This is probably going to come as bad news to most of you, but I have a really good feeling that the Wizards won't be losing to the Kings tonight.  Sure, a loss would help the Wizards get more ping-pong ball that would help their chances of getting Blake Griffin, but I think there are just too many factors working against us tonight.

Consider the following:

  1. The Kings are coming off an overtime loss to the Cavaliers on Friday night.
  2. The Kings had to fly all the way across the country yesterday to get here after a crushing loss in which players logged more minutes than they normally do.
  3. The Wizards this season have traditionally played well in losses against good teams before breaking through with a wins against a bad teams.  Friday's close loss to Orlando would fit the billing of part 1 of that cycle.
  4. Donté Greene and Bobby Jackson aren't going through some issues at the moment.

Of course, I'm also wrong about most of these things, so take that for what it's worth.

Everything else you need to know about tonight's game can be explained by this video:

This is an open thread, so discuss whether or not you think Jimmy Walker is the "Dr. J of love" here.

GO WIZARDS!

Caron's starting tonight?

Last I heard, he was still nursing the hammy? Anyone know something I don’t?

I have to tell you

I really disagree with this:

This is probably going to come as bad news to most of you, but I have a really good feeling that the Wizards won’t be losing to the Kings tonight.

Why? Why not? I’m a Kings fan. It’s impossible for me to continue being a fan unless I believe the team has a shot to win a game every time out. I believe that this team has a chance to win any given Sunday night they go out there.

Besides, maybe this team will win because they’re due? Who knows. Should be interesting that much I know. And, umm, Bobby Jackson isn’t playing due to the fractured cheek he suffered against Cleveland Friday Night.

Umm, and, because I try to believe in good sportsmanship, good luck to you all. You’re going to need it baby! (Who am I kidding?)

Can I just say

that this is exactly how I want to see the Wizards play every game? I know that Sacramento’s defense isn’t exactly elite, but the style we’re playing – running up the floor, going to Blatche and Jamison in the half court, and taking advantage of our combination of athletic players and big men who can pass in order to run every chance we get – is what this team is built for.

Oh, and Andray getting a goal-tending call is a good thing. Yeah, it’s technically a penalty, but at least it means he’s contesting shots.

Can’t say much more since I’m heading out to dinner, but if the game continues at this pace and style, I’ll be really happy when I get home.

Why does he insist on taking the most difficult of shots?

Nice to see a winning effort for once

Even though this will hurt the Wizards’ draft standing, it’s nice to get a win once in a while, even if it’s against another struggling team. With 4 min. left, it looks like they can hang onto the lead. It’s not like they’re playing Cleveland or Boston here.

Surprising to see Jamison get a technical foul. With this late lead, maybe they should put Pecherov in there and tell him to keep passing. They need to get him at least ONE assist this year. And then they have to beat Charlotte. As bad as this season has been, it will be much worse if Pecherov goes the entire season without an assist and the Wizards set a new record by not winning a single division game.

Not sure what the problem is.

NY played 24 minutes, including a lot of crucial 4th quarter minutes and the last play of the game. Taps let him play through some pretty bad mistakes including a series of turnovers after his two made threes. Then NY makes what Taps considers a defensive mistake on the toe-on-the-line Sacto two pointer and he leaves NY in to play D on the last play of the game as well.

Seems like Taps did exactly what you wanted him to do, let NY play despite some mistakes.

by MR on Mar 15, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions

We know what your stance is on this issue MR,

I only wanted to bring attention to the quote. Lets wait till Tuesday night before we make any judgments about what effect this will have on his playing time.

by hibachi on Mar 16, 2009 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Precisely

Tuesday is when Nick will feel the heat from Taps…. look for him to garner 12 minutes or so of garbage time…. (ie: 3 minutes in the 2nd quarter; 9 minutes in the 4th, after the Wizards are out of it)

That “series” of turnovers were on consecutive drives to the basket, where he tried to pass the ball off to Blatche in traffic.

Taps left Nick Young in last night because he hit 2 of his first 3 shots; not because he was letting him “develop”…..

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

I was thrilled to see NY hit those two 3s. He was literally bouncing down the court after that, which is a nice thing to see. He has a smile that I think energizes the team and the hometown crowd when he plays well.

I thought he started forcing things after that. I liked the penetrate and dish sentiment from him, but it seemed like he had made up his mind before the play even started and threw the ball into a crowd twice. Then he passed on another open 3, which I thought he should have shot. I DO like that he was trying to get into the team offensive flow. And I’m glad Taps didn’t yank him for trying something new even though didn’t work.

I’m not sure that NY’s minutes on the upcoming trip are really a litmus test. He’s likely to get more minutes since there are two back-to-backs and Butler might be limited or out.

Funny thing is....

Everyone is talking about Nick Young’s “mistake”, collapsing in the lane to allow Garcia a look at a wide open 3….

Go back and look at the recording of the game…. on the EXACT SAME PLAY, Jamison was guarding Nocioni, and collapsed into the lane to help on Udrih, leaving Nocioni wide open at the 3-point line….

Had Udrih passed out to Nocioni (a better 3-point shooter than Garcia), the Wizards Coaching staff would be completely silent on the issue ………. AND, I’ll guarantee that IF we hear ANYTHING about that play from Tapscott, it will all be about Nick Young (or a “young player” making a mistake)… and nothing about Jamison (or a "veteran") making the exact same mistake.

I keep getting back to the coaching on this kind of play. The ONLY Wizard that didn’t collapse into the lane when Udrih penetrated was McGuire – he stuck by Kevin Martin in the corner.

Everyone else collapsed, “protecting the paint”…. The mantra we’ve heard for the last 3 years. The defensive style that has been infused into these players for the last 3 years…. An almost religious psalm, intoned by the coaches: “protect the paint”…..“protect the paint”… “protect the paint”…. over and over again in practice, until it becomes automatic.

And THAT’s why the Wizards give up so many open 3-point shots….. even when there’s 4 seconds left in the game, and they’re up by three, and the only way they can lose is by giving up an open 3-pointer – the Wizards players are still instinctively “protecting the paint”.
