but Arenas will be blamed

remember, he sugested that being a lottery team this year wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

by Pryme on May 19, 2009 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

how appropriate

that movie had tons of problems being made, and the Craven/Williamson team couldn’t re-create the magic they found in “Scream.”

by Pryme on May 19, 2009 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

No, I didn’t forget that awful movie. Draft? What draft? Aren’t the Wizards a top seed? BRB 2006-07

by Fundefined on May 19, 2009 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

Just made the mistake -

of hitting the LA Clippers blog to see how happy they all are. Yep, like to torture myself. I’m still going to go to the draft next month – wizards wig and face paint in tow. But I’m now hoping that I’ll hear the words ‘trade’ announced sometime that night.

by ooba on May 19, 2009 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

Well, it's up to Flip now.

I don’t see Ernie making a big trade. As Mike Lee points out, Ernie wants to see what Gil, Caron and Antawn can do together. Barring injury, Brendan will be the starting center. The only starting position up in the air is SG. I don’t see how we could get a real difference maker, such as Richard Jefferson, at this point.

Anyone on our roster poised to make a leap? Is there a scenario in which our defense becomes above average? Lay out how this team could make it to the ECF next season. Please, someone cheer me up.

by antawnjameson on May 19, 2009 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

Here's my attempt

1. Nick Young gets it together and starts playing like some kind of hybrid between JR Smith and Rip Hamilton
2. Gil, Caron, and AJ stay healthy and play like they did in 2006
3. Brendan stay’s solid, maybe steps it up due to his contract year
4. Blatche gets in good enough shape that he can play more than 20 minutes a night
5. Javale learns where he’s supposed to stand on defense and starts doing deadlifts
6. Lebron James tests positive for steroids and/or heroin

In case #6 doesn't work out

6-b. Hypnotize James to make him want to quit the NBA for a career in ballet.

In cast #6b doesn't work out

6-c The League makes a rule change that makes it illegal for a player to lower his shoulder into a defender’s chest on his way to the basket.

can't wait for wilbons smug column

about this. about how getting the 1st pick is not a strategy for building a winning team, about how wiz are stuck being mediocre. about how awesome lebron james is.

Lebron fails to get his ring in the next two years and leaves Cleveland, I can make it through this. Go Lakers/Nuggets/Magic!!!

by morethesamewiz on May 19, 2009 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

Is it really that bad?

There were only two players considered great, and one has a buyout. I would be happy if we got a really good point guard.

Money on the table

100 dollars to the first person who compiles a video of the Wizards’ card being pulled out for the fifth pick that is followed by a keyboard cat performance. I need to see that now.

Here’s to hoping for a trade. If they decide to keep the pick…DeRozan.

Just tossing out ideas

Phoenix wants to move up, so
Mike James and the #5 for Barbosa and the #14 (the salaries match, and Barbosa has 3 years left on his deal). Wiz take a defender like Terrence Williams with the #14.

by disgrunted on May 19, 2009 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

Sounds like a plan

I agree with Pradamaster about Terrence Williams, but the trade sounds great in principle. Hell, I wouldn’t even mind it if Phoenix kept their pick, too.

by pantslessyoda1 on May 19, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Better yet

We trade for Richardson and take Johnny Flynn or Ty Lawson with the Suns pick

Barbosa?

No thanks. He looked lost when he wasn’t running in D’Antoni’s system.

I’m actually surprised that there hasn’t been more written about what kind of style we’ll play.

didn't he speed things up

the year he had Sprewell, KG and Cassell?

by Pryme on May 19, 2009 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

That's what I'm hoping he does

Like, he’s a good coach, but he doesn’t strike me as a strict system coach or something who will only play one way; he’ll probably run the team to his players’ strengths, which in our case, is their ability to run up and down a basketball court very fast.

by pantslessyoda1 on May 20, 2009 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Wouldn't Pheonix want to trade for #3 or #4?

Who wants the crappy fifth pick, and badly enough to take Mike James?

Sorry

I didn’t mean to untrack the conversation with a trade idea.

This sucks for you guys

In fact, I think lez Boulez got the worst deal because they could have very much used Griffin.

Hope is all well in Bullets land for all of you. Even though Abe Pollin is not my favorite owner (right up there with Papa Glen Taylor and Donald Sterling), you guys are fun to read, and honestly, talk with.

Hope all is well amongst you all. Good luck in the upcoming season!

I don't like him

I think he’s hurt your franchise as much as he’s helped it. And, I resent his changing the team name for really no reason. Yeah, those are stupid reasons I can admit, but they’re mine.

Agreed

Lumping Abe in with Sterling and Taylor is just wrong. He has more championships than many owners in the league. He built two arenas, one in an era when it was common practice for a team’s owner to hold his hand out to the taxpayer. It looks like he’s willing to drop the dime on a team we hope is close this year, and has shown restraint in years when they certainly weren’t good enough.

The worst part

is that poor Blake Griffin will have a great first year and then blow out his acl, mcl and every other cl and never have a great career. Welcome to Clipper-life.

And Saunders makes a good post in Lee's article
Saunders wasn’t allowed in the room, but he appears to be a lock at securing the fifth pick. The last time Saunders was in Secaucus, he represented the Minnesota Timberwolves, who slipped to fifth in 1995. They used that selection to draft Kevin Garnett. “If we can get another Garnett,” Saunders said, “I’ll be okay with that.”

For crying out loud, the Clippers were really lucking winning the 1st AND 2nd pick. Man.

Gotta hand it to Michael Lee. That dude is awesome.

The lottery is just straight up stupid

It has been this way forever.

Chicago, a team only 15 games under .500 in 2007, getting a hometown stud in Rose last year? You have got to be kidding me…

Maybe fans would return to the NBA if they had hope that their terrible ass teams actually had a chance of improving.

The damn NFL uses the logical system, and they seem to be doing fine relative to the NBA’s complete loss of viewership/popularity/credibility.

God forbid basketball allowing teams to build talented young cores like Tampa Bay in baseball or Arizona in football; that would undoubtedly be a detriment to the NBA’s already tremendous growth in popularity, right?

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

by Baltimo on May 20, 2009 1:28 AM EDT reply actions

Welcome to DC, James Harden?

I won’t rehash what I just posted on the Washington Post site… just the punchline.

We don’t have the comfort of a “no-brainer” in this draft.

Mike Dunleavy is gloating something fierce, eh, every dog has his day. I just hope that Griffin rises above the crap in Clipper-land and above all does not suffer the harsh fate of Danny Manning (really a very similarly gifted player to Griffin).

Question is how does a “brainer” play the hand the Wizards have been dealt?

Wilbon's at it again

Granted, it’s nice to see Wilbon not being negative, but did he really just say that the Wizards should explore trading for Zach Randolph or should pick a point guard because Magic Johnson says Gilbert Arenas can’t be effective at the one? He sure looked pretty good in the couple of games at the end of the season.

If the Wizards’ defense is bad now, and it is, imagine how it would look with Arenas and Jonny Flynn in the same backcourt trying to defend opposing shooting guards.

I’m surprised that he didn’t mention James Harden one time in that article.

Since when is Magic Johnson a proper talent evaluator? And Zach Randolph? Really?

My reaction exactly.

“It’s too bad the Wizards can’t draft Blake Griffin, because they need a point guard.”

Also, I can’t imagine Brendan Haywood is too happy with this: “It means no Hasheem Thabeet, who could have been the defensive anchor the Wizards have been missing for years.”

more proof that

Wilbon gets his Wiz updates from his interns (who are probably Cavs fans anyway).

by Pryme on May 20, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I am in that camp

That says that Gilbert isn’t the kind of point you can win a title with. I would love to see a true point guard (the man who can conduct the orchestra and scoring is secondary) with Gilbert. Granted Gilbert showed something different at the end of the season but I am not sure that is something that will continue. Gilbert is a more natural two to me (although you worry about his defending at that position) and it never hurts to have two capable ballhandlers on the floor.

I Don't Get All of the James Harden Love

Yes, we could use a really good SG, but James Harden is not it. The dude can’t even compete against the elite at the college level, what do you expect him to do in the NBA? The Tournament exposed the guy as a sham. He’s a poor man’s DeShawn Stevenson. No thank you, we already have the rich man’s version coming back healthy next season.

If we are going to keep the pick, I like Prada’s idea of trading down and taking DeJuan Blair. The man is a big physical specimen who would bring much needed strength and toughness to the low post that our team lacks. He’s a bit short at 6-7, but has a 7-3 wingspan to help make up for it. He doesn’t get backed down or pushed around, and cleans up the glass on both offense and defense. He’s the kind of guy we need.

Otherwise package the pick with one of our young prospects and an expiring contract or two to get a veteran tough guy who is a bit taller. Either way, we need to address the low post this off-season or we will have no chance to compete against the top 3 teams in this league, or even the Atlanta Hawks for that matter (I swear, if ZaZa gets another 15+ rebounds against us next season I’m going to throw my chair through my 46" LCD).

Yes, I do realize that we have Brendan Haywood, but he is just one player and he sits on the bench for at least 20 minutes a game. Every other “big” we have is thinner than a Somalian and is about as tough as a wet noodle.

I don't see any team looking to rebuild like the Sonics were that has a great veteran near 30

Maybe the Hornets, but they don’t have anyone we would want or could get (would we want Tyson Chandler?). Vince Carter might be available, or we could throw caution to the wind and try to trade for Tracy McGrady. If he’s healthy next year and is playing next to Arenas, Jamison, and Butler (or even just next to Butler and Arenas), we’d be good. Then again, TMac actually being healthy would be such a slap in the face to God that it would probably result in the Verizon Center being sucked into hell.
