Today's trade idea: Mike Miller to New Orleans for James Posey and Julian Wright
New Orleans gets another offensive option who can take some pressure off of Chris Paul to create all of New Orleans' scoring opportunities. Plus, they trade two contracts that are on their books past 2010 for one that comes off next season.
Washington gets a couple more defensive aces, which will come in handy since we don't have many of them at the moment. Admittedly, this probably isn't the greatest trade idea I've ever had, but I wanted to see what you all thought.

I like it from a basketball sense
Obviously, Posey is a great role player. I don’t think it’s feasible for us to trade away James, though, since we’ll probably want to re-sign Haywood next year and Caron and Nick Young the year after, and we’d probably look pretty stupid in retrospect to have given up the 5th pick for a year of Foye and Miller if we don’t re-sign one of them (I’d prefer Foye). Still, Posey is very gettable right now, and I’d like to see us pursue him, maybe by trading away Miller for Posey + an expirer, then trying to re-sign Haywood for about what he makes now and picking up our option on Foye.
Disregard everything I said
I thought I saw Mike James. So embarrassing…

I like it
Gilbert, NY, Foye, and Posey can make up for Millers shooting and I really like Julian Wright. He is a much better McGuire. Posey might not have much left but getting Wright and his bird rights would be great. He could be a cheap replacement for Caron if need be down the road.
Hate It
Mike Miller is going to be great for us this year if Gilbert is at 100%. He could have a career year playing alongside Gilbert. Just think of all the open looks he is going to get when guys will be doubling up on Gilbert, Caron, or AJ. If everything works out health-wise, we are going to be absolutely sick offensively.
Dislike
Posey is 3 years at $6M per. Yuck. He’s still a good defender and decent 3 point shooter, but I wouldn’t want him for more than a one year rental, which is impossible given his contract. Julian Wright is intriguing, but I have doubts about him ever becoming a starter or even how much we would want to spend to keep him.
On a more general note, I really think the Wiz should (and will) just start the year with what they have. If things don’t work out, or if we think we are just one or two pieces away from being a serious contender, then Miller’s $9.7M expiring contract will be much more valuable close to the trade deadline. (I know I know, I’m missing the whole point of this series. I’ll be quiet now.)
Getting buckets since 2003.

Not a good return for Miller's expiring
Posey’s old and has a long contract, while Wright is pointless with McGuire also here.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Can't see the benefit of the deal
It makes Wizards go from having too many guards to too my small forwards. I don’t consider Posey and Wright to be defensive stoppers, though they both are better defenders at the 2 and 3 than anyone currently on the team. Posey is on the downside of his career. Main reason for leaning towards disliking the trade however is that IF Miller just had an off year last year, his 3 point shooting can cause the Wizards an incredible offensive scheme that can make up for the lack of an inside consistent offensive presence.
Yeah, it;s no good
It makes sense on paper, on value grounds, but we have too much talent(!) for the minutes we have to go around, so this doesn’t work.
Given there’s 240 minutes to distribute, there’s no trade worthwhile if it doesn’t improve some of those minutes. This one certainly does not. We’re currently looking at (approximately) the below, so whoever we trade for as to either be measurably better than McGee or Blatche OR not cost us anything better than Dominic or Oberto. (Nick’s a little different case – a high potential guy that probably doesn’t see minutes until Foye or Miller goes away.) This pasts the first test, but the cost is too great.

Yeah, I don't like it
I think Posey is EXACTLY the type of gritty role player the Wizards need more of, but he costs too much. And Wright seems like a skinnier version of Dom.
No thank you
The only way this makes any sense is if you think Julian Wright is going to turn into a good player. I don’t. We’re getting worse and taking on worse contracts.
Why are we so anxious to get rid of Mike Miller?

Because he has an expiring contract, can play
And will cost us a decent amount to re-sign next year when that should be Haywood money and possibly Foye money.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Yep
It’s either Miller or Foye in 2010-11 and beyond for us, but most likely not both. Personally, I would rather keep Miller and trade Foye, because I believe Miller to be a better fit alongside of Arenas and I also believe Foye will net us more value in a trade since he has a lot more upside. But I can definitely see and consider arguments for the other way around, especially if Foye takes huge strides this season.

I know what these guys were worth last year
but does everyone think a team is going to pay 7 million and double that (if the lux tax is lower next year) for guys like Foye and Miller? I think these are exactly the guys who are going to be hurt by the economy and have to settle for smaller contracts next summer. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part.

I Hope So
I think these are exactly the guys who are going to be hurt by the economy and have to settle for smaller contracts next summer.
Both of these guys I would assume would be good for the MLE in any other summer, but maybe not next summer. If they both would except around $3.5 million to play for us, I’d be all for it. Unfortunately, I think it is more likely that at least one will command more.

I third this
I really want to see what Miller can do. We desperately missed RMJr last year, and Miller seems like RMJr x 1000.
Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!
trade
Miller and foye arent going anywhere. The wolves, I mean the wiz arent letting them go.. Miller is quite happy to come off the bench and this makes him an unusual Wiz. The wiz have eleven starters with only two, Miller and Jamison willing to sit. All trades will be next season and I think it will involve Butler. Stevenson and/or James will be gone before the season is over.

The Wiz would keep Foye and Miller, but trade Caron?
What?
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Actually
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Caron traded if things don’t go as planned this year. He IS our most valuable trade asset, and I think that this is the make or break year for the “Big Three.”
But I don’t see him being traded BEFORE either of the other two.
I'm Confused
Miller is quite happy to come off the bench and this makes him an unusual Wiz. The wiz have eleven starters with only two, Miller and Jamison willing to sit.
The last time Jamison came off the bench, he hated it and bitched about it. I have seen no comment from him recently that would lead me to believe he has changed his mind on this. And I have never seen a quote from Mike Miller saying he would be happy coming off the bench, although he did in Minny. Do you have any links to this information?
All trades will be next season and I think it will involve Butler.
Maybe, but I still think it is in the Wizards’ best interests to keep Butler and trade either Miller or Foye. Both Miller and Foye will have added value because of their expiring contracts, so either of them might be able to give us value close to what Butler might bring back in any case, when you consider the dire salary cap implications.
Stevenson and/or James will be gone before the season is over.
I agree about James, but I doubt the Wizards will be able to trade Stevenson easily because of his back. Yet if his back is healthy again and he can return to previous form, I think he could make a useful backup SG. We’ll see.

I Want More Value
Mike Miller is both a big expiring contract and a good player who is still relatively young. Posey and Wright are decent enough players, but I think some teams will be willing to give us more for Miller as the trading deadline approaches due to the drastic salary cap projections. Maybe even a borderline All-Star.

Posey is done
This is an awful trade. Posey is surviving on reputation alone. He is no longer a difference maker on D. I wouldn’t even trade James for Posey because of Posey’s contract.
I’m all for acquiring a defensive swing man. And I’m even open to trading Miller to get one. But the guy we get better be good and still in his prime. Battier seems to be the obvious choice. Or maybe we can trade scraps to land Bowen on a one-year rental.
Houston fans on the RealGM trade board like Miller for Battier + Barry. I’d do that in a heartbeat.
Maybe we could look to trade Foye or Young for Courtney Lee.
I'm not ready to give up Miller without knowing our 3 point shooting situation
The guys we have, none of them are 3 point specialists as I thought Miller was. I like the idea of a guy like that on the floor to stretch the defenses. I mean Arenas hits his threes and Mike James can connect but James is way too streaky and Arenas (or guys like Butler & Jamison) that’s not really the game you want them playing. Now I don’t know about Foye, maybe he’s a solid 3 pt shooter but I would assume his game is closer to Arenas than a long range specialist.

Our 3-point situation is just fine
We have Arenas and Foye who are both superb marksmen. Butler and Jamison can shoot 3’s at an above-average clip for forwards. And Nick Young is looking like he’ll rebound and at least regain his rookie form from behind the arc. And there’s even the chance that Stevenson will heal and regain his 2006 form.
We may not have the very best 3-point shooting squad in the entire league, but we’re certainly in good shape in that department. 3-point shooting ranks far, far below perimeter defense as a concern for this team. Besides, Battier can shoot the 3-ball too.
It really depends on Foye, I think
He has to understand his strength and shoot more threes, since he’s good at catching and shooting. If he gets that, I think Miller is a bit redundant and can be traded away.
