Ivan Carter Is Leaving Us
Breaking news from Dan Steinberg and the DC Sports Bog:
Wiz beat reporter, Ivan Carter, is getting out of the newspaper biz and into the television biz, but will still be local, landing a gig with Comcast Sports Net.
Let Bullets Forever be some of the first to say congrats to Ivan and wish him well. Overall, he really provided us with top notch coverage of our Wiz.
Michael Lee will be covering the beat for the rest of the season.

Just saw this a few minutes ago
I’m very surprised. He was great at covering the Wizards, but I guess he’s worried about the newspaper industry. Sad stuff.
Or maybe he just wanted to be on TV
He was a ham for the camera.

Yeah I'm not all that surprised by this
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

I think the Post should let the young guns write more. We need to get them some print time, give them some experience and see what we have for next year.
Does the Post have a chance to make the playoffs?

Too bad
I wondered how long the Post would keep, in essence, two Wizards writers. While I’ve criticized some of his opinions/reporting in the past, I’ve always had respect for Ivan’s reporting skills. I hope the new gig goes well.
Michael Lee was more a general NBA writer....
but who knows if they’ll still be able to afford two……but the Post is the 7th most circulated newspaper in the U.S., so I imagine that they’ll continue having someone cover the sport and someone else cover the local team.

Ugh.
I like Ivan Carter as a beat reporter 1000 times more than Michael Lee.
But what happened to Russ Thaler? I like him too.
I disagree
Ivan notoriously had his favorites, and wrote his stories from that vantage point time and again, beating the drum against players he didn’t like, and never raising legitimate negative points about the players and coaches he did like. Lee does not seem to have close relationships with the Wizards organization, so he can (at least initially) be more objective. At a minimum, we’ll see a different perspective and hopefully different information than what we’ve been reading over the past couple of years.
The new position is a better fit for Ivan. A beat writer needs to present as much raw information as possible, but Ivan always seemed to editorialize, take a position, and hold back information. That’s more appropriate now that he’s on TV.
Those are pretty fair points. I don’t have a problem with writers having a perspective and being upfront about it. That’s one of the many virtues of the writing on blogs.
My main beef with Lee is that he appears to either dislike the Wizards or be completely indifferent to them. Lee always seems annoyed during the chats when fans ask about the Wizards and not the NBA in general. He doesn’t seem to be a beat writer, he seems to fancy himself a Wilbon-lite, writing opinion pieces on the NBA at large. He also falls in love with his attempts at writing funny captions.
You are right about a new perspective, though. And I agree that Ivan might be more cut out for his new role. I’m just worried about the one he’s leaving behind.
From the sounds of it
Lee sounds like he’s only there as the Wiz writer temporarily.

That's the saddest thing to me
I actually worked with Russ, and he was just great, wonderful guy. I think he’s still there, but I really liked him as the WPL host.

Comcast knows what its doing
They are trying to drive up the women from 25-54 demo by hiring Ivan Carter.
I enjoyed his writing and the work he and Michael Lee did on the NBA.
