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Well, crazy as it sounds
A brief Google search suggests that Virginia doesn’t require people to get a license for a gun. Wow, VA must have a serious gun lobby. It’s all those hill people.
The NRA is headquartered in VA.

And when asked after the game whether he had a license for the guns
Arenas said that he can’t talk about that – meaning, no, he didn’t. So yes, that’s trouble for Arenas.
No.
It means he can’t talk about it.
by jones-y on Jan 5, 2010 11:21 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
No, for real - it means he doesn't have any licenses for them
He got them in VA, and VA apparently doesn’t issue firearms licenses. And if he didn’t register it in D.C. (which is confirmed, I believe), so he damn sure didn’t get any licenses there.
TOTALLY AGREE- TRADE BUTLER
Hed be happier on a team where he’s the 2nd scoring option. Miller could easily fill in at SF, and be the catch and shoot player the team needs at that spot.
That’s an interesting point – Miller is a hustle, impact guy. And he’s starter caliber. I say, Caron’s got to be the main trade target right now.
Butler is a great player. But when Gil or other PG’s get him the ball, he tends to pump fake, stutter step, dribble too much… before he puts the shot up. In contrast, Miller is a jump-shooter, with unlimited range.
He’s also a better rebouder. A starting line up of Gil, Foye/Nick, Miller, AJ, and Brendon would be our most competitive offensive and defensive team.
im liking starting blatche instead of one of the guards, and moving butler to the 2
so if butler was gone, miller at the 2, AJ 3 and blatche at 4
If you're going zone anyway, then I agree
Man-to-man, that lineup gets killed defensively.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

not sure AJ can match up against...
….some of the better 3’s in the NBA. I mean he did an okay job against Richard Jeffferson the other night. But he’d have big problems against Lebron, Paul Pierce, Rudy Gay, etc.
But what the heck, let’s try it.
They usually play zone when he's at the three, so matchups aren't a huge issue
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
true...i dont think it would work every time, and i dont know if AJ can play the 3 every night. but for sure against some teams
I mean, after all
how much worse can Jamison be guarding SF’s? He’s terrible guarding PF’s…!!
At least guarding SF’s, he’d be playing mostly against wing players (read: more jump shots, fewer post ups) – maybe it could work….. even in man-to-man.
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
He'd then be out of position to rebound.
Size isn’t the only reason wing players get fewer rebounds.
by jones-y on Jan 6, 2010 7:40 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
But Then
Blatche would be, assuming the zone doesn’t take him out of position. But with Haywood, Blatche, Jamison, Butler, and Arenas, we would have a size advantage at most, if not all positions, so that might make up for poor positioning.

To be fair, most of Jamison’s drives to the basket in the second half would’ve probably been three point or long two point jumpers in the first half. I don’t know if it was an actual tactical adjustment at halftime or if flip just begged his team to stop taking so many jumpers…

Hope he plays tomorrow nite against the Cavs. If he doesn’t, their three-headed center (shaq-varajeo-big Z) will absolutely dominate the paint. we wont have a chance
if we woop the Cavs stern will for-surely suspend Areanas the whole season to keep the Cav safe until they play Kobe in the finals
that's right>>>
lets suppose that the Wiz snuck into the 8th spot, while the CAVs got the top seed. We could take em with Gil. We’ve played them so many times over the past 4 years, we know them inside and out.

and it was one of the last times we’ll see him for a long while (possibly ever)

He’s the first player to bring a gun into an NBA locker room, and he brought 4. I’m pretty sure that’s unprecedented.

not sure if finding a gun in a player's bag or pillow
is the same as someone taking them out (4 of them) and using them in a gag – particularly when it’s a potential felony to have them in that area code – and also when you show them to a teammate you’re feuding with who’s pissed at you and who throws the gun across the room. for a franchise that changed its name as a statement against gun violence. and for the franchise player to do it. not really a precedent to go on there sorry.

So I guess that's supposed to be incentive not to reply?
I’ve stated several times on this blog that I’m not the type to get emotionally involved in sports franchises. What I am concerned about, however is seeing yet another young person of color (I am one) facing punishment by the legal system. That’s a bit outside the scope of this blog, but since you asked..
Look I understand (for the second time) that the sensationalism of this case may impact the judgement handed down by stern, but I also (for the second time) don’t think a season-long suspension is a foregone conclusion due to that. Especially given the suspensions handed out in preceding incidents of a similar nature a.k.a. precedents…
by jones-y on Jan 5, 2010 11:33 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
i agree
a season long suspension is not a foregone conclusion.
but again, if it was just finding guns in gil’s locker, there are several precedents for that, you’re right. that’s not all this is though. he took it at least one level beyond that. so we’ll see what that extra dimension gets him from the commish.
i agree it would be overkill for gil to do jail time. a felony is probably too much too. but he’s got to get at least a misdemeanor, a fine, and some community service, and he’s got to start paying attention to gun laws and such. it’s really not much to ask.

but with the state of the economy ( Love that phrase ) Stern may not have the lee way to just ban one of his money makers to the sidelines for anything more than a couple games. Gil is getting better by the week and keeps seats in not only verizon center but when he travels as well. I am just saying that there is more involved here than Stern bitch smacking someone like he did in the Artest melee for example.
Also this is America where guns and gun violence is pretty much an accepted fact of life.

What is one level beyond an unloaded gun in a locker?
A LOADED gun on a Plane? (Sebastian Telfair)
Firing a weapon at least 5 times outside a strip club? (Stephen Jackson)
Riding around with 3 loaded pistols, a knife, and a pistol grip Shotgun? (Delonte West)

Keys to beating the CAVS
Lebron is going to get his points and assists. Caron and DeShawn must focus on bothering Lebron
Gil and the team should focus on stopping Mo Williams, who has been on a tear.
Brendon and Andray have to play solid at Center, and avoid getting fouled out (which is tough against Shaq).
AJ has to have another monster game in order for us to have a chance.
Nick Young has to be aggressive offensively.
And we need a lot of luck.
yep
and we all know how much luck the wiz seem to get as a franchise. plus, it’s in cleveland.

that i think butler did time on a gun and drug charge, so maybe he doesn’t find this all that amusing.

Butler was in the picture, just behind the photographer
Someone’s arm is there and it looks like his.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
dunno
i think the photographer sensibly stood behind boykins to get the shot. i’m not seeing how caron could be between boykins and dsteve there.
it’s probably moot ‘cause i’m probably off target but.

You're right it's possible
I just wouldn’t assume Caron wasn’t in the picture for sure.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Also, he probably got it with a crazy-large zoom lens from the baseline
That’s where photographers sit.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I haven't been been keeping up with GunGate fully
but whats the deal with Butler not being in the photo. Why does that matter?
it probably doesn't
i was wondering if crittendon would get as much of a laugh out of that. then i realized that i didn’t see caron in that picture either, maybe he wanted no part of that nonsense.
but probbaly means nothing at all

Seriously
People out there need to relax. What Gilbert did in the locker room was wrong, immature, and he definitely made a huge mistake in decision making. But this picture is the goofball Gil that we know and it’s taken on the court of a G-A-M-E. These guys are together for a good portion of the year, and there’s nothing wrong with poking fun of yourself and camaraderie and making your teammates laugh.

yeah but
at the same time he’s really got to show that he’s taking this seriously, that there are repercussions. this is actually funny if he gets the bigger picture. but that’s unclear. many might see this as cause for concern that things won’t change for the better, justifiably imo.
but whether you give him the benefit of the doubt or not, yeah, you shouldn’t make a judgment from this one photo.

Just got done watching the game on DVR
Great comeback win, and wow…as Mike said, we swept someone! It’s actually pretty sad to get swept by a team with only 11 total wins but hey!
Eddie Jordan must be steaming...
The first team he’s back with in coaching, he gets swept by his former team. It’s not like the Wiz are killing the league. Wins against the sixers count for more than 25% of our total wins this season.
I'm just glad they won...
… that AJ and Gilbert played exceptionally well, and Young and Blatche were productive.
I agree with the previous posts that Caron Butler is the odd man out here and hope that a favorable deal can be worked out.
We can only wait and see what the courts of law and Stern have in store for Gilbert, and hope that the man learns from his mistake and is able to make better use of his evident gifts as an athlete in the future.
more stunning moves by gilbert
from the wash post’s game summary article … gilbert probably deserves jail time for stupidity … unreal
And, as his teammates gathered in a circle before the game, Arenas got in the middle, formed his hands into pistols — thumbs up, index fingers out — and acted as if he were shooting his teammates.
“They said, ‘Do it. Do it. Do it,’ " Arenas said of his teammates. “You wonder why I can’t be serious?”
His teammates laughed hysterically. “Gil being Gil,” Nick Young said afterward. “He’s still finding ways to be funny.”
There's already a discussion about this a few comments up
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
And I Don't Think it's That Stupid
If anything, it reveals Gilbert’s goofball nature, and gives credence to those who say that the whole gun incident was nothing more than a prank gone wrong. No malice was involved, which is essential to prove if trying to establish an assault or brandishing charge.

Whether he gets suspended or not....
maybe the Wiz should change the end of a winning game song….keeping it in the Baltimore Club family…… from “Tear the Club Up” to “Pull Ya Guns Out”. I call it a new rallying cry for the team!
