Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

The title is a 'Google' translation of a recent interview Fabricio Oberto had with Olé.

You can head to Google Translate and paste the URL of the article, or just read on if you speak Spanish.

One interesting tidbit from the translated version: When asked about Flip Saunders (and how he calls/texts with his players), Oberto said, "Yes, we speak often. They make me feel important."

H/T: 48 Minutes of Hell

Also: The "official" Oberto press conference will be help at 1 pm today. WashingtonIWizards.com will have a link.

I like

that he wants to win, and will do whatever he can to help the team. Hopefully he pays tribute to Tim Duncan more than just a number and pulls off some of the moves he was taught.

Close but...

… no cigar.

Actually Oberto was saying “THEY (the Wizards) want ME (Oberto) to make them more intelligent on the court.”

Otherwise the translation is pretty much right on.

Translation of most the Ole Article

Here are a few interesting parts of the article. Translation is in brackets below the original Spanish/Castellano. I also summarized a few paragraphs about his sightseeing and his physical with the team.

[Article describes Oberto visiting the National Gallery and the Legg Mason semis and final where fellow Argentine Del Potro won].

[All kinds of things happen in this city. I think I’m going to really enjoy it. Even outside my life in the NBA, I like to know places, I’m interested in cluture, art… they’re life experiences."]

[Article discusses how Oberto passed his physical, which included a stress test, and how Wizards medical team spoke with the surgeon who operated on his heart earlier this year.]

[Oberto took advantage of being here for the physical to get to know the franchise and he came away with the same impression he had been presented before. “It’s very serious.” He ran into one of the forwards on the team (Brendan Haywood) and spoke with coach Flip Saunders.]

-¿Qué te explicó? [What did he {Coach Saunders} explain?]

[He explained the project/strategy and their interest in me. He explained that I am a different player than those they already have and that they want me to make the team more intelligent on the court."]

-¡Qué presión te metió! [He put you under a lot of pressure!]

[I’ll have to see how it goes on the court… But those are the things that made me decide on Washington.]

[You were surprised by how many times Coach Saunders called you in Cordoba {Argentina}, right?]

-Sí, hablamos seguido. Me hacen sentir importante. [Yeah, we spoke all the time. They make me feel important. I hope to be able to add something so we do well. I’d like to be in the playoffs.]

[Did he speak about your role, about whether you’ll play center or power forward?]

[He knows I play both positions and I told him I will adapt. The role can wait, it will come with time. I can’t be assured of anything and I also don’t have illusions of playing 30 minutes. The most important thing is helping the team however I can.]

[The Wizards have Antawn Jamison as their starting power forward and Haywood as the starting center. It appears that Oberto will play more at the four. However, there are also the forwards JaVale McGee and Andray Blatche.]

[Number 7 is taken. What number are you going to use and why?]

[I chose number 21, because it’s my birthday (in March) and also in honor of Tim Duncan. He was the player I followed most before being in the NBA and later having the opportunity to have him as a teammate, I appreciate him even more.]

Glad to.

Although I’m a DC native, I used to live in Argentina and all my friends down there are big basketball fans. Keep up the good work here and on your blog. I enjoy both sites.
