Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Once again, the national media takes a deuce on the Wizards. ESPN says they'll make the playoffs. Yeah, bold prediction. They have the Wiz at #15!

Eh, I can sort of understand it

We know we’ve got talent, but it’s true that we only won 19 games last year. If Gilbert hurts himself again, we’re probably going to go back to being a 40 win team.

Yeah

And if Lebron gets hurt, Cleveland is a lottery team.

You should not make predictions based on injuries… but rather on facts.

They certainly didn’t knock Boston too far down because of KG’s knees…
The Spurs are 5th, even though Manu Ginobli has a bum ankle.
The Suns are 10th, even though Stoudemire had eye surgery?

Without Gilbert Arenas, this is a 40-41 win team… With Gilbert, Mike Miller and Randy Foye – that’s gotta improve the record by 7-10 games.

These Wizards are better than the Hawks. They’re better than the Jazz, the Bulls or the Raptors.

I’d say they’re closer to 8th or 9th….

15th is a joke.

Who cares?

Everyone has to work hard to figure out where to place the Wizards, since they’ve changed so much since last year. This guy might have said “Well, the last season the Wizards were healthy a majority of the time, (06-07), they were a .500 team and the seventh seed in a weak East.” He accounted for second-half injuries that year, bumped us up a little bit; then accounted for the big three getting older, bumping us down a littler bit; then he accounted for the additions, bumped us up; finally, he noted that although Arenas and Haywood have been promising this offseason, there is still no hard evidence saying that either one is ready to perform at their pre-injury levels, bumping us back down to where he put us. Do I love it when we’re in the top 10 of power rankings? Hell yes. Do I think I have any reason to get mad that someone else only puts us in the top half? Hell no. We should know — the team damn sure better know — that the Wizards have a lot to prove after last season. We were the worst team in the East last year — we absolutely will not get the benefit of the doubt.
