Open Thread 1: The NBA Draft
This is the first of two open threads for tonight's NBA Draft. Feel free to comment here about anything you see.
When I get a chance, I'll flush out much more why I'm really mad that Orlando got Vince Carter and we didn't. My justifications were pretty weak earlier because I was in a meeting and my attention was divided.
Either way, comment away! Happy draft night!

Watching...
Some good things are being said… but I didn’t expect anyone to say anything detrimental or “out there”.
I proposed a trade for Vince Carter last year
and was roundly dismissed for it….

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
I still like our trade over trying to get Carter
he just wouldn’t mesh well IMO
Representing DC with Wizards & Stuff - Truth About It.net and Bullets Forever.
I thought
and still think that Carter would have been a good back court mate for Gilbert Arenas – and he still has some gas in the tank.
Plus the fact that he and Jamison are brothers-in-law, and ex-Tar Heels, in addition to being close friends would mean Carter could be comfortable in D.C. right off the bat.
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Just read Kelly Dwyer's take on the Carter trade
The article says they may let Hedo walk and just plug Pietrius in. It also says they’re willing to go over the tax threshold, so they may sign Gortat too. Orlando is STACKED.
I'm skeptical
But, they are definitely better than we are.
O well, I don’t think that we expected the #5 pick to turn us into the champs over night. We will have to wait for the games to be played …. or for Ernie to land Camby with our spare assets (still hoping for this one)

Yea ... not a bad call
But I like the spot up shooting of Miller.
Representing DC with Wizards & Stuff - Truth About It.net and Bullets Forever.
I agree with you
Especially when you consider what he was dealt for.
I’m actually really angry about this, so angry that I probably shouldn’t think about it any more. It’ll just piss people off.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Did Ernie even inquire?
It wouldnt have saved us money. You know that’s why he didn’t even try.

Both guys seem like it ... but I didn't catch the entire thing.
Representing DC with Wizards & Stuff - Truth About It.net and Bullets Forever.
I thought Foye really played off of Miller the whole time...
but I like what Miller is saying… that there will be nights he might not score as well, but will be looking to help the team in other areas (rebounding, assists, etc.). It’s a breath of fresh air to hear that coming from a Wizards player and have the experience to back up the talk.
Good ... not let's hope he plays off his teammates on the court.
Representing DC with Wizards & Stuff - Truth About It.net and Bullets Forever.
I thought only 2 things were noteworthy - both were comments from Flip
1) Flip opens up by saying (paraphrasing) that “we must have done something right because Cleveland and Orlando both made trades of their own after we did ours.” My Subtext: “how the F did Orlando get Carter while we gave up the 5th pick and just got these guys?”
2) Flip acknowledges the fact that we have only 4 bigs and mutters something about picking someone up later on. My take: Obviously he can’t tell Ernie what to do, but he’s telling Ernie what he better do.

Those prostitutes

On point #2...
Let’s hope the Wizards address this by the end of the night. No cash considerations please!

no link yet, but this is from Henry Abbott
Representing DC with Wizards & Stuff - Truth About It.net and Bullets Forever.
Probably don't like Sergio & ..
They have too many picks too sign. Their trades seem geared toward consolidating picks they can’t use to get slightly better ones -
Seems like a home run trade for Sacramento though – Sergio could potentially start for them (though their rookie probably will).

Sergio's not very good though
Plus, it clears minutes for Bayless. Makes sense for both teams.

Vitale's talking

You mean to tell me...
that we just got a former rookie of the year in our most recent trade? AWESOME!
I'm back from work
Long story, metro sucks.
I’m also really pissed that Orlando got Vince Carter for that package and we couldn’t. But I’ll expand on that more in the post-draft write-up when I calm down.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Orlando just went to the NBA Finals... the Wizards...

Alston wasn't going to play much because Nelson was coming back
He’s pointless. They got him when Nelson got hurt and flipped him at the right time. Lee was going to lose minutes to Carter anyway. And they still have Redick, who can play a bit, and Pietrus.
It’s such a good deal for Orlando, IMO. They can go over the tax to keep Hedo or Gortat, but they were going to do that anyway. And, as KD said, if they lose Hedo, plug in Pietrus, have Carter run the s&r (he’s a very good passer, plus Nelson is back) and don’t miss a beat.

Getting really tired of this
Rookie GM Kahn absolutely strips Ernie.
DID PRADA?
Really blow a gasket and leave?

Ernie knows he can’t trade the other pick for cash… right? RIGHT?

Rubio's Impact on the Bullets
When we get right down to it though – was Rubio going to help us more in the next year than Foye/Miller?
I don’t think so, which means this was a good short term vs. long term trade but a HORRIBLE overall trade.
Well, we also dropped a lot of bad contracts off the books.
Considering we have a two/three year window for a championship with our current lot, I’m not overly stressing.
Expiring contracts
are not bad contracts, especially in a recession. the only bad contract was songailas which had a few years left on it.

Ernie on Wash Post Live
Ernie was interviewed on Washington Post Live and said pretty much the same thing about Rubio. They asked specifically about Rubio and he pretty much shrugged it off and said the Rubio wouldn’t help in the near term.
He knows better
(cough..Frederick Weiss.. cough)

What is Ernie's contract situation?
Is he up in the next 2 years? B/c that is starting to explain our decisions more than anything else.
by Manimal Smith on Jun 25, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions
b/c he just made one of the most
dumbest mistake i his life!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is the NBA disbanding after next year?
Rubio would have helped the Wizards for the next 10 years. Foye and Miller will be gone after next season.
If they play well, they will
If they play poorly, we can have em both back. What a beaut of a situation

When we have to rebuild because this team doesnt work.
Rubio would be the center piece of the future. Now that future is very uncertain because it’s sure as hell not randy foye and mike miller
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laydODN6xVk
Rubio and Gilbert could have been centerpieces together. The idea that Jamison is a championship caliber player is a joke. The idea that this team is built to compete for a championship is another joke.
The Bullets define success as reaching the playoffs. Yippee.
im just
sick and tired of this team man, this is such a joke. rubio is in my radar for a long time
Oh no ...
Flynn already speakin in the third person. Godwuzawiz thinks this is a bad sign for him in the league.
funny
but I don’t feel so lonely right now. I didn’t like the trade BEFORE I knew we could get Rubio. This is disheartening.
That was worth it to see the Knicks sad
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
My thoughts exactly ... screw the Knicks.

HAHAHAHAHAHA
Love the crowd reaction when Curry got drafted…..

Carter
and Dwight vs. Lebron and Shaq is what the East will be about this year. So saying that this trade helped us SHORT TERM means nothing.
Shaq is going to close lanes in the paint and it's going to force LBJ into tighter spaces.
It’s not going to be all fun and games with Mike Brown coaching that squad.
Is Orlando going to retain
Turkoglu? They’re going to be disgusting next year.

Rubio not even playing in NBA (this year)?
Rubio is having a presser on CSN+ (RCN channel 371)
A reporter from NY is telling Rubio that it’s VERY COLD in Minnesota. Rubio is saying that his mom HATES cold places and that he will have to talk to his agent if he’ll stay or not.
Kahn could look like an idiot here…..

It's not his fault that his European team has an insane buyout
That’s way unproportional to his salary.

Rubio will get crazy endorsement deals though.
Of course, much less in MN than he would have in Sacto or even DC. His agent screwed him, I think.

Ernie
is laughing his ass off at the Knicks. Time will tell if this trade failed for passing up CURRY, who could have been a 3-pt shooter and solid backup for Arenas in year one, and a backup plan if Arenas goes down to injury. Ernie better hope he sucks, but I don’t see that happening.
wait, really?

ESPN decided
they had enough self-promoting, over-opinionated, non-reporting gasbags on staff without him.
He was panhandling outside of a metro stop today
I gave him a dime.
Shaq deal was nothing
I mean he cant be worse than the two nothings they gave up to get him, but theres no way he gets them over the hump. He’s a shell of a player now, he’s ready to take his seat between Barkley and Kenny Smith after next season
