Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

I'm guessing a suspension announcement is coming soon.

UPDATE: Ken Berger quotes a league source saying the suspension is going to be "steep."

in a weird way

i believe that the best thing for gil would be to get suspended for the rest of the year.

in march he will likely get a jail sentence. if he is active in the league, then the wizards can likely use his going to jail as a reason to void (ie. he cant perform on his contract as he is in jail).

if he is still suspended by the league while in jail, he is better off from his overall contract standpoint.

I'm thinking

season suspension too. Court date isn’t till end of March? No reason for Stern to allow him to play till the legal matter is resolved so by that time, might as well be the rest of the year.

I read somewhere this season and also next season-

I’m trying to figure out where I saw it to post a link. Just tired right now

would a suspension for all of next season help with the voiding of contract?

i have to believe the team could claim so kind of breach of contract or something if they don’t have his services for something he alone did.

The players union will fight for sure-

I don’t really know about being able to void the contract. We’ll have to wait and see I guess. I would think they would have to try if he is out for so long. Sets the team back for years.

Does anyone know the luxury tax implications

of the potential penalties? If Arenas and Crittendon both are suspended for the rest of the season, will that permit the Wizards to end up under the luxury tax threshold? Will it get the Wizards close enough that trading somone with a small contract with no player returning to the Wizards can get the Wizards under the luxury tax threshold?
Thanks.

Right, thank you

I was wondering, though, whether anyone had already done the math to determine whether rest of the season suspensions bring the Wizards under the tax threshold.

by disgrunted on Jan 27, 2010 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

They save

somewhere in the neighborhood of $5m on Gil’s contract. Critt makes about $1.48m so they’d save about $400k assuming he gets suspended today for the rest of the season.

So that’s $5.5m out of $8m. They’d still have to shed another $2.5m to get under the luxtax.

But if I'm not mistaken

The way this works is that the Wizards have to pay that money to charity instead and it stays on their cap.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

The Wizards pay the entire salary – it goes to charity..

Half the salary stays on the books and is included in the Salary Cap (and Luxury Tax) calculations.

From Salary Cap Faq:

Players are not paid while they are suspended. If a player is suspended by his team, then all of his salary counts as team salary. If the player is suspended by the league, then 50% of the salary lost due to the suspension counts as team salary.

any chance Stern

just suspends to whole team? I mean, if Arenas’ actions are an “embarrassment to the league”, isn’t the teams’ play as well?

Seriously though, I’m sure he will get the rest of this season. Which means he will be 29 and not have played for the better part of 3 seasons by the time he comes back. How does THAT trade value look?

Sounds bad

I bet it includes at least a part of next year:

Source: Stern/Arenas met for about an hour. Commish has all info he needs to render decision. “It’s going to be steep,” source says.

like i said above - i believe this is best wrt gils remaining contract

and will make it harder to void…i read this a few places…as wizards cant claim he was in jail and couldnt perform on his contract
