Shelden Williams signs w/ BOS for vets minimum
The Boston Globe is reporting that Shelden Williams signed a one-year deal at the veterans minimum.
Say what?
I'm not against the Oberto signing, but I'd would much rather have had Shelden Williams at the minimum....argh.

Great signing for Boston
I actually think that, at this point in their careers, Shelden Williams could very well wind up being more valuable to them than Sheed, at least for the price. Shelden sucks at pretty much everything, but he can rebound and defend, and a team with Pierce, Allen, KG and Rondo really only needs their supporting cast to do that.

Quick scan of Williams career
• Once was traded for Calvin Booth (and McCants)
• Plays PF, not C
• Had a hard time cracking the rotation in both Sacto and Minnesota, not exactly powerhouses
• Went to Duke
Still want him?

For a million bucks a year...Heck Yeah I do!
A former #5 pick that is 25 years old and has shown that he’s a solid rebounder at the NBA level.
For a million bucks a year we’d get a tough nosed rebounder who should still be improving. He gives us 6 strong fouls in the paint and can body up against opposing bigs. He’d give us emergency minutes at the 4 and 5 position, which is exactly what we wanted for our 14th guy.
This is exactly the type of signing that Stevenson was for us a couple of years ago….
What’s not to like at a million dollars? I don’t get it.

Sure, throw him on the pile
For just a million? Well, two actually.
It’s not our money. If it’s just play money then what do I care?
But at the cost of Oberto, which was the original post? No thanks.
(ps Who cares about his draft position?)

?
Oberto costs us twice what Williams would have cost us and Oberto is 10 years older. And I care about his draft position as much as I care who he was once traded for, and that he went to Duke!
I don’t want to go around quoting John Hollinger, but only once did Oberto post a higher PER than Shelden, although admittedly the sample size for Williams is smaller.
Again, I’m not here complaining about the Oberto signing. I think Oberto will help us. I’m saying the grand scheme of things I’d rather have had Dejaun Blair at the rookie salary, or Shelden Williams for half the cost of Oberto. Even both of them would have cost us the same, or less than Oberto.
Oh well.

All roads lead back to Blair
I’d rather have Oberto
by MR on Aug 4, 2009 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Give it up
Williams and Blair = two guys who havent proven they can play in this league, Williams = a guy who HAS proven he CAN’T play in this league.
Oberto = a Starting center for a championship squad
which means Oberto > Williams and Blair
Simple math

Uh, no, it's not that simple
Oberto was a starter two years ago playing next to Tim Duncan. Williams can rebound okay and Blair was the best rebounder in college basketball this decade.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

No
There are plenty of people that can rebound “okay” so im not sure what the point was with that and Blair was the best rebounder in COLLEGE basketball this decade. Blair was playing against COLLEGE players not NBA players. You cannot argue with the fact that Williams has done next to nothing in this league and that Blair has done nothing in this league yet and that it is unknown what he will do in the NBA. Oberto has been in the league and we already know what to expect from him.

I didn't say SkinsWizStangs was wrong
Just that it’s not nearly as simple as he makes it sound.

I'll still hitch my wagon to the Spurs Management horse, anytime...
The Spurs Management continually makes the right draft moves… they always make simple, but very effective trades. They release the right guys. They keep the right guys. They pay salaries commensurate with production, and they utilize their D-League affiliate better than any other team in the League. The San Antonio Spurs are just an elite organization.
This off-season?
They shipped Bruce Bowen, Fabricio Oberto and Kurt Thomas (three players with expiring contracts) to the Milwaukee Bucks for Richard Jefferson They signed Theo Ratliff and Antonio McDyess. And they stole DeJuan Blair in the 2nd round of the draft… Yes, I said they stole him… a stright up theft from the other 29 teams in the League.
And they obviously saw something in Blair (like the fact that, despite being listed at only 6’7", he can rebound) and signed him to a very inexpensive contract… College, D-League, Europe – it doesn’t matter. If a guy rebounds there, he can rebound in the NBA….
And gee, guess what, if his knees don’t hold up, it’s not like they have $111 Million dollars tied up in him….
Oberto has been in the league and we already know what to expect from him.
I don’t think it’s as cut-and-dried as you think. Don’t get me wrong… I like the fact that the Wizards signed Fab Oberto… but what happens if Oberto is not as “Fab” as he used to be? He is, after all, and “old” 34… Meaning he has a lot of mileage on those legs. He’s played almost every season and every off-season for his home country team, Argentina. (World Championship Tournaments. Tournament of the Americas. Olympics. World U22 Championships. South American Championships). He’s been playing Professional Basketball for 17 years. And he’s coming off an off-season where he underwent a procedure to fix a heart problem. Like I said, I don’t think anyone can cavalierly say they know what to expect from Oberto.

The Spurs are certainly a good organization, but here are their draft picks of late. Not sure I see a ton of quality there. Barbosa is the obvious standout, traded on draft night to the Suns. Udrih has blossomed mostly since going to the Kings. Anyone I’m missing? I don’t know that the Spurs are the last word in draft picks.

Let’s just not scream every time someone signs an end of the bench big man for LLE or less.
by MR on Aug 6, 2009 1:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
but is it important
to have that ruffin/popeye jones type guy to do a little dirty work if needed
i suspect no, not really, but ugly guys at the end of the bench can be funny

you may be right on sheldon and a lot of others being better players for the same amount of money. but we needed a back up center capable of holding down the position should BH quit for radio, errr, gets injured. AB and McGhee might be ready.
