Comment from SportzWiz | [e]
Time June 15, 2009 at 10:54 AMFYI. Some non draft news. Sorry to wait but Friday was busy and I thought Monday would be a good day to get this out there. We got to see Andray Blatche do an individual workout following Tyreke Evans’ workout with the team. To say the least VERY IMPRESSIVE.

A lot of positive comments regarding the jumper.

This is newsworthy
and worth a Front Page add…
In the comments section, Sportzwiz goes on to say that Andray has been hanging around VC “quite often” working out. He also said that Andray looked very impressive.

Who knows?
Maybe the coaching change is just what he needed.

Thats what people said
after the first game after EJ got fired.

Wow
Blatche shines in a one on none workout showcasing his jump shooting. That’s totally shocking! Worst case scenario Flip loves what he has in a big jump shooting Center and wants him to stick around. Priorities are all out of whack.

Is this
“he has one or two fundamentals down” impressive or “Luke Skywalker uses the Force to flip out of the Carbonite vat to Darth Vader’s surprise” impressive?

What's impressive
is your Star Wars reference in regards to Andray Blatche.

personally
Andray = JarJar to me at this point.
I’d stretch the comparisons, but I hate mixing worlds.

Maybe more hype from Ernie?
He’s pumping up the 5th pick, and maybe Andray too for good trade bait. I certainly hope something cool happens after all of these crazy trades you guys are proposing. But why can’t we just draft a big bruiser, let Cassell suit up for the playoffs and call it a day? I really don’t see the need to trade Jamison. These guys could play defense if they just tried. Jamison is a baller, and his presence would benefit this team if it were to get deep in the playoffs. Haywood and McGuire are a good basis for defense, and Nick Young continues to improve. I like this team where it is, if they could just stay healthy.

so if
Blatche was there by himself, who got the rebounds? And how long did it take him to foul out?

rec'd
for the foul out comment. Classic.

Wow... lots of pessimism here
I know we heard something similar last year. Nonetheless I think it’s more likely than not that Blatche wears a Wizards uniform next year, and given that likelihood, I’d rather hear news like this than no news at all.
If the Wizards are going to get much deeper into the playoffs this year than either Grunfeld is going to need to pull of a remarkable trade or some of these young guys are going to have to step up their game. I still have hopes for the latter, Blatche included.

Did he try his crossover?
I just really want him to keep working on his ball handling skills. He can fill our need at SG.
Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!

Call me crazy but
I’d like to keep Blatche and Nick Young. Numbers can lie, true, but I think Andre and Nick will have better numbers than Jordan Hill and James Harden next year.

I kind of feel the same way
Especially with Nick, I just know he’s someone who will be worth waiting for. ‘Dray, for all his faults, has improved. Maybe not statistically, but he was a much more controlled defender last year, and even though he still doesn’t look huge or anything, he seems to be solid enough to guard a lot of centers, which I couldn’t say about him in 2007-2008. All he really needs to become a really valuable player is some self-discipline, a decent coach, and someone to force him to run wind-sprints until he’s well-conditioned enough that he’s available to play 30 minutes if we need him to.

Yes... I do think that Blatche and Young may welll outperform...
Hill and Harden next year…. But sn’t that wy we should trade the 5 pick, an expiring contract and, if necessary, Blatche or Young, for someone (Howard, Hinrich, Miller, Crawford, etc) who will complement our core starters and get better numbers than any of the players we part with next year plus a mid first rounder who fills a front court need?
Basically we can’t just stand pat and add another draft pick with “upside” who may hit his stride when Antawn is ready to hang them up and Gil and Caron have passed their peaks.
I do like what Nick Young can do already as a scorer and think he could bust loose in a bigger way over the next two years, so if i had to see the Wizards part with anyone, it would likely be Blatche.
I do like all this discussion because it makes it clear that what the Wizard front office does over the next six weeks will be critical to the team’s success gong forward

Good organizations are patient and develop their young players. We’ll see if that describes the Wizards. Will they develop those two like they did Haywood, or cast them adrift like they did to so many others?

Good organizations
make savvy trades to make their teams better. The Lakers are a prime example – and since they just won the Championship, a very good example to mimic.

Nick Young
needs playing time WITHOUT worrying about getting the hook. Both Ed and Eddie were way too quick to pull the guy if he screwed up once. Meanwhile Stevenson can shoot 22 bricks and play the whole game. Aside from Arenas, Young is the best 1 on 1 player on the team. He should have the ball with the shot clock running down, but only if he has the confidence. That won’t happen if he’s thinking about getting yanked.
Blatche is another story. I was excited about him a few years ago. But he hasn’t gotten any better. I think he’s almost as lazy as Kwame was. Personally, I’d rather trade him while he has some sort of value. If not, he needs to grow up and step up this year.
Actually, what did it in for me with Blatche was when Kwame abused him in the 1st (I think) Detroit game.
by CJHutch on Jun 15, 2009 9:33 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
then he has to do more than just score. He got the hook in part because he didn’t do anything else. Just yanking him is a terrible response but as a coach you can only tell a guy something so many times. Look, kid, play defense, rebound, create for other people and you give us reasons to play you. If all you are good at is scoring, why keep you out there if you’re cold?

Blatche and Nick are going to have a great year this upcoming season
im not down on them at all… they are working hard and look to be maturing by doing the extra stuff to get better this offseason …. and the new coaching has been in there Ear and i think they are listening !
I know the DEVELOPING they are getting by our new coaching is going to show this upcoming season

famous
That’s the infamous off-season wishful thinking mantra. Admit it, you really don’t know how much of it is true beyond that Blatche was worked out by the staff. For all we know he’s shooting jump shots all summer, preparing to get out-rebounded by guards again.
Nick Young is playing in a league with few if any other NBA level players. Was his HS team unavailable? You don’t get better playing against guys that can’t hang with you, challenge your shot or push you in any way.

found some video of Blatche at the Big Tiger Washington DC celebrity game of last week… Vince Carter was there too? also Caron was a coach … not a serious game but Blatche was guarding Carter he also gets a block on Vince towards the end of the video… he looks like he is still gaining muscle his shoulders look bigger and his legs look stronger too

that's all
well and fine, but I’d rather see them put it together during the season. I’m definitely rooting for them to, but I’ll reserve judgement until then.
bq then he has to do more than just score. He got the hook in part because he didn’t do anything else.
I definitely agree with this. Guys don’t realize that defense is more about hard work than actual talent. That’s why guys like Bowen, Battier and, to a lesser extent, Dom McGuire, are able to make a name for themselves. But when a superior athlete (i.e. Jordan, Pippen, Kobe) puts that work in, THAT’S what makes a superstar. I’m not comparing NY to those guys, but he definitely has the athleticism for it. He just needs the drive.
