Open Thread 1: The NBA Draft

This is the first of two open threads for tonight's NBA Draft.  Feel free to comment here about anything you see.

When I get a chance, I'll flush out much more why I'm really mad that Orlando got Vince Carter and we didn't.  My justifications were pretty weak earlier because I was in a meeting and my attention was divided.

Either way, comment away!  Happy draft night!

I still like our trade over trying to get Carter

he just wouldn’t mesh well IMO

I thought

and still think that Carter would have been a good back court mate for Gilbert Arenas – and he still has some gas in the tank.
Plus the fact that he and Jamison are brothers-in-law, and ex-Tar Heels, in addition to being close friends would mean Carter could be comfortable in D.C. right off the bat.

Just read Kelly Dwyer's take on the Carter trade

The article says they may let Hedo walk and just plug Pietrius in. It also says they’re willing to go over the tax threshold, so they may sign Gortat too. Orlando is STACKED.

I'm skeptical

But, they are definitely better than we are.

O well, I don’t think that we expected the #5 pick to turn us into the champs over night. We will have to wait for the games to be played …. or for Ernie to land Camby with our spare assets (still hoping for this one)

by Manimal Smith on Jun 25, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea ... not a bad call

But I like the spot up shooting of Miller.

I agree with you

Especially when you consider what he was dealt for.

I’m actually really angry about this, so angry that I probably shouldn’t think about it any more. It’ll just piss people off.

I thought Foye really played off of Miller the whole time...

but I like what Miller is saying… that there will be nights he might not score as well, but will be looking to help the team in other areas (rebounding, assists, etc.). It’s a breath of fresh air to hear that coming from a Wizards player and have the experience to back up the talk.

by Craig_ on Jun 25, 2009 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought only 2 things were noteworthy - both were comments from Flip

1) Flip opens up by saying (paraphrasing) that “we must have done something right because Cleveland and Orlando both made trades of their own after we did ours.” My Subtext: “how the F did Orlando get Carter while we gave up the 5th pick and just got these guys?”

2) Flip acknowledges the fact that we have only 4 bigs and mutters something about picking someone up later on. My take: Obviously he can’t tell Ernie what to do, but he’s telling Ernie what he better do.

Let’s hope the Wizards address this by the end of the night. No cash considerations please!

Probably don't like Sergio & ..

They have too many picks too sign. Their trades seem geared toward consolidating picks they can’t use to get slightly better ones -

Seems like a home run trade for Sacramento though – Sergio could potentially start for them (though their rookie probably will).

by Manimal Smith on Jun 25, 2009 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Sergio's not very good though

Plus, it clears minutes for Bayless. Makes sense for both teams.

Alston wasn't going to play much because Nelson was coming back

He’s pointless. They got him when Nelson got hurt and flipped him at the right time. Lee was going to lose minutes to Carter anyway. And they still have Redick, who can play a bit, and Pietrus.

It’s such a good deal for Orlando, IMO. They can go over the tax to keep Hedo or Gortat, but they were going to do that anyway. And, as KD said, if they lose Hedo, plug in Pietrus, have Carter run the s&r (he’s a very good passer, plus Nelson is back) and don’t miss a beat.

Sigh, how can the Bullets

keep getting fucking screwed. Holy shit.

2 of our best 4 players miss the whole season, 1 of which just signed a max contract (almost), we then lose the lottery in a draft that only has ONE sure fire awesome player. We trade the crap pick we had in the hopes that we could salvage a bad situation and then the second best player in the draft falls to the team we traded with.

This is really ridiculous – the Basketball gods owe us big time.

When we get right down to it though – was Rubio going to help us more in the next year than Foye/Miller?
