Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Did you know that Channing Frye once scored a career high 30 points (one of three such 30 pt. occasions), in a win against the Wizards when he was with the Knicks? And that this happened to occur on Gilbert Arenas' birthday?

I was at that game

The Wiz really laid a big egg. Frye played great. He was very highly regarded as a rookie and seemed to be on a good path. Not sure why he’s faded since.

With the return of Greg Oden

and the fact that Joel Przybilla plays pretty solid defense at back-up Center…. that left Channing Frye to battle it out with LaMarcus Aldridge for minutes at the PF. And although both Aldridge and Frye are pretty soft on Defense, Aldridge is a much better Offensive player – and is really steady…. so Aldridge played 37 minutes per game last year.

My guess is that Channing Frye would be better off somewhere he can get minutes. There’s just too many good young bigs in Portland for him to get any playing time.

He seems like a player that could learn a lot from AJ. Similar in some ways, although I haven’t seen Frye in a long time.

Collins

while clearly just a big body, is exactly what we need. We’re chock full of versatile front court guys. We need another solid, thick, single position CENTER. Rasho isn’t going to take the vet minimum right now. None of them will but at least they know Ernie is interested.

I agree that Rasho doesn't get the vets minimum

I actually could see Orlando scooping him up for half the MLE to play behind Dwight Howard. I think that we may have to go up to 2 years/6 million to get Rasho.

And I’d prefer to do that than Jason Collins for the vets minimum.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Or especially Jamaal Magloire

He essentially wasted whatever talent he had.

The League will be better off with both of those guys (Collins and Magloire) out of the league…

Rasho is the best fit, but ...

I really think Channing Frye would be an absolute steal at the veteran’s minimum. He has alot of talent and even though he doesn’t fill a real need (a backup center/rebounding-defense guy) I think he will be great insurance in case of injury or in case Blatche continues to be unreliable. I wouldn’t be unhappy if we signed him at the minimum if Rasho ends up being too expensive.

Please either sign Frye.....

……or a guy I seldom see mentioned here, Leon Powe. Powe could be a steal, even tho he popped his ACL for like the 3rd time early in the playoffs. I really like his game, and he is an NBA player NOW, we just might have to wait for him to be healthy. It seems like Frye is a great locker room guy, and we have seen what he can do offensively, but I wonder how he will handle being stuck on the bench for a second straight year, suffering from lacca-D syndrome?

Powe

how much do you give a guy who won’t be ready to play until January? Do you get a second year option? If he doesn’t play you will have paid double for absolutely nothing.

That's the good part

Sign Powe for the vet min. for 1 year. I think he will have to sign a deal like that to prove he’s healthy. If he is able to play by January, then we have a 4 with exp. ready for the playoffs, If not he rides the pine like Frye always seems to do by January.
