Washington favorites for Marbury?
I'm still trying to figure out why this would make sense for the Wizards.

Makes no sense. And not because it’s Marbury. Because it’s a 4th PG. I hope it’s just conjecture based on Flip’s history with Marbury. Marbury’s an interesting dude and does a lot for the community of whatever city’s he’s in, and if he gets traded to the team, I will like him; but I don’t see how it helps when you are spending front court money on a backcourt player.

Maybe This Means
There will be a trade that sends away at least one, and maybe two, point guards. I have a pretty strong feeling that Mike James is going to go. So that leaves either Critt or Foye. Marbury might make sense as an emergency PG if Ernie does something similar to the trade I proposed. Otherwise, it makes no sense whatsoever.

This Will not happen
The national media is always wrong about what the Wizards will do. They hardly mention us and now they throw this out there because it “sounds good to them” . I don’t put any stock into this at all. At least I hope they don’t do this. unless there is some trade in the works.

This is a question that should be posed on your original post but Diop on the hook for three more years, is that worth the trade? I like the idea of Bell as an on the ball defensive specialist on the three point line and I like the idea of trading away Stevenson’s salary but I’m not sold on Diop’s salary. And this may be my east coast bias, I’ve hardly seen the guy play – maybe he’s a steal at the price. And there’s my curiosity about Foye, I’d like to see what he can do in a WizBu uniform.
Well the more I think about it in my response, the more I can see it makes some sense. My arguments against the trade are based on what I don’t know about the players.

The Deal With Diop
Is that he makes market value for what he is worth, IMO. In this league, you either get lucky with a big that you drafted or traded for when they were very young, or you pay a high price to acquire them when they’ve proven themselves. Diop was never one of the upper tier starting centers in this league, but he’s a proven commodity, and as a backup, he’s about as good as you can get without overpaying. We can’t afford anyone better, and almost everyone that makes less than he does is either very old, unproven, or worse. He’s only 28 now, so he’ll only be 32 when his contract expires, which is younger than Jamison is now. So I figure that it is worth $6-$7 million per season to lock in a sure thing backup center for the next 4 seasons, especially because we haven’t really had one of his caliber in many, many years.
Based on what I’ve been reading lately, however, I get the feeling that Ernie would rather gamble that McGee takes enormous strides this season rather than go out and get a guy like Diop. But if we did get Diop, we wouldn’t have to worry about what will happen the 20 minutes per game Haywood sits on the bench.

Why would Marbury turn down the vet. minimum offer from Boston to play for Washington? Unless we’re offering him more money. Which in that case Ernie is making a terrible decision.

Because Marbuy is a really odd guy and maybe he’s looking to get back to the coach that helped him elevate his game in the NBA. I think with Marbury, you have to throw reason out the window.

As they stated above
If there is any truth to this Ernie must have a trade already set up that would set our roster up for it to actually make sense for Marbury to sign.
Ernie has given different hints as to what he is going to do with the roster. He said he wants to add a 6-10 minute backup big man. In another interview, when talking about the rotations for each position he did not mention Mike James or Stevenson’s names at all. Now the Marbury rumors are surfacing again.
So, from what I gather these are the potential scenarios:
-The Marbury rumors are not true. Ernie still plans on signing a free agent big man later in the off-season. Stevenson and James will be on the roster but wont play much.
-The Marbury rumors are not true. Ernie plans on aquiring his backup big man through a trade involving Stevenson and/or James. No plans on signing another PG with Crittenton and Foye there.
-The Marbury rumors are true. Ernie plans on making a trade that would ship out Stevenson/James/another guard for a big man that would leave a spot open for Marbury in the PG rotation
-The Marbury rumors are true. Ernie plans on signing Marbury and also signing another big man to supposedly add even more depth. Stevenson and James wont play much or at all.
Now obviously the last scenario make the least sense because it would just be foolish to carry that many guards on the team. So if the Marbury rumors are true then the 3rd scenario makes the most sense. If the Marbury rumors are not true I’d hope the 2nd scenario is most likely since Stevenson and James would be dead weight and could be used for a big man instead of just adding one.

just saw this
I jumped on Nate for bringing it up on the other post. Sorry. I was hoping you were smoking something. Other than the Flip connection, I see no way this helps us. Marbury is getting old, showed his rust in the playoffs, and is way too single-minded. While I think the Knicks handled him poorly, he was not without blame in that fiasco. The one thing we have on this team is character. Other than Arenas’ quirkiness and the immaturity of the young’uns, we have no issues. We don’t need any threat of a cancer. Who’s next, Sprewell?

No worries.
I was doing rails in the parking lot before the post, but I did read it on RealGm. I can understand your kneejerk reaction of wanting to fight because it makes so little sense (as the roster stands now).

BTW, you’re response was the same I had until I thought about Cuppettcj’s response to the acquisition. It can make sense if the team is looking to move some backcourt guys. Is it the answer we are looking for? Probably not. But maybe it could work.

I'd rather
have Iverson to tell you the truth. Same headache, but AI is a much better scorer. Better competitor too. However, if it’s a PG we’re looking for, I think there are plenty of other options that wouldn’t hurt team chemistry. Andre Miller could be available. Or Bibby.
by CJHutch on Jul 4, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If I had to choose between Iverson and Marbury I’d have to go with Marbury. Iverson is a Hall of Fame player but Marbury is the guy that will come off the bench and not complain and not demand a shot count.
I say this a guy that’s got a tenuous connection. I had friends that played with Iverson in pickup games in Hampton so I tend to root for AI because he’s hometown for me – but he ruins the makeup of that team in the backcourt.

AI, Bibby, Miller?
You do realize that Starbury can be had for the vet minimum, or very close to it, right? Those other guys are way out of Abe’s price range.

I dont think he'll go as cheap as the minimum
According to reports he turned down a 1.3 mil offer from the celtics so im guess its gonna take the low level exception

I stand by
what I said. I’d prefer AI. I think they’re both cancerous. Maybe Marbury’s ego is a little more bruised so he would be quicker to come off the bench, but a few months without a job for Iverson may do the same for him. But I hope this is just a useless conversation. I don’t think we benefit with either player. I have no interest in talking about guards, as we have 29 of them.

EG can not be that insane..the guy is a curse to every team he plays for
and he is not a “point guard” in the true sense of the position. His best days are gone, skill wise..this better not happen, trade or no trade, the guy destroys teams he plays on, this better not happen! Sign Alade Aminu and Josh Heytvelt, and be done with it. Stop jerking everyone chain EG we know Wizards are not going to spend another dime and you can’t give away James.

Probably hot air, but I wouldn't say 'no' given....
Mike James is traded — I would not exactly be confident with Crittenton as the #1 backup PG.
It’s still highly questionable if Foye can be a serviceable PG.
With a full training camp and season with a team, I wouldn’t be quick to discount the contributions Marbury can make IF he’s ready to adhere to a team concept under Flip.
And yea, that’s a big ‘if’

I'm softening on this if a trade occurs
Marbury is a solid player and could (COULD – a big “if”) be insurance if Arenas goes down for any extended period of time. And I would say to take the media bias out of your opinion. ESPN hasn’t really talked about the fact that this guy is one of the better humanitarians in basketball. Does this help the team? No. But there is more than what can be heard on Sportcenter or Mike and Mike. Marbury could be a bargain at his cost, he’s trying to reshape his image and his stint in NY makes me think he’s willing to whatever, as long as he respects the coach – which he does with Saunders.
Caveat: Can only work with a trade.

The time to have brought in Marbury was...
in the middle of last season when we settled for James….
I am willing to forgive the fact that he did not look terribly good in the playoffs with Boston last year, and I do think he can help someone this year… but I just don’t see it for the Wizards at this point.

Minneapolis Star Tribune...
…has this:
There is a good chance that Stephen Marbury, who got his NBA start with the Wolves and Flip Saunders, will sign with the Wizards, who will be coached by Saunders this year.
Great. More guards is all we need. And ones that can’t shoot anymore.

But Mike Jones (who?)...
…has this:
One player the Wizards are not even considering, however, is Stephon Marbury. Despite reports that Washington is a favorite to land the guard, who wants a reunion with Flip Saunders, I’m told the interest is only one-sided, and Washington isn’t considering adding any more guards to what is an already crowded back court.
I trust Mike Jones over the MinnStarTrib. And thank God. And this article also narrows down to 4 vet big men who could be come Wizards.
