Marvin Williams v. Caron Butler
Atlanta Hawks blog Hoopinion looks at Caron Butler and Marvin Williams side-by-side. The results are somewhat surprising.

I see what Brett is trying to do
And I somewhat agree with his point (Marvin’s underrated), but Caron Butler is a way different player playing a very different role than when he was younger. Using career stats obscured that a bit. Butler grew into a very different player at age 28 than when he started as a rookie. It wasn’t just natural growth in a similar role — the guy played for three different teams as a key player, a useless bench guy and a key player again.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Sure, context matters
Anyway, thought I’d see what Wizards fans thought of the comparison. About the best word I can use to describe Williams is “useful.” Butler? Perhaps a bit more.
I think the title of the article should be "Demonstrating the limits of numbers in sports"
Plus, where does the idea come from that the Wiz want to cut salary and get younger?
I like Williams, but that trade is a no-go.
It makes sense from Atlanta's perspective to not do the deal
Butler’s too similar to Joe Johnson. That, and Marvin is way younger and has some good developing trends in comparison to the player he’s being traded for in Mark Bradley’s proposal. I think that’s all Brett was trying to do with it. It wasn’t his idea to trade Marvin for Caron.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
The other thing about this
Mark Bradley needs to read up on base-year compensation and study it hard, because it kills his trade scenario.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
I don't get it
Why does everyone think the Wizards are trying to cut salary?
They’ve had plenty of chances to do so, and have not pulled the trigger. They have repeatedly said, and shown, that they want to see what the trio of Jamison, Butler and Arenas can do when they’re healthy. They’ve had chances to trade both Butler and Jamison for Cap relief, and they’ve declined. Multiple times, we’ve heard from Abe Polin that he is willing to pay the Luxury Tax – and that he desperately wants another championship.
So where is this “cut salary” stuff coming from?

Wishful thinking
from fans of teams that want to get better on the cheap? It’s amazing that Tyson Chandler and Pau Gasol would be given up for nothing but expirers and marginal prospects, but that really is the exception to the rule.

Also
If the Hawks should be interested in anyone on our team, it should be Nick Young, since he’d be the easiest guy on our team to get who can score in the halfcourt. Marvin Williams is a good young player, too, and they’d be better off trying get a point guard or a center so that Horford can play power forward.

Marv
I like Williams a lot. He needs some room to work, a green light and a coach willing to trust him with more responsibility. It would not surprise me if Detroit waited for ATL to commit resources elsewhere then went after him with an offer sheet.
Marvin to DC would represent a different kind of retooling. It might be the better long term move but I can’t see Ernie doing it.
