Thought's on Ty Lawson

Wonder what people here think about Ty Lawson't chances of being successful in the NBA  wether he commits to his decleration or finishes his senior year at UNC and declares again. He really was the soul of that team this year next to Tyler. They were an incredible combo. Eventhough he is sort of on the fence about entering the consesus is that he will most likely enter after opting out of the 2008 draft. I feel he should go and test the waters after winning a championship and gaining valuable experience but he still has things to work on such his perimeter game and jumpers but he's a nice slasher. I feel that this time he will be more confident to enter the NBA and after finishing a great season why shouldn't he despite some flaws? I feel he's more ready now than he will ever be. What's your guy's thoughts on whether he should stay or not and could he possibly be a nice fit for the Wizards? I think another hometown guy who has upside would be nice to add but I am not completely sold on his game yet. Although his Clinton, MD roots are cool because I hail from around the same area. It's said that he could be picked with the 10th selection and some team's that could select him are Utah, Portland, Philly, LA Lakers, and the Nets. Any where else?

If he declares, he's in

Since he declared last year and pulled out. He can’t just “test the waters.”

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

my mistake

I didn’t specify that Ty is still undecided and hasn’t hired an agent so he can take his time with the decision. He has until June 16. By “testing the waters” I mean that he can workout for NBA teams and get a feel for what teams like him and what they think about how his game will translate to their league. I have a feeling he will most likely go this time but we’ll just have to wait and see.

That so cool

I live in Clinton, MD

used to live in Clinton

til I moved north to Bowie. If Lawson comes out, the PG County NBA star team will definitely be a powerhouse. Roy Hibbert, Jeff Green, Kevin Durrant, Michael Beasley, Delonte West, Jarrett Jack, and Lawson. I think Rajon Rondo went to Dematha, so he might qualify as well.
That said, I don’t think Lawson can improve his stock by going back to school. Just gives critics more ammunition to pick at his game. I think he’ll do fine in the NBA.

Thats a lot of good players

Theres also tons of players from the D.C. and Baltimore areas that you could include like, Carmelo Anthony, Rudy Gay, or even Roger Mason. This area has had to produce the most good NBA players other than the LA area. I also think Lawson will do fine so that should just add another.

Rondo never went to Dematha. He started out in Kentucky and then transferred to Oak Hill Academy for his Senior Year. Oak Hill is in VA, but no where near DC.

Thanks for the correction

Oak Hill is nowhere near anywhere!
I’m not sure who I was thinking of from Dematha.

I think he'll be good

He’s quick, he’s improved his shot and his floater in the lane, and he plays pretty good/decent defense. I’m not sure how the Wizards would get him, but he should be a solid pro.

I could easily see us trading down and picking him up

I’m guessing he’ll go somewhere in the late lottery, so we’d most likely have to deal with someone like Phoenix, Indiana, or Charlotte.

Mike James + the number 3 pick + a second rounder for someone like Felton (via a sign and trade) and the Bobcats’ pick might work, and maybe then we could either keep Felton and Lawson or else trade Felton to the Blazers for Fernandez and Batum or something.

Funny that Lawson is being compared to a Raymond Felton.

Lawson

I had a feeling that Ernie was up for taking Lawson had he stayed in the draft last year. Pretty sure some media pegged him to us during the process too. Ernie just couldn’t promise him in case Hibbert was there. Without Hibbert or Lawson, Ernie defaulted to “long-tall skills mode” and drafted McGee.

Then he went and added a similar player in the Dee Williams and I was convinced. Similar to DW the defensive end is going to make or break him. He has the package offensively. Its not a beautiful pure jumper but its efficient and he has really improved it. he also has a step back or fade-away he uses to get his shots over bigger players if he is cut off from the basket.

If he can defend well enough then the next question is durability. He has had minor issues throughout his career and that was within a 40 game schedule. When he is healthy is the fastest player I’ve seen in awhile, and strong. He took his time at UNC and didn’t force things. I think he could be even better in the NBA with more freedom to attack and not always playing through the post.

The man is going to be a great NBA player

He is super fast and reminds me of fellow UNC guard now on the Bobcats, Raymond Felton. I think a team like Portland would benefit from Lawson. I love what Steve Blake is doing there now cause he is my boy from my school (Maryland), but adding Felton to that squad would make the most dangerous young squad in the West.

That is a scary line-up. Felton, Roy, Oden, Fernadez with one of the many guys coming off that very deep bench.

You have to hate losing more than you love winning.

Actually Portland is already pretty scary..

Nope, not Rajon Rondo

But Keith Bogans went to Dematha so I guess he still counts. I don’t even know who he plays for anymore.
