Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Marc Stein reports that the Washington Wizards and the Houston Rockets are discussing a trade that would send Tracy McGrady to D.C. for Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood. No deal is imminent, however. A sticking point appears to be Washington's desire to acquire a key player from Houston in addition to McGrady, while the Rockets are only willing to offer the salary relief McGrady's expiring contract would afford Washington.

My two cents

If Washington wants Scola back, then I think that means the Wizards are talking to teams about Jamison as well.

McGrady for Butler would be fine

But to throw in Haywood too, I would think the Wiz definitely need to get something else in return.

Picks and/or a guy like Lowry

Buddinger would be ok if we got a first rounder, too. I’m ok with the trade, though, since we’re not going to get too much more from the other guys (Nuggets, Blazers) who are interested in a deal. If we could then flip AJ to Cleveland for an expirer and a few picks (the farther from now the better, obviously) we’d be on our way to a nice rebuilding project. The Thunder would be a great trading partner, too, although I don’t know what we have (Blatche?) that they’d want other than Javale.

this

is intriguing, though I agree we would seem to be getting fleeced. While Butler is nowhere near the player he was just last year, Haywood is playing better than he ever has. Unfortunately, this could be the best deal we get, and Houston knows it. Every other team knows we’re a sinking ship, and we need to dump our baggage as soon as possible. Not only are we one of the worst teams in the league over the last 2 years, but most of our core players are close to and over 30.

by CJHutch on Jan 31, 2010 9:55 AM EST reply actions

well

its not like we’re going to make noise this year anyways, so i say trade jamison and caron and haywood, void gils contract too, and have a lot of cap space next year, tank and get a high draft pick, sign two good players,

and come back strong next year

Yeah - I can't make the salaries work on the ESPN Trade Machine

without including at least 2 of Chase Budinger, Jermaine Taylor and/or Joey Dorsey…

Remember, both teams have 15 players on the roster, so they have to do a 1 for 1, or a 2 for 2 , or 3 for 3 (etc…) trade…. No lopsided trades will work.

Just to get to McGrady’s enormous salary with Butler and Haywood, you would also have to include either Mike James or Mike Miller in the deal -

This deal works:

Butler + Haywood + Mike James FOR Tracy McGrady + Chase Budinger + Jermaine Taylor

Wizards get at least 1 young prospect (Budinger) and McGrady’s $23 Million expiring
Houston gets an All Star + a 1 year replacement Center until Yao Ming comes back

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

I’d like it better if it were Dorsey rather than Taylor – but I don’t think Houston will give up 2 prospects….

any trade scenario involving the rockets just seems like we are doing them a favor

McGrady expires. Haywood expires. McGrady is out of the league. Haywood is kicking ass.

Caron Butler expires in 2011. Jermaine Taylor/Joey Dorsey are D-League call-ups.

So really, the trade would be Chase Budinger in exchange for the right not to pay Caron Butler next year. Makes no sense.

I agree with Prada, this report just states the obvious, that the Rockets want to get Brendan Haywood.

by John Park Williams on Jan 31, 2010 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

I like Taylor better

He definitely has a ton of potential. When the Wizards drafted him I wasn’t toooooo upset that we passed up DeJuan Blair b/c I was high on Taylor then.

Horrible trade

It gives us very little cap savings. It only saves us 1 year of CB’s salary. I’d rather send Haywood to Portland for Rudy Fernandez. Jamison and maybe NY to Cleveland for JJ Hickson and send Caron somewhere for a young player or draft pick. CB and Haywood are our best trade chips so we should get some sort of player back.

by BayAreaBullet on Jan 31, 2010 12:28 PM EST reply actions

Agree... no effing way...

Rudy or Batum and Blake (expiring) for Haywood is the type of deal we should be making with Portland. Hickson a first rounder and Z (expiring) for AJ. Butler to the Bucks for Delfino, Warrick and a first.

We should only be dealing one player (Butler) for McGrady but the money does not work, so that would imply thar something like the James expiring and Stevenson would need to be thrown in, that gets it close.

by khrabb on Jan 31, 2010 12:59 PM EST up reply actions

yeah only problem being JJ Hickson is really coming along lately

It might be tough to get him and an expiring from Cleveland for just AJ. I guess it depends on how desperate they are to get a ring this year to keep Lebron. I really like Hickson he is going to be a legit back to the basket scorer and a monster rebounder.

another contract I can see the Wizards trading in a Houston deal is Stevenson’s.

Will Houston take Gilbert?

They love guns down there. Keep Haywood.

The Rockets have focused on four teams — Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago and New York — with the Rockets willing to take back a long, heavy contract, but not two, and other teams trying to get one of the Rockets’ young assets. (ESPN mentioned Luis Scola, but Washington and others are actually targeting Aaron Brooks, Carl Landry or Chase Budinger. Scola is a free agent this summer.)

This has been roughly the state of talks for nearly a month, with the sides determined to wait for the other to move off its demands closer to the trade deadline, and the Rockets’ hoping that teams will be more compelled to make a deal than the Rockets are because they have something to gain long-term by doing nothing at all.

I can, however, share something from a friend who is a long-time scout and front office guy. I had come over thinking Andre Iguodala would be a better get than Caron Butler. He strongly disagreed, arguing that neither is a guy that carries a team, but Iguodala has the contract of one. Butler has one more year left on his deal. He said Butler “isn’t a good guy, he’s a great guy.” Most of all, he said Butler is a better fit, giving the Rockets shooting they desperately need and that would work well next season with Yao Ming.

by Johnnie Futbol on Feb 1, 2010 9:19 AM EST reply actions

You are right that the source may be overestimating Butler...

but he is dead on about Iggy, who is seriously overpaid. I saw the Laker-Sixer game on tv here in Warsaw Friday and Iggy was a total non-factor (the treat of the game was a 10-minute stretch of vintage Iverson).

by khrabb on Feb 1, 2010 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

Philly's the wrong place for him

Iggy’s also the type of guy who does things you don’t notice that increase his value. He’s a great defender, great ball-handler and is a blur in transition. You have to pick him up, which leaves others open. His adjusted plus/minus is always near the top of the league.

Butler, meanwhile, scores and does nothing else anymore.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 1, 2010 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

Butler seems to have re-committed himself to the offensive boards the last few games. I believe that is one of his strengths.

by MR on Feb 1, 2010 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

Marginally, I guess

His career offensive rebound percentage is 5.3%. That means that for every 20 offensive rebound opportunities, Butler grabs one. That’s barely enough to make much of an impact.

(He’s also at a career-low 4.1% this year).

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 1, 2010 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

That's why I said he needs a new team

Philly has no other shooters, so his outside shooting weakness becomes way more glaring. Put him with a deadeye shooter at the 2, though, and he becomes so valuable.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Feb 1, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

I'd take Iggy over Butler

Iggy is a better rebounder, passer, and a much better defender.

by BayAreaBullet on Feb 1, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

The Rockets are retarded

If they dont want to give up one other player. Houston is my favorite team behind the wiz, and this is is exactly what they need. Someone that can score and create shots and a starting center that is taller than the other teams starting SF. Plus they wouldnt even have minutes for Battier, Ariza, Buddinger, and Lowry, if they got caron.

by returnofswagger on Feb 2, 2010 3:19 PM EST reply actions

next years starters

ty lawson, leandro barbosa, andre iguodala, amare stoudemire, javale mcgee
hahaha i dont think its really possible but damn that would be strange

by jeffbenson on Feb 3, 2010 2:10 PM EST reply actions

i dont know

i doubt lawson would be possible, some sort of trade involving jamison, butler, or haywood (and others maybe miller or foye or blatche) to the suns for barbosa and stoudemire im not sure how we’d land iguodala but i suppose if the suns trade only involved one of the aforementioned “big 3” we could deal the other(s) for him. Like I said i doubt its possible i just think that’d be a sick lineup. Maybe John Wall in place of lawson at point (if we’re so god damn lucky). alright halftimes probably over!
