Gilbert Arenas.

Megastar athlete, one-time blogger, Halo aficionado.  A man barely alive.

Gilbertcleary_medium

Gentlemen, we can rebuild him.  We have the technology.

Ph2008091703766_medium

We have the capability to make the world's first bionic man.  Gilbert Arenas will be that man.  Better than he was before.

Better, stronger, faster.

This is an open thread, so if you're still having problems trying to remind yourself what Gilbert Arenas used to be like, talk about it here.

Despite all the worries about Gilbert’s health, the difficult year our team has had, and all the discussion about whether Gil should even play this season, I am INSANELY EXCITED to see Gilbert play tonight. I know he might not be the same buzzer-beating, phenomenal-swagging player right away, but I have missed watching him play so so much; I can’t wait to just see him on the court tonight.

Me too-

I don’t care if he only plays 5 minutes, I just want him back on court. It would be great if Caron plays tonight so we have our big three.

Well, considering he'll like play between 25 and 30 minutes...

I’m guessing he gets…19, along with maybe six assists, at least one of which will be an alley-oop. I’m guessing that he hooks up with Nick Young for something tonight, too; I got the impression last year that they had good chemistry.

I just got my game notes from the wiz and they don’t have Gilbert in the starting lineup. They have been wrong before but I hope to hell that doesn’t mean anything.

The ones you mentioned are the ones we're building around

That said, most of the fans really like Dominic McGuire. He’s not someone you build around, obviously, but he’s about as good a complimentary player as we’ve had in a while. Pretty much everyone else is generally considered semi-expendable, although Jamison is still really respected, and Nick Young and Javaris Crittenton have shown a lot of potential.

There's talk on at least two SBNation sites about Washington selling their pic,

Is this just greedy speculation by outside fanbases, or is there any room for that possibility?

They wouldn't sell it, but they could conceivably trade it

The team is very much against breaking the luxury tax, but not so much that they’d sell the pick, or even get rid of it in a lopsided deal a la Kwame for Gasol. At least on Bullets Forever, the general consensus is that if we trade it, it should be for a swingman. Jason Richardson is the player we seem to talk about the most.

I mean, he's been "active"

which is more than I can say about the usual Blatche…and is what he’s been doing more of lately.

Not really

I wouldn’t mind seeing him start, but most people are against it. He’s been playing well lately, but most of this year and all of last year, he was just a guy who would come in and take 18 footers off the dribble, not bother playing defense, and rarely get assists or rebounds. I think that the only way we’d get rid of Butler would be if we could get a decent small forward in return, someone of the same caliber as, say, Gerald Wallace, Travis Outlaw, or Marvin Williams.

He can shoot it if he’s wiiiiiiide open, but he should otherwise just make the extra pass or try to drive in and draw a foul.

Pretty crazy how high of a scoring game this is

It used to be unheard of for Detroit to give up this many points.

I think that shows how valuable Flip Saunders is as a coach.

We should take a long look at him this off season, he has had nothing but success in his career as a defensive coach. He’d probably have something to prove after being bounced from Detroit too.

I would not be opposed to Flip Saunders.

He’s also at least passing familiar with our team from training camp.

And he was Garnett's coach in the mid-90's

So he probably knows a thing or two about developing players, or at least isn’t completely opposed to it.

by pantslessyoda1 on Mar 28, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

He had Garnett in Minn. and recent champions in Detroit.

The Wiz need their coach to be the team enforcer. Someone who can get the young guys to prepare better and the veterans to play defense. If the Wizards are going to be successful in the playoffs, they need a coach who will change the culture. Avery Johnson did that in Dallas. Much as it scares me to agree with Wilbon, I like Johnson for the next coach.

by antawnjameson on Mar 28, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I just can't get sold on Avery.

I like his attitude – he’s a good coach, and the hardliner we need. But, we are built to run – look at all of our big men – and Avery slowed Dallas waaaaay down.

I’m not saying it wouldn’t work, I’m just not sure he fits.

Not to pile on....

..but who has Avery developed? He took a good team and made them great, not really developed on.

Avery developed Devin Harris!!!

or so he says

by hibachi on Mar 28, 2009 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

This is a good team, when healthy.

I’ll have to do some research and write an (even) longer post, but my impression is that he helped the Dallas’ best player, Dirk, who was regarded as just a scorer, become more well-rounded. He trusted a young Devin Harris to start and run the offense in the playoffs. He got solid play at center from inconsistent big men. He got accomplished veterans, Jason Terry and Jerry Stackhouse, to accept coming off the bench.

He has a ring as a player and would have had one as a coach in ‘06 if the refs hadn’t intervened. He’s an old-school guy, but he’s young enough that he was still playing during Gilbert’s first three years in the league. I think he’d tell Gilbert, “Here’s what you need to do to win a championship.” And Gilbert might actually listen.

Can I just say

I love, love, love Nick Young’s line right now. Not necessarily the 2-5 shooting, but five free throws at halftime is exactly where I think he needs to take his game.

Also, I think we can all expect Detroit to not sustain that .833 three-point average.

They couldn’t really ask him to play the entire fourth quarter. I’m guessing they put him back in around the 6 minute mark so we can make one last push.

Very hard year for the Wizards

Great game from Gil but they lose James in practice. But does James come back next year with a healthy Arenas? Memphis on Wednesday should be a gimme if Arenas plays as scheduled.

First of all, definite foul.

Second of all, hell of a lot more fun watching this team. I liked this loss a hell of a lot more than that win against Charlotte, and not because of any lottery-ball calculations.

Minutes Watch

Jamison played 42 and a half minutes
Taser played a little under 40 minutes
Butler played 35 minutes
Blatche played a little over 33 and a half minutes
Gilbert Arenas played 29 and a half minutes
NY played a little over 23 and a half minutes
Crittenton played 18 and a half minutes
McGee played 17 and a half minutes

by Jon L on Mar 28, 2009 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

This was the most exciting game of the past two years

Wow, that felt good, thats the whole season worth of excitement packed into 48 minutes. Cant wait til the Cavs come to town, even without Gil we play them close

Glad to see him back on the court. I didn’t expect him to get 29 minutes though.
