UPDATE: Your Wizards Big Man Free Agent Targets
Chris Wilcox, Sean Marks, Fabricio Oberto, Jamaal Magloire and Mikki Moore.
Excited yet Wizards fans?
I'd be 'content' with Marks or Oberto.
Wilcox? Talented, but fairly questionable as a team player. I'll leave it to Grunfeld & Co. to judge if he's motivated -- he's still young (27 in September), so he should be.
Mikki Moore. Heck no. He's been sort of our ideal free-agency Antichrist here on Bullets Forever.
However, I'd almost rather have Moore than Magloire.
Lazy, slow, out of shape, unmotivated, plays for himself ... all well-known descriptors of Triple-A Jamaal's game.
I don't know the guy personally, but I'm fairly confident in saying he's NOT the type of 'leadership' guy we want slouching around the locker room.
And if the Wizards do happen to sign Moore or Magloire, the floodgates of pissed off will surely open on this very site.
Hope y'all are having a great weekend.

Boo
None of the above. They all suck.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Au contraire
They are all veterans, therefore, they are all super-fantastic.
Oberto must be able to help us
How broken down is he really?
Wilcox is the only real talent on that list, but Oberto or Sean Marks could actually help in areas of need, at least a little bit.
Very well said
Especially considering the fact that in his first Summer League game, Blair had a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds…. 4 for 7 shooting – and he caused 4 fouls on the other team’s big men)
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Don't go there
Please? I am still sore over that!

impressive, but
I’m not going to pine over a buy who dominates in summer league
and you shouldn't
but that doesn’t mean we can’t take notice. The only way the Blair discussion goes away is if whatever bum we sign for the LLE outperforms him.
and the thing is that DB would be motivated to push AB for playing time- much more so that some veteran who has given up on improving himself. And there won’t be any toxic attitude. As it stands, the Wiz just give the time to these kids. McGee seems like he will work hard to improve and do the things he needs to do. AB?

EXACTLY
I’m tired of hearing we need to “clear room” for Blatche and McGee. I want them to succeed as much as anyone, AND I think they need more minutes. But I don’t think it should be handed to them. Blatche has already shown the tendency to be lazy. I would rather he had a legitimate threat pushing him to play hard(er).
I know that these guys can give us five fouls and all
But would Magloire or Wilcox really give us anything that Blatche couldn’t? I hate the idea of signing someone completely useless coughMikkiMoorecough just for the sake of depth in some vague sense. Let’s face it, none of those guys will do a thing for us that Blatche or even McGuire couldn’t, so I’d rather just see us save some money. Signing a free agent seems pointless, too, since if we were interested in adding any salary, we’d have drafted Blair.
you know what?
Scratch that. Magloire would actually be a decent addition to the team, at least against Shaq. He might be worth keeping around, but I still don’t think he’s even worth the 900,000 dollars or so he’d be paid. It’s Abe’s money, though.

I think my expectations are lowered to I hope they don’t sign a knucklehead who will disrupt the locker room or distract our young talent

NO Locker room knuckle heads
That would eliminate Magloire.

I'd rather have
Wilcox from that bunch. I’m not sure what we’re going to do with Dixon, but maybe he, or someone else in the area, could get through to him. The guy has loads of talent, just another example of a player leaving school before he’s ready. He did it to “make money”, but in reality he probably would have made much more if he had stayed at MD, matured, and honed his game.
Anyway, if we’re gonna have a bench warmer, it may as well be someone who could surprise.
As for Magloire, I don’t know what happened to that dude. He was an All-Star at one point. I remember wating the Wizards to get him 4 or 5 years ago. Now he’s a bum.
Even if Wilcox was motivated and committed
he still probably wouldn’t be worth having. He’s primarily an offensive player who can’t really defend big men due to his lack of muscle, and we’ve already got enough guys who can score. I really just want someone like one of Houston’s bigs, and Wilcox is almost like the polar opposite of a Carl Landry or Chuck Hayes.

Dixon is gone
even if we were willing to pay him, why would we with 7 guards on the roster?

I didn't
expect Dixon to stay, I just didn’t know if he was under contract still.

Floodgates of pissed off
wonderful description.
Wilcox has some Offensive potential, but has NEVER put forth any effort on the Defensive end – So as Truth said, he plays for himself – not for the team.
Marks is another guy that with no strength, and no inclination to play defense. But he won’t be a locker room cancer.
And that leaves Mikki Moore……
I think I’d rather have Michael Ruffin or Calvin Booth.
If Oberto has ANYTHING left – San Antonio would want to re-sign him…. So if SA doesn’t want him, the Wizards should avoid him as well.
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Your Oberto argument is actually my main justification for not wanting Mikki Moore
I figure that if Boston chose to play Brian Scalabrine over him when Big Baby and Perkins were their only other healthy big men, he can’t be worth having.

Wilcox please
I’d rather have Michael Ruffin or Calvin Booth…. hmm I really hope you switch to being a Cleveland fan becuase thats a horrible move for our team. The less in toronto thanks to Michael Ruffin
Chris Wilcox welcome to DC!
I wasn't kidding
Both Ruffin and Booth are better suited for what the Wizards need than ANY of the names above…
Both can play defense… both can rebound… both can hold their position in the post… they won’t make mistakes… and they both could provide 8-10 minutes and 6 fouls…
Regardless if you show every dunk Wilcox has ever made – or run the Ruffin mistake in Toronto over and over….. Wilcox still cannot be depended upon to guard a pine tree. Magloire is lazy and moves like a pine tree; Oberto is used up; Sean Marks is a twig, and Mikki Moore is just plain bad.

I am excited, I am excited!
Well…..the addition of deep bench ‘big stiffie’ type player means we will see more of Blatche and McGee. Count me as rose colored, but I think this could work out well.
Originally, I had figured that McGee would be a back pine guy this year, but it sounds more and more like he is going to play some; hopefully he can match last seasons total minutes, but in a more consistent pattern.
In fairness, this might cost us a bit in the short term, though maybe not too bad. But even by the end of this year, we might just be giving ourselves a sloppy wet smoochie for putting up with the growing pains and seeing young Mr. Wookie all grow’ed up.
I do agree a big ugly man with six fouls and block peg of a rump roast would be just the thing to have around on the playoff roster, especially if we’re looking at Cleveland or Orlando.
Yes, the commitment to McGee and Blatche is implicit in all this...
and it helps explain why management took the $2.5 million and passed on Blair…
I am a bit surprised not to see Shelden Williams on this list, but I think the same youth vs age argument holds true here, as well. A slightly bulked-up Taser gives you the same skills with a plus of proven commitment to the Wizards.
So, the choice here is between a space-filling big man (Magloire being the prototype though by no means would I like to see him on the Wizards…) and a more classic 4 (Oberto if he has any gas left in his tank at all)… The key here may be what we see from Heytfelt and Aminu in Las Vegas… If Heytfelt has any upside at all, I would think he might become the space-filling option at the rookie minimum, with Oberto as the other signing for vet minimum…
One last thing, since we know that EG frequently omits the guy who is really on his mind, I would be willing to put a side bet that if a former UMD is signed here it will be Joe Smith and not Chris Wilcox (or Oberto).
I would love for them to sign Joe Smith
Veteran guy. Knows how to play. Fundamentally sound. Can score from the wings…. but I wouldn’t exactly call him an inside banger…

Pops is looking better and better
I’m curious about our lack of interest in Rasho. His combination of size, experience and skill seemed like it could make him a valuable addition. Maybe he’s priced out of our range.
Of the rest of the group, I’m inclined toward Oberto. He’s a proven role player with some size and skill who won’t bring much, but he won’t take anything away. Can’t say the same about Wilcox, despite his obvious physical talent. He definitely seems like the kind of guy who puts up solid offensive numbers for bad teams (which remain bad in part because of his selfish play). A poor man’s Zach Randolph (ugh).
But the concerns about Oberto also give me pause, and if he doesn’t have anything left, the one thing I would hope for from this signing would be a guy who brings at least one dynamic skill. That sounds like Pops Mensah-Bonsu. Acquiring a guy who can rebound, block shots and play defense would be really valuable. That said, anyone we get for this LLE or less will have serious flaws as well. Pops’ numbers on defense against centers are a big concern (it would be nice to have someone halfway decent against 5s in this spot).

Appearance of Depth
Why sign some bum for the appearance of depth? A bums a bum, and if we arent willing to acquire someone who can play the game like a Drew Gooden, then why throw away two million a year on a Magloire, Wilcox, or Mikki Moore that passes the height and a pulse threshold and not much else. Might as well save that 2 million for next summer.
This is a good point
Why sign someone who isn’t good just for the sake of signing someone? Why not wait? If the need arises during the season, someone as good as these guys (Oberto excepted — I think he’s good) will likely be available.
kwame brown
if you guys really would rather have brown over wilcox you are as dumb as michael jordan for wanting to draft him. brown is one of the biggest busts of all time. and he sucks. cnt shoot run rebound pass dribble or play d. wilcox is better in EVERY aspect of the game.
Brown is a
waste. BUT he is probably better than some of the options we’ve been looking at. Doesn’t matter though, the organization would never bring him back anyway. Moot point.
Browns way better than Wilcox on defense, which is what we need
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
He could never play in Washington again
but you’re right Mike….
Kwame has quietly gathered the shattered pieces of his career, and started putting them back together again. He’s transformed himself into a solid defensive player. And, although he has some physical deficiencies on Offense (small hands, poor basketball IQ), his good positional defense, size and rebounding make him a valuable addition to a team’s bench.
He should be a good back-up center in the League for years to come. The worst thing that ever happened to Kwame Brown was being selected #1 in the draft.
