Flip Saunders: Last play was supposed to be for Randy Foye
No wonder Foye was so brief after the game.

Yes, bad for team chemistry
Caron Butler has KILLED team chemistry for the last 2 years. He’s real quick to blame the “young guys” and complain when he’s not an all-star. His 20 shots to 1 assist ratio last night was pathetic and it’s obvious that his 1-on-5 offense is killing the offensive flow.
As has been noted elsewhere, the “youngins” see Butler get away with whatever he wants and they get yelled at or benched for one mistake.
Different standards of accountability will hurt the chemistry on any team and in any workplace.
How would I do that?
For starters, the differing standard of accountability was very explicit last season with Tapscott making it clear that veterans were entitled to shots/minutes, but I expected Flip to get rid of that.
Just like Blatche should have played the rest of the 4th Q rather than Jamison, Flip subbed Jamison in by default. That’s an opinion that you could argue either way though….
But I don’t see how you can argue that Caron’s play has been some of the most selfish I’ve ever seen by a basketball player in the NBA (yes, that bad) and that he seems beyond accountability. Butler is currently 129th in the NBA in assists/48. Flip went very soft on him in comments today, meaning either he’s being soft on him or they are trying to pump up his trade value.
I’d bet dollars-to-donuts that Ernie has wanted to trade Butler since about week 2 of this season.

Well you are repeating some of the mantra that float around this echo chamber. Frequently things get posted here that have no basis in fact that are then taken as truth and sited by another poster.
You claim that Butler is "real quick to blame the "young guys". I’m just asking for a quote from Butler. There may be one, I just don’t recall it.
You also state "youngins" see Butler get away with whatever he wants and they get yelled at or benched for one mistake". I’d like to see where that was the case. A single quote will do.
I think that people get benched for their own reasons. Maybe a player makes the same mistake over and over. Everyone looks at McGee’s minutes and thinks conspiracy, but ignore the fact that if Oberto has a bad game he gets benched too. People claim there was an anti-youth bias last year, yet McGuire started the majority of the season. How can there be an anti-youth bias against Young if the guy drafted the same year is taking his starting spot?
Caron quit long ago
Caron quit last season. You could see it in his eyes. I think he thought earlier this season that he could just turn it back on but for whatever reason (either because it’s not that easy to do or Gil being the lead dog pissed him off or something) he didn’t. And then he just decided to quit again.
Tough Juice was always going to play better for a coach like Eddie Jordan because Eddie was more of a mind manipulator. He knew how to play the Caron fiddle and it made him our most overrated player. All Star….ha.
True Hoop on www.espn.com picked up on this too...
As I said earlier, Caron is busily writing his ticket out of DC…
But the Wizards (see Hollinger’s Thursday chat also on espn.com) are apparently holding up this year’s trade parade by asking too much in return from potential trading patners… To which I say fine! Don’t sell cheap, baby… get all the first round draft choices and relatiely young role players you can.
Yeah don't sell cheap...
I actually expect EG to make some shrewd moves, and I’d be surprised if there wasn’t at least one fleece- type deal where we get a lot more than we give up.

Here's why the Wizards suck...and it has nothing to do with Arenas
Caron Butler is ranked 292nd in assist to turnover ratio.
Jamison is 293rd.
At least in Jamison's defense, he doesn't turn it over
I don’t mind AJ’s shooting because he scores pretty efficiently and never turns it over or stops the ball. Caron holds onto it for five seconds, pump fakes three times, then takes bad shots. AJ can be a part of a good team, but there isn’t a single contender in the league with a player like Caron.

Our two " stars "
need people to create for them but they dont return the favor. Thanks for the insight.
There's actually nothing wrong with needing people to create for you
It actually helps the flow of the offense. What hurts teams is what Caron is doing, killing shot clock time, stopping the flow of the offense, and not even getting efficient buckets. I’d actually rather have a bunch of guys who can score off of cuts off the ball and jumpers after the ball has been swung around than have a bunch of guys who are going to go one on one all the time.

Basketball is a game of passing
not shooting. NBA players drain shots for fun in practice but of course thats without a defender doing everything possible to disrupt your rhythm. You get open by passing and moving. Not by waiting around for your team mates to create a shot for you. Having one Blackhole shot jacker is fine ( Jamison ) but now with Caron also hogging the ball its made our team far to easy to defend. Defenders only have to play for the shot and the off ball defenders can sag toward the key either to help on the drive or grab the errant shot.
but they dont return the favor
That’s the problem I have with our " star " players. The offense stops as soon as the ball gets to them.
I don't agree with your characterization of Jamison
He moves so well without the ball and makes quick moves. Maybe he’s not a great passer, but he’s not a ball-stopper either.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
That post was more so
aimed at Caron.
Having one Blackhole shot jacker is fine ( Jamison )
Caron is averaging a career low in assist since he has joined the Wizards.
Well yeah, Caron's been bad
I agree there.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Im not a Butler fan these days...
… but he really had the hot hand last night. He was driving past Marion like he was standing still all day. I can totally understand why he wanted to go at Marion for the last shot.
Butler was 7-20 from the field
That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t have taken the last shot, but I wouldn’t necessarily say he had the hot hand.
Yeah, thanks for posting that
19 points on 20 shots is remarkably inefficient, and that’s even with Caron getting to the line several times.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Foye would have won the game or Miller. We suck lol

Foye?
I’m not trying to knock the guy, but wasn’t everyone complaining about his end of game shots against the Bulls just last week?
He tries to be the hero and takes off-balance ones from 20 feet
but he’s good if a play is run for him and he’s taking a shot within the flow of the offense, rather than thinking he’s Kobe in 2006. I’d rather see him miss a shot off of a screen or a pick than see the guy with the hot hand go one on one against a guy who was or at least should have been all-defense like three years ago.

What is Flip claiming, here?
Saunders basically sent Caron Butler to the lions, here. Remind me again about his reasons for going to the press?
“I had a lot of coaches calling and they said, ‘Now was that the play? You wanted to match up Caron against Shawn Marion, maybe the best five second defender in the league? I said, ’Not necessarily.’”
Ah yes. Coaches were calling him. Speaking of bad chemistry, when your coach disses his players by saying ‘So many coaches were calling me that I had to get this out in the papers,’ that’s a fairly weird sign.

Agreed
Very weird. And that’s not to say that Butler isn’t a selfish player. But I don’t think what he did last night was the worst thing ever.
Particularly after Brendan Haywood said he wouldn't name names,
This looks low from Flip. He’s feeling the pressure, for sure.
Saunders arguably has lost his two previous teams in the locker room. This one’s not his fault, but he’s not putting out any particular fires. Even before things were breaking apart, he was doing stuff like dissing Nick Young….

Going to my first ever game tonight
My gf got me some tickets. Anyone recommend a good restaurant near the phone booth???
shine like bald head, smoke trees call me log head
There’s a Legal Seafood there, a Clyde’s, a Ruby Tuesday’s, and a Hooters (all on 7th street). I haven’t been to any other sit down restaurants in that immediate area, but when I take the kids, they always wanna go to fuddruckers. There are also a couple nice bars where you can oil up and get an appetizer (or entree)… Can’t think of the names, but they’re on 7th street also.
I usually go to Ruby Tuesday's or the ESPN Zone next to Metro Center
It’s technically an entire metro stop away, but the ESPN Zone is maybe a five minute walk from Verizon Center. Clyde’s is ok, too.

Shaking my head at pantslessyoda's taste in cuisine
But then again, maybe those first two places are the only ones that will seat someone who is pantsless.
RubyT
has the 5 dollar mixed drink with the not cheap liquor. For someone used to paying 7-8 dollars somewhere else that’s great. For me that is where Amazing happens.
District Chophouse, hands down!
& if the Wizzies score 100+ (even in defeat) you get a free beer from their admirable selection of microbrews…
7th between E&F.
Ruby Tuesday really?
I was looking for some local intel.
My gf got me some nice tickets. I gotta return the favor with a decent restaurant. She might punch me in the face if I told her I was taking her to Ruby Tuesday.

Finally a topic I know about
If you want fairly fast Tex-Mex and want to be confident you’ll get a seat: Austin Grill on E St, between 7th and 8th.
Mini burgers, excellent pizza, good “scene”, Matchbox on H St between 7th and 8th. Get there early, you will have a 20 minute wait at least.
Next door to Matchbox is Asian Spice. Nice little uncrowded restaurant with a variety of Asian cuisines, mostly Thai, but some Japanese and Chinese also.
Rasika on D Street between 6th and 7th Street. Indian food. Often crowded, but they can seat you in the bar area usually.
Seafood – Legal Seafood on 7th street directly across the street, pretty good, pricey and you’ll want a reservation. Also mccormick and schmick which is at 10th and G (I think).
Clydes next door to the Verizon Center is good. Its a local chain, but I like it. May need a reservation to get seated.
Rosa Mexicana at 7th and F, directly across the street. Not bad Mexican food. Pleasant ambience.
RFD is on 7th Street up past 8th Street. Its southern food and I wasn’t that impressed, but has a wide variety of beer selection.
Zatinya – 9th and G (I think), Mediterean small plates. My buddy says they have a special that if you sit at the bar, you can get a $4 beer and $4 small plate items. Says 3 “small plates” makes a good meal.
Ellas Woodfire Pizza makes good pizza in a pleasant atmosphere. Try to get there before 5:45 to get seated immediately.
District Chophouse on 7th St between E and F. May want to make a reservation there.
Zola Restaurant on F St between 7th and 8th is good and is a “nice” place.
If you like sushi, I’ve heard good things about Sei restaurant which is on 7th between D and E.
Hope this helps.
