"There are certain guys in the league that have an established reputation and you know what they can do, that they bring it every night. Steph is one of those guys. I've known Steph since high school, and the things that he's accomplished as a person and as a player speak volumes. He's one of those guys that can't do anything but help the team out and make it a better team."

dear god - i cannot think of a worse idea
for a team already loaded with guards, and young, impressionable players on whom much rests.

I would favour DeBrick Stevenson and ... hell ... even Mike James over Marbury in our backcourt
Eddie Jordan likes to shoot dogs, doesn't he?!
Really?
Granted Starbury did not look like much for Boston (maybe a couple of glints but on the whole not good)… but if he has anything left, and with Flip as his coach… Antawn is not completely nuts to say this.
That said, our needs are truly elsewhere.
exactly - before you even get to character issues, if he can still play, or any of that
you have to ask why the wiz would even think about adding another guard

I’d take Marbury over both of them… But keep in mind that that isn’t a compliment to any of the three.
Look Mr. James, I lived near the Chesapeake Bay for the first 21 years of my life, at times as close as a 5 minute walk. I know about crabs. And let me tell you something about crabs: they travel every time they get in the lane.
Good Lord Have Mercy Please No
Does it take a genius to see that EVERY team Marbury has ever played for has been WAYYY better once he leaves. Minny? Check. NJ? Check. Phoenix? Check. Team USA? Check. NY? Check. I don’t think it’s an accident.
Seriously, the only reason I could see to sign Marbury is to reap the rewards that inevitably follow getting rid of him.

Do you think that's why Boston signed him?
So they can get the inevitable boost of letting him go? Hey, that could work for us, too!
Yes
Steph is crazy and a team killer, and we have no need for his skill set on this team. High risk, low reward
Antawn is smoking crack this off season -
he needs to go back to Pilates and Yoga and not talk about Marbury anymore
I honestly wonder if the entire quote is tongue-in-cheek and the reporter didn't get it
It’s HoopsWorld, after all.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Something tells me that
if it was t-i-c, he wouldn’t have named names. This isn’t Shaq we’re talking about.
Let's say he was just doing a favor for a friend...
Steph is a proud guy who has to be at a pretty low ebb right now and I would guess Antawn was trying to help him with a bit of an endorsement knowing that there is no chance he is coming here but he does need a gig somewhere.
Marbury has had a very above average career
and he did have some great years as a youngster under Flip Saunders. But the only way I let him on the team is if we can get rid of Stevenson and James without paying them. At that point, I’d put him as the 2nd PG to allow Crittenton to develop for another year as a legit backup point. Marbury is crazy, but he is better — and would be cheaper — than either/both Stevenson and James. Maybe a sign-and-trade with someone to get one of those two off the roster? I’d consider it, personally. For one year only, of course.
Also, honestly, it should seem pretty interesting that SO many veterans in this league have been endorsing him over the past year or so. All that being said, he is really… reeeeeeeeeeaaaallllllllyyyy crazy.

AJ being the ambassador.
The guy is a team captain and he’s attempting to put a good spin on the Marbury to DC rumors and DC leaks saying there’s no way this would happen.
At least that’s what I would hope.
But I’m not opposed to Marbury if the need is there (which it’s not right now). I would ask, who would you rather have based on skills alone – Mike James or Stephon Marbury? And the team-killer reputation that Marbury has – I think that can be counteracted by the strong leadership the Wiz already have in place in Haywood, Jamison, Butler and Arenas. The biggest knock on Marbury and the best argument for his team-killer reputation is with the Knicks – who on the Knicks could stand up to the guy? What player on that team could actually say, “Sit the hell down and shut the hell up” and have the rest of the team backing him? Marbury looked bad with Boston, but you didn’t hear any grumblings about him because Boston has got 3 guys that rule the roost.
Bottom line for me is there’s no telling how Gil will do for a full season and I’m not 100% convinced on Crittendon as a full time backup yet. I would be okay with Marbury if the need arose.

Actually
every time Marbury was shipped from a team it was because of his attitude problems. And the crap he pulled in New York is unacceptable. The organization was at fault as well, but leaving his teammates hanging was a b#@ch move.
I disagree about his NY fallout
Usually I don’t support a guy who doesn’t put personal feelings aside for the best of the team. But in this case, I supported him 100%. The Knicks basically told him, “We don’t want you playing for us anymore. In fact we dislike you so much that we won’t let you play for anyone. You will stay on our roster and, if we ever decide to throw you a bone and let you play, you’d better smile and thank us for the privilege.”
What?! Look, if you don’t want the guy around, let him go from his contract. But don’t give me that charade of telling him to be ready to come off the bench when all of a sudden you find yourself without depth. If you wanted him on the team, then you should have been giving him an opportunity for playing time whenever he was ready to play (i.e. every game). If you didn’t want him on the team, then when teams starting inquiring about trades and the media starting asking if he would be released, why was the answer to both always “no”?
Let the man pursue his career as a basketball player. Yes, they were still paying him. But they were paying him to get out of shape and become less and less attractive to potential future employers. They did their best to sabotage the end of his career. That’s why I never felt for the Knicks last fall.
Look Mr. James, I lived near the Chesapeake Bay for the first 21 years of my life, at times as close as a 5 minute walk. I know about crabs. And let me tell you something about crabs: they travel every time they get in the lane.
like I said
I think the organization is at fault as well. In fact, I think the league should have intervened when it was evident what was going on. The Knicks should have been disciplined for that. BUT you won’t convince me that Marbury is without fault. His wolf cry doesn’t impress me. He’s been on the wrong side too many times.
Aside from that, my problem with him refusing to enter the game is two fold. First and foremost, his teammates. THEY needed him, and they didn’t have anything to do with the other crap. Second is obviously his contract. There are so many folds to this one. For one, it comes down to it being his job. This is an age old argument here. No matter what I thought of my employer, if I’m told to do something, I have to do it. Period. But what really drives this part home, to me, is the actual pay. Sports Illustrated jusr came out with a list of last year’s top 50 paid athletes. Marbury was #17. That’s above Jason Kidd, Vince Carter,Paul Pierce and Carmelo Anthony. Others were behind him too, I just don’t remember them all. Also, these figures include endorsements as well, adding to the list of parties he’s responsible to. So I guess my point with that is, if a guy is getting paid 20 million dollars to play ONE game, then he needs to play. Regardless of how ridiculous and petty the organization acted, they still paid him. Meaning they had a contract, and the team held up to their end of the deal. He didn’t.
If my boss
told me to stay away from work because he didn’t want me around any more, you’d better believe I’d want another job. And if after a month, he called me and told me that three people just called in sick and that I need to come into work, I’d be very inclined to say, “Sorry, can’t make it.” Even if I was still getting a paycheck. They paid Marbury to be a basketball player, not a substitute teacher. You’re right, he’s been on the wrong side a lot in his career. But I don’t count this as one of those times. If his teammates really needed him, they would have said something to the coach or GM about it. That entire organization (from owners to executives to coaches to players) seemed to turn its back on him. And you expect him to have loyalty to teammates like that? “With friends like this…”
Look Mr. James, I lived near the Chesapeake Bay for the first 21 years of my life, at times as close as a 5 minute walk. I know about crabs. And let me tell you something about crabs: they travel every time they get in the lane.
that's
a perfectly valid argument that I understand (and have heard before). I would counter by saying that if MY company told me to stay home for all but one day, while still paying me, I would be ecstatic. Most people would. The difference is that Marbury PLAYS the GAME of basketball for a living. Meaning his JOB is a lot more fun than most people’s. But the wild card is his pay. Your company is not paying you $20 million. I find it hard to believe that you would balk at working one day a year for 20 million dollars. I could be wrong though, as I don’t know you personally.
The other part of this that is not discussed much is how it got to that point. I will concede that the Knicks are (maybe were) a poorly run organization. However, let’s be honest, Stephon Marbury is no angel. I am sure there are behind the scenes circumstances that added to the equation. As awful as that team was, Marbury’s talents could have helped a great deal. He was probably the best player on the team. And fans were calling for him to play as well, so I have a hard time believing that a simple grudge from the incoming coach caused all that ridiculous behavior by both sides.
Again, this is just my opinion. Unfortunately, like I said, much of this went on behind close doors, so all we have to go off of is conjecture, mainly from the laughable New York media. So all we can do is offer opinion.
DeShawn Stevenson didn't have the greatest reputation coming out Utah
He had that malcontent reputation after run-ins with Jerry Sloane. He managed to do some PR reclamation in Orlando and came to Wiz and played well above his skill-set.
Sometimes it’s worth taking a flyer on a guy. God knows the Wiz have had enough duds come through their system, maybe one or two will go our way.

Ernie said "three deep at each spot"
So it would seem we are covered at point.
However, with Mike James and DeShawn, we are only two deep at:
“Past his prime guard who doesn’t like sitting deep on the bench”
That's the best
argument I’ve heard for signing Starbury all week.
