Trade for Tyson Chandler?
The Hornets obviously want to get rid of Tyson Chandler, evidenced by the fact they already tried to trade him for expiring contracts and scraps at the trade deadline. They just got murdered by the Nuggets, and will undoubtedly be looking to make some moves this off season.
Does the risk of his injury bring a big enough reward where we can afford to spend one of our expiring contracts in Etan Thomas along with Andray Blatche?
Something like this might work:
Etan Thomas
Andray Blatche
future 2nd rounder
for
Tyson Chandler
This lets NO shed Chandler's contract, while getting an expiring with at least a little immediate value in Etan, and a young prospect in Andray Blatche.
This gives us the defensive presence we need to back up Brendan, and another athletic guy for Gil to toss oops to (since we know he's good at getting up for those). When healthy, Chandler has proven he can hold down the middle, which was one of our biggest deficiencies last year.
The biggest risk is Tyson Chandler's lack of health the past season, and the last thing we want as Wiz fans is another guy in street clothes. Does an off season of rest help Chandler recover? Something for the doctors to determine.
The other risk is whether or not it is time to give up on Andray. He has shown brilliance at times, with some good athleticism and a decent feel for the game, but when is he going to step up and put in the work? No doubt, giving up on guys has killed us in the past, but how many opportunities do you give a guy until he shows you something?

We already have a cheaper Tyson Chandler
His name is Brendan Haywood.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

My thoughts
1. I wouldn’t want to rely on the Wizards medical staff to determine if Chandler was a good risk or not.
2. If you think Haywood and Thomas had issues, wait until Haywood thinks Chandler is taking away his minutes !
3. The Wizards have more glaring holes than Center – which should be adequately manned by Haywood/Blatche/McGee
4. uh………..NO

Well, I can't unequivocally get behind number three
But it’s certainly not a hole worth filling with a $10 million guy.

Yeah, I think we need a backup center, not a starting one
Someone like Varejao or even Kwame would make more sense as far as overall value. Brendan’s accident seems like a one and done type thing that won’t really affect his game, so it would be a waste to have another above-average center on the team just to warm the bench.

Well, Varejao's a starting center
And he’s better than Chandler.

And there is the slight problem
that Chandler and Haywood despise one another. Haywood was always amped to face Chandler when he played for the Bulls and there battles were very physical. Don’t want an explosive situation like that in Wizards locker room.

Personally
I just don’t know if I’m ready to live in a world where Brendan Haywood doesn’t hate a center on his own team.

Touche
But I am not sure the poet and Brendan hate each other as much as they used too.

hehe he might not hate Javale, but at least he has a reason to
it must have sucked to have spent this season on the benc—er, never mind.

I think the beauty of Brendan Haywood is his contract … and the amount of money he allows you to spend on other positions. So, I wouldn’t be interested in a player/contract like Tyson Chandler.
I would like another defensive orientated big man but he would either need to be a replacement for Jamison, or a midlevel contract or under type of player.
by NBR on May 1, 2009 8:06 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think Marcin Gortat would be a better acquisition for Washington — he can 85-90% of what Chandler can and will do it for 25% of the cost.
by NBR on May 1, 2009 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agree 100%
I’m annoyed that Gortat had such a big game the other night, because as soon as I came back to writing full-time, I was going to start the “sign Gortat for the MLE” bandwagon.

Trade to Portland
Trade butler or Jamison for outlaw and blake
wizards would get two great three point threats to spread the floor.

I'd actually been thinking about something like that
I’d like to see how Andray Blatche would do as a power forward. It’d be nice to have kind of a twin towers thing with him and Haywood/McGee, and Outlaw would add some length when he plays. I don’t know that Portland would go for it, although we’d have to throw in at least one more player in order to have enough roster spots. Plus, that would leave Portland without a point guard.

Outlaw's overrated
Dude’s a skinny jump shooter. That’s not terrible, but we don’t need another one of those.
Blake’s a nice player, though he doesn’t play great D.

He is not overrated
He is a skinny jump shooter….but a great great bench scorer, just don’t ask him to do anything else. And yes….Portland would trade Outlaw and Blake for Butler.

Okay, maybe not overrated
Since that all depends on one’s vantage point.
I’ll stick with “not very good” then.

Also
No reason for the Wizards to trade for Outlaw and Blake – There are several “not very good”, skinny jump shooters available in the draft….. and a plethora of slow, non-defense playing Point Guards.
So if they needed those kind of players, they could just draft them.

I'd want to get Joel Przbilla
He proved to be well worth his 7 footness this year.
Rebounds and blocks shots, and scrappy down low too.
Runs at the MLE, but after this past year, he might be too valuable for Portland to give up.

What do y'all think about Chris Anderson as a backup PF and occasional C?
If we don’t get Blake Griffin, could Anderson be an energetic rebounder and shot blocker off the bench? I haven’t seen him play, but his numbers are impressive in just 20.6 minutes:
6.2 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 54.8 percent shooter.
by antawnjameson on May 3, 2009 8:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Totally Agree
Ive watched him play and he seems to be a energetic guy to have come of the bench, Im all for it if it happens
by gilbachi on May 3, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He's a FA, isn't he?
I would like us to spend at least a portion of our MLE on a backup center, preferably someone like Marcin Gortat or the Birdman. It’s a small hole, but it’s a hole. Then, we can afford to send JaVale down to the D-League to get some real seasoning if need be.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Anderson would be the perfect energy guy off the bench
He straight up ignites the crowd when he comes in the game, and well deserved, because his blocks per 48 minutes are ridiculous.
Denver gave him a shot when he returned to the league, and their fans are in love with him, so I don’t know if we would be able to pry him away from them.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking
I would love to see the Birdman in a Wizards uniform, but I don’t think the Nuggets are going to let him fly away unless someone throws a lot of money his direction. I wouldn’t be shocked if they gave him full MLE.

How would people feel about Rasho Nesterovic?
He might be a little more affordable.

I'd give Rasho a look
I don’t know if he entirely earned that huge salary he tricked Minnesota(?) into giving him though….. maybe he can redeem himself with a veterans minimum.

Somewhere Stephen A. Smith is having a conniption.

I agree that Chandler is very steep
And guys like Gortat and Anderson would be better fits.
What I see in Chandler is a guy who
1) plays his role perfectly – a big defensive 5 who blocks tons of shots and gets boards
2) doesn’t try to be a superstar when guys like CP and West are the offensive weapons
3) plays D very well
4) and plays D
The main knock on him is his (huge) contract, and I agree that we should be able to get a center for cheaper than him. But with those guys at such a high commodity in the league, it is often worth it to swallow the money if the impact is there.
On a championship team, you need guys who can anchor your defense in a big way, and we just aren’t getting that from Blatche right now. I still have hope that he can get back to the basics, because this past year we did need guys to step out of their comfort zones with Gil and Brendan out. His contract also gives us the luxury of giving him another shot this year.
My main point was, if it makes us immediately better on defense, while filling a huge hole, is it worth it to sacrifice him now or give him another shot while also giving up the chance to sell high?

Again, Tyson's too expensive
The problem isn’t getting a starter-quality center, it’s getting a backup. Haywood’s better than Chandler and he’s half as expensive.
If Tyson could be had for $4 million, sure. Not at $10 million, and not when we have to trade something to get him.
Jake threw out Rasho Nesterovic. I like that idea. Spend 2-3 million on him to be a backup.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Tyson will make $11 million not ten.
I’m a Hornet’s fan and I suppose I should shut up and let you guys add to whatever movement there might be for the Wizards to trade for Tyson Chandler.
Somewhere above someone said:

Well, I’m sorry, Chandler only gets blocks when he plays weak side help defense. He decidedly does not play D well if you’re talking about man-on-man. He gets man handled instead. I’ve been following Tyson since he was in high school and he still has the same weak frame/game.
Please trade us Andre Blatche. With his raw talent maybe all he needs is a change of scenery. Don’t you know that Chris Paul would find Blatche for even more alley-oops than he does with Chandler? Hell, Paul finds Sean Marks for oops!

Yep
All Blatche needs is a change of scenery and he’s an all-star! With that said, we’ll take D West off your hands and send Etan to make the money work. Since Scott won’t play Julian Wright we’ll swap him for sweet shooting Oleksyi Pecherov! A steal for Nola.

Another Hornets fan
Hey guys, there is no way they make this deal. The Hornets do like Chandler, but they tried to shed his contract in a short term money deal. It isn’t that htey don’t like Chandler, its that they don’t like the luxury tax, and this move doesn’t fx their problem. They are in a luxury tax bind for this year and the next and then they have 20 coming off og the books and htey are fine.
by jdpourciau on May 8, 2009 6:59 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
I think that as far as fitting into each team’s system, Chandler is more valuable to you guys than he’d be to pretty much any other team with the possible exception of the Knicks. Plus, we’ve already got a decent center who’s been playing in DC since the Jordan era, so he already has good chemistry with everyone on the team.
