Trade Talked about on NBA TV ( J.R. Smith)
On The Beat on NBA TV they were talking about possible Western Conference teams making trades, and the Wizards were mentioned. They were saying that the Nuggets are looking for a center, and that they are trying to get rid of J.R. Smith, so they mentioned maybe something involving Smith for Brenden. I like this trade because i really love Smith's game, but i know we already have enough underachieving, young knuckleheads so it might not be a good idea. I think it might be worth it because since we are going into rebuilding mode, Smith is a very good young player with a lot of potential. Also Haywood being traded would give Javale and Andray more minutes to develop. Just wondering what you guys think, would you want this trade?

JR Smith??
What did the nationals shoot down their Elijah Dukes offers??
http://twitter.com/dcsportsbog/statuses/8284533739
VOID!!!
I think thats a great deal actually
According to hoopshype, Smith’s contract expires in 2011. At this point, adding salary to next year does no damage since were not landing any free agent this off-season anyway.
The only question is whether we can get anything better for Haywood. Dallas, Portland, Houston, hell even Memphis, will all obviously make their offers, but I can’t imagine any of them making a better offer (if they do, they are dumb).
If we trade for Smith, we get to watch him try and lead the league in scoring. Odds are he just develops into Ricky Davis or Cuttino Mobley. But maybe we get lucky and he starts to play like a legit 2-guard.
So, we trade for Smith, watch him joke around next season. If we decide to keep him, we resign him in 2011, if we don’t, we let him go. It might be kind of fun to watch JR Smith jack up twenty shots per game.

And the Nuggets want Haywood
But they’d also want to find a way to get Young in the deal so that they don’t lose too much SG production. I’m sure all of Denver’s bench bigs besides Birdman will probably be traded, but I dunno if yall want them.

"We have a great bunch of outside shooters. Unfortunately, all our games are played indoors." - Weldon Drew
I think it's easy to forget that he's actually a lot better than people give him credit for
He’s started poorly this year, but he was a monster last year. When his head is on right, he can be a good defender, and he’s quick and talented enough that he can be an efficient scorer in spite of a shot selection that makes Gil look like Mike Miller. The Nuggets would probably like to get Nick Young, too, since they’d need bench scoring and more depth if they got rid of him.
I'm concerned about the knucklehead factor
Smith seems like a nice enough guy, but he comes with a ton of baggage, and more than anything, I think this team needs a culture change.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
100%
Can you imagine his locker next to Young and Blatche and McGee?
Besides, what we need are draft picks not band aids.
I like Smith fine and I think a lot of his "baggage" is overblown
He could be a very effective player. I just think he needs watching by a strong, veteran clubhouse, which is not what the Wizards have (and ironically, is what Denver has).
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I just don't think he is very saavy or smart
which is what we need more of in the locker room.
I also think that Denver’s strong vet clubhouse is not that saavy or smart (Billups being the obvious big exception)

Kind of a gamble, but I like it
I think getting Smith from the Nuggets could be like getting either Joe Johnson or Quentin Richardson from the Suns. You don’t know which one you’re getting, but if it’s Richardson then you only have to keep him for a year, and he’s not super expensive. If it’s Johnson, you can resign him and surround him with 2010 and 2011 high draft picks (e.g., Josh Smith and Al Horford). Then you try to add the final pieces through trades and free agency.
Anyone think that maybe...
Him being traded would make him realize he needs to mature? More for the reason that if we’re trading for him, it means we’re staring the rebuilding process, so that means Antawn and Caron would probably also be gone. So he would actually be one of the more experienced “veterans” on the team and maybe he would take up a sorta leadership role for the younger guys to look up to. Of course there’s also just a chance of him goofin off with the younger guys so i dont know. Which do you guys think is more likely?
And just imagine we somehow get John Wall in the draft(right now we have the 3rd best chance)
A backcourt of Wall and Smith would be one of the fastest, most athletic backcourts in the league. It would be especially dangerous with Wall’s driving ability and Smith’s outside shooting. We could turn ourselves into one of the most dangerous fastbreak teams with Wall, Smith, and McGee runnin the break, Also Wall isn’t like the PG’s we have now, he will hit Javale when he is cutting for easy dunks and for plenty of alley-oops. I think even as soon as next year that would be a pretty dangerous team, and if not, it would at least be very fun to watch.
I'm trying not to think about Wall
Something that good would never happen to us. More likely than not, we’ll get someone like Greg Monroe or Evan Turner. For some reason, I think that he’ll be a 76er.

That would be hilarious
Then him and Griffin would collide in practice and blow out their knees.

I'm not sure about him
He’s putting up nice numbers and seems almost Pippen-esque as far as his versatility, but do we really want to draft a junior in our first year of rebuilding? Plus, I think one of our problems has been that we’ve got too many guys who do a lot of things but don’t really excel at anything coughBlatchecough and Turner seems like another one of those types. I like Derrick Favors a bit more, although I don’t know how he’d mesh with McGee. It’d be nice to have two guys in the frontcourt who can block more than two shots a night, though.

evan turner would be more than okay compensation in my book

I'm not entirely sold on him

Here's the link to the ESPN Lottery/Mock draft Machine
http://espn.go.com/nba/lottery2010/mockdraft
and my bad, we’ve gone down to the fourth best chance of getting the 1st pick
Baggage, attitude, knucklehead factor, its all irrelevant I think....
because the Wizards of the past five years are done, and the franchise will be one of the worst for the next two seasons at least, so, regardless of who we trade for, be it JR Smith or Shane Battier, no one is going to care about the Wizards.
The only question is whether we can get more for Haywood. If the Mavs cave and offer Bourbois, then we do it. If the Nuggets cave and offer Ty Lawson, we do it. If the Blazers cave and offer either Rudy Fernandez, Nicolas Batum or Jerryd Bayless, we do it.
But if the best offer is JR Smith, then we definitely do it. At best, he becomes a star, averaging 22 a game, and the Wizards resign him in 2011. At worst, he shoots us to the worst record in the league next year, and we get a Top-3 pick.
We will still have the great arena, the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro, and Phil and Buck. But the Wizards of next year will be painful. We just need to be patient.

At least JR would be fun to watch
And I think we’d be forced to play McGee. I wouldn’t mind letting everyone else go, though, with the possible exception of Foye.

No
At worst his alleged bad habits rub off on the young players we would be trying to develop.
by MR on Jan 28, 2010 1:26 PM EST up reply actions
fair point
but I’d counter that any player capable of being “corrupted” by JR Smith is weak-minded to begin with, and does not have the mental makeup of someone we can build around,
The 2006-2007 Boston Celtics tanked to get Oden/Durant. With Paul Pierce out with an injury, the locker room was run by youngsters; Rajon Rondo, Delonte West, Ryan Gomes, Al Jefferson, Kendrick Perkins, Gerald Green & Sebastian Telefair.
Rondo, West, Gomes, Jefferson and Perkins have all developed into team-first, legit contributors, who I would gladly take on the Wizards.
Green and Telefair are selfish ball-hogs who suck, who I would never want on the Wizards.
My point is, if JR Smith rubs off on the young players giving them bad habits, we probably shouldn’t bother trying to develop them in the first place.

I don't think you are making the point you intend to make
if you use Rondo (doesn’t the whole locker room hate him?), West (motorcycle gun crazy man), and Jefferson (black hole) as your examples.
Would you really gladly have them on the Wizards?
The point is it’s better to have smart players that play smart basketball and have good habits on your team, especially if you are developing young players and especially if you don’t care what your record is while you’re doing it.
I would rather have the example of Shane Battier around than JR Smith.
by MR on Jan 28, 2010 3:20 PM EST up reply actions
if the whole locker room hates Rondo, they sure don't show it on the court
and he was just named an all-star, in addition to being the starting point guard on championship team.
I have never read anything negative about Delonte West as it relates to basketball. He would run through a wall for the Cavaliers. I would always want a guy like that on my team. Not to mention that he destroyed Gilbert in Arenas’ last meaningful game as a Wizard (Game 4 of the 2008 playoffs).
Al Jefferson is obviously not Tim Duncan, but yes, I would gladly take him on our team.

Insanely awful deal
Late to this. How could anyone think that Haywood for JR Smith is a good deal? Haywood is a premier defender in the league, the only consistently good player on this team, and the only one who plays quality defense. JR Smith? Yeah, that’s just what we need.. another guard with issues.
