Why Not Steve Nash?

Going under the assumption that:

1.We are not committed to the young guys

2. We need more veterans

3. We want to win right now

Why not make a run at Steve Nash? Trade the two expirings, the rights to someone like Rubio and another first rounder.Rubio allows them to get a Nash like player 10 years younger and helps their terminally cheap owner shed more payroll. It also allows them to build around Amare. Nash would make us instantly competitive for two years, it would be fun to watch, and Gil might actually move to SG and defer to someone he would more or less consider his equal. Crazy enough to work, or just crazy?

Who plays defense?

And that’s way too much to give up for Nash. Wayyyy too much. I wouldn’t trade Rubio for him straight up. We could just sign Nash this offseason if Phoenix lets him go (his contract is non-guaranteed).

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

I second this......

And I wouldn’t say that we’re not committed to the young guys…..Grunfeld’s plan still seems to involve having solid kids, and develop them slowly, while remaining competitive with vets.

but would you do that?

My premise would be that no one plays defense, much like the Phoenix teams. Without the suspensions, those teams may have won it. I am fairly certain that a team with the Big 3 (+1) and Nash would run the Celtics into the ground. My other assumption is that we are in full on playing for right now mode – Rubio MIGHT be great 2-3 years from now, but Jamison will then be well past his prime and Butler might be out the door….

Again its a crazy scenario, but I like to think of it as a slightly more effective late Rockets Hakeem/Barkley/Drexler team……

Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!

If Nash will sign here for the mid-level

Then sure, why not? I doubt he will, but who better to back up Arenas?

Would be fun to see

I love Nash, but he's too much of a defensive liability for a team like us

Nash might be the worst perimeter defender in the league, and it’s not like the other guys would be able to compensate for his shortcomings. I think he’d be a good fit on the Lakers if he wants to go to a contender, maybe even the 76ers, but not the Wizards.

Just crazy

A starting lineup of Nash, Arenas, Butler, Jamison, and Haywood looks cool. It would also probably be the worst defensive lineup ever assembled.

im thinking that squad would give up 130 points on a nightly basis.

What about #2/Rubio and salary for Amare Stoudamire Phoenix’s first rounder?

no

if you think jamison is a bad defender, wait till you see amare

by joshp on Apr 15, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

fouls

Part of the problem was that he’d turn into a matador as soon as he had 2 fouls. With Shaq in the middle he picked up fewer and played better defense.

At the same time, Amare has the tools to be a good defender

No matter how hard Jamison tries, he can’t even be as good as Songaila, since he’s not particularly big. Amare’s still one the most athletic players in the league, and he has good size for a power forward. I think that with coaching and peer pressure, he could be at least passable.

I'm not even worried about his defense

I’m worried about Nash’s back. He has to lie down on the court everytime he gets taken out of the game. Remember the last time Washington got a 30+ year old point guard with injury concerns?

Ain't gonna and don't want it to happen

Steve Kerr basically said he’s not getting rid of Nash.

Plus, he’s past his prime, and we’d have to give up too much to get an aging veteran past his prime. Haven’t we done this in the past? Sounds too familiar…

Listen, I love Nash and the thought of him in a Zephyrs uni – He’s been one of my favorite players in the league for many years, but it’s not the right road to go down at this point.

Agreed

Let’s forget the old Nash, and just draft the next Nash (Rubio).

Yeah

Rubio for Nash reeks of Mitch Richmond for Chris Webber.

by pantslessyoda1 on Apr 15, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

It's worse than that, really

It’s like trading the rights to Penny Hardaway for the 1993 version of Isiah Thomas.

Nash is a good but not great player at this stage:

The Suns are already talking about reducing his minutes. I would not like the move for the Wizards.
