They don't need to void his contract. As long as the NBA suspends Arenas, for say two years, he will collect no salary. There is more than one way to drive him out of the league.
Was wondering if this is correct from a poster on CNNSI. Does the contract come off the books while Gilbert is suspended?

No, it doesn't
He’s right, he won’t be paid while he’s suspended, but it’s still on their cap.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
- While he won’t… whoops, wishful thinking, wouldn’t get paid the owner of the franchise would still be out that money. In most suspension type situations isnt the money re-directed to charitable orgs?? Would this change because of the length/size of the suspension??
- If his money counts towards the cap, I imagine, it would still have luxury tax implications as well. Costing ownership once again.
VOID!!!

Yep
Even if he’s suspended by the League, he still counts against the Cap and the Luxury Tax… Kind of a DOUBLE hit for the Team. (Player not available, but cannot replace him, etc…)

Oops... spoke without researching...
From CBA Faq
If the player is suspended by the league, then 50% of the salary lost due to the suspension counts as team salary.
A suspended player can be traded.
By the way, the money from fines and suspensions is put to good use — it’s given to charities of the NBA’s and Players Association’s choice.

He will be suspended for a long time and he will
count against the cap. Stern also wants to punish the team for not being on top of this.
