Media Tour

So were the Junkies fishing for ratings or was this part of Amare’s media tour to drum up a monstrous contract extension? Or both?

He's got a rap label

He could be trying to promote it. He said the same thing about Atlanta that he did about DC, too, when he was there.

What's nice to know

is that there’s even a Stoudemire rumor to deny….

could someone

ask Ernie directly, Is Jamison off limits?

Amare must have been on a media tour, “Amare to the Knicks in 2010” is also in the news.

I’d rather no one ask awkward questions like that. Sure, it’s good journalism or whatever, but at the end of the day, no one should be off limits if an elite player (and I do consider Amare elite) can be brought in so asking who’s available will just result in hurt feelings.

by pantslessyoda1 on May 29, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions

A better way to ask the question would be to make it open-ended

Such as “Under what circumstances would someone like Antawn Jamison be in play for a trade?” Closed-ended questions always lead to bad answers. At least that’s been my experience doing journalism in college.

I could go on about this, but y’all probably don’t want to hear it.

You can’t give them room to dance around it. Most people think there is no way Abe OK’s a deal involving Jamison. Does Ernie have the green light to deal him or not? Lead with the hypothetical if you want, but get the answer to the question in the end or don’t bother.

by Jheiser3 on May 29, 2009 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Ask the direct question....

“Ernie, do you have the green light to trade Antawn Jamison?”

You’re going to get a vanilla answer:
“We think we have a very competitive, very deep ball club – and we believe we can compete with anybody in the league when we’re healthy… We are always looking for ways to improve the roster. We are always looking for ways to improve internally, and we’re going to keep working very hard at it. "

Right

The way I was taught, these are called “exit ramps,” when the subject does not need to work hard to actually answer the question. Asking it in a closed-ended way allows for an easy one-word answer and a bunch of fluff to make it seem like you aren’t being stand-offish as a subject.

The best way is to start broad and, if you don’t get the answer you want, ask something more specific. More material to go on.

What's funny is....

Those are actual quotes from Ernie, just strung together…. to form an answer to a hypothetical question that I made up – and it sounds JUST LIKE the way he’d answer that question.

good stuff

Ernie’s mantra has been in place for some time. With him you know what the first pitch is going to be. You could keep that on a loop.

Since Jamison’s full season in the last year of his contract to now all we really know is that they liked him more than Wally Szcerbiak’s expiring contract.

by Jheiser3 on May 30, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

don't want him anyway

wiz don’t need another offensive black hole who is suspect on defense (at least effort-wise). he’s huge, but is not banger by any means.
watching the playoffs, i’m even more convinced that whatever moves are made this offseason, they MUST acquire at least one really good 3-point shooter. mike james does not count.

The thing about Amare being a black hole on offense

Is that he’s such a good black hole. He may very well be the most efficient volume scorer in the league, and in the right system, he could easily average 30 a game with a true shooting percentage over 60%. He’s not a great rebounder and his defense is mediocre, but if he’s playing next to Gil, Caron, and two defensive specialists, it won’t really matter as much.

And a mediocre defender

is a better defender than Jamison

meh - over-rated.

i am still really weary of him. not sold on his commitment to anything other than scoring. and even if he is a moderate upgrade defensively, the team loses the 3-point shooting (or at least the threat of it) of jamison and the problems that creates for opposing power forwards. also, he is not an upgrade rebounding wise. he’s flashier than jamison, but not enough of an upgrade, in my opinion.

He’s a pretty darn good rebounder.

by MR on May 29, 2009 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

so is jamison

just sayin…
don’t want to give up too much for amare, since imo he’s not a big upgrade over jamison.

I meant

that Jamison is a pretty darn good rebounder. Did I misunderstand the post? Sorry. Man, I’m having an off night. My bad.

Funny

Seems Stoudemire is saying the same kind of things in Chicago, Atlanta, San Antonio and New York…

I won’t be surprised if, by the end of Summer, he hasn’t talked to at least 15 Radio stations in 15 different NBA cities about his desire to play for “their team”…..
