Etan Thomas Due a $2 Million Kicker if Traded?
According to the Chicago Sun-Times:
Contrary to reports elsewhere, the Bulls have no interest in taking back Washington center Etan Thomas in a trade for Larry Hughes. The Bulls like Thomas - just not the extra $2 million kicker to the $7 million annual salary he is due by contract if traded. Guard Mike James ($6 million per season) also was rumored to be in the Wizards' package for Hughes, who is due $13.5 million next season.
What is this "kicker" that is being referred to? This is the first time I have read about this. Can someone please explain to me what this means?
This is probably why we can't unload Etan despite his expiring contract. Ernie is starting to look a lot less smart than I previously gave him credit for.
This represents the view of the user who wrote the FanPost, and not the entire Bullets Forever community. We're a place of many opinions, not just one.

Yeah, this is awful.
Etan’s salary goes up by 15% (I think that’s the number) if we trade him. It was written into his deal when we matched the Bucks’ offer. signing Etan was Ernie’s biggest blunder,

15% trade kicker
That was put in by the Bucks as a “poison pill”. They really wanted Thomas at the time, and though they could make sure Washington wouldn’t match the offer by putting in that trade kicker.
Washington could always send Thomas, James + $2 Million in cash for Hughes…. There’s no limitations in adding cash to a deal.

The problem is Chicago doesn't want to go over the luxury tax
And Etan would force them too.

Ditto
I know it’s been discussed before, but easily forgotten.

Damn!
That really hurts. Well I doubt Etan’s trade kicker will be as famous as Matt Geiger’s.

The Etan contract was an Abe thing
Ernie wanted to let Etan leave.

I remember this discussion coming up before
I don’t remember exactly the turn of events, but I know Abe wanted Ernie to re-sign Etan, so Ernie took as long as he possibly could to match Milwaukee’s offer in order to spite Abe.
Again, someone with a better memory can fill me in.

Yea, I can't blame Ernie for this either.....
I don’t recall ever knowing about the Abe thing, but I do recall it being a very tough big man market back then, and essentially so the Wizards wouldn’t be left with some huge holes, they had to pay above market price to retain Etan.
Of course, we figured he’d be better, and without the bad ticker…..sure, the contract is a tough pill to swallow, but I still can’t come down to hard on Gruns for it…..the Pollin thing notwithstanding, which of course, sways non-culpability in Ernie’s direction even more.

This whole trade kicker thing doesn't mean Thomas is untradable...
According to NBA Salary Cap FAQ
http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm
“For the salary cap, the value of a trade bonus is applied to the team salary among the remaining years of the contract (excluding non-guaranteed years — see question number 91, and years following an Option or ETO — see question number 50), in proportion to the percentage of salary in each of those seasons that is guaranteed.”
“the trade bonus is limited to 15% of the remaining value of the contract, the actual value of the bonus varies from year to year, as follows the bonus pro-rates during the season”
So – let’s take the proposed Larry Hughes trade for example:
Thomas makes $6,860,000 this year and $7,350,000 next year
15% trade kicker for this year (assuming 1/2 year) would be approx $514,000
and the 15% for next year would be $1,102,500
If the Wizards trade James + Thomas for Hughes & Michael Ruffin, the salaries still work, but the Chicago Bulls stay under the Luxury Tax this year… and can easily stay under next year if they release Lindsay Hunter (who is not in their plans anyway). The Wizards would take on an additional $500K in salary this year, but according to HoopsHype, they would still be under the Tax ($71.1 Million).
Bottom line is that the Wizards simply need to take back more salary to make any deal work that includes Thomas’ salary.

Wait a minute
We’d have to take back Michael Ruffin?
I won’t even know where to begin.

LOL
Yeah – Chicago might go for the deal even WITHOUT our 2nd round pick, if they can include Ruffin in the deal.
I can imagine Tapscott drooling over the prospect of another 6’9" PF that can’t jump playing Center for the Wiz.

Relax
We’d have to take back Michael Ruffin?
I won’t even know where to begin.
Eddie Jordan got fired, remember? And Tap will be gone at the end of the season. So we don’t have to worry about Ruffin playing 30 MPG.

So How Does That Work?
Bottom line is that the Wizards simply need to take back more salary to make any deal work that includes Thomas’ salary.
Yet the Wizards desperately need to shed salary. If dumping Etan and James doesn’t result in a lower team salary, then I doubt Ernie will do it.
