Funny but

The guy has really helped to lift this Wizards team; he might very well be MVP after AJ

by GvP on Dec 2, 2009 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

MVP MVP MVP

I wasn’t being funny- he’s a player- he’s playing to win. BH and AJ are right there with him. Especially BH- he must have set a dozen picks for EB in the the 4th !!!!!

by DCPerspective on Dec 2, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

I was fortunate enough

To be there live for both that game and the Utah game.

It is a bit disheartening that Gil hasn’t gotten his insane clutchness back … yet at least.

by Manimal Smith on Dec 2, 2009 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

Arenas has played in the 4th quarter of the last couple of games.

What’s really inspiring to me though is how flexible Saunders has been with his rotations, playing down the stretch whomever is playing most effectively. The team seems to be buying into it as well. Whatever happened to Flip and his rigid 8 man rotations?? He seems to be doing it differently in Was.

by Johnnie Futbol on Dec 2, 2009 9:54 PM EST up reply actions

oops...

meant to say Arenas has played WELL in the 4th quarter of the last couple games. He’s played great. It’s not necessary for him to be the one who takes/nails the last second shot.

by Johnnie Futbol on Dec 2, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

Not necessary no

… but I think his clutchness is actually what made him special. Otherwise its somewhat hard to distinguish him from alot of other volume-shooter type players.

by Manimal Smith on Dec 2, 2009 9:57 PM EST up reply actions

The clutchness of the pre-injury Arenas isn’t back, and I hope to see it again too.

by Johnnie Futbol on Dec 2, 2009 10:00 PM EST up reply actions

He tended to be more efficient than most of them

That’s what distinguished him, not the buzzer beaters.

(Although part of the efficiency thing was his ability to hit threes AND drive to the hole for fouls, which he hasn’t gotten back yet).

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

If earl boykins turns over the ball or misses a shot on the last possession

are you saying the same thing? Your best player is supposed to have the ball on the last possession. Not Lou Williams and not Earl Boykins. Otherwise, what are you paying Gilbert $110 million for?

Until Gil gets close to pre injury form we are at best an average team. We are beating sub par teams when we encounter some real competition again we are going to get exposed.

Which in the ridiculously tough eastern conference

just makes us at best a 7th or 8th seed. When I look at the elite in the east I just dont see how the wiz can compete.

i can't disagree with that, given where they are now

and how they have looked overall. but there have been just enough flashes to make me think they could get significantly better. it is weird to say, but mike miller really takes this team to another level.

I want Gilbert to go into the huddle and say "Give me the ball".

I want him to be pissed for not taking that last shot. Remember the Bulls-Knicks playoff series in ‘94 when Jordan had retired for the first time Phil Jackson drew up a game winning play for Toni Kukoc instead of Pippen? Scottie was so pissed off he wouldn’t even come in the game. They won that game and people gave Scottie a lot of shit for it but it wouldn’t have bothered me. That’s the kind of guy I want on my team.

Yeah, I want Michael Jordan on my team too.

(the young one I mean)

But comparing Jordan during a playoff game and Arenas, 15 games into a season after a two-year long injury, is nuts.

ha

you’re talking about pippen! sorry.

by Johnnie Futbol on Dec 2, 2009 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

Jordan was "retired" so it was Pippen's team at the time.

It’s irrelevant if Gilbert isn’t as good as Jordan or Pippen. He’s our best player and he’s supposed to take that last shot.

by hibachi on Dec 2, 2009 10:46 PM EST up reply actions

You know, the play worked

I understand your frustration, but the bottom line is the team won, in both cases. If the team lost – then yeah, I’d be pissed. But if it works, I really can’t complain.

Besides the ending, Gil had a really excellent game.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Dec 2, 2009 11:36 PM EST up reply actions

He played well and really balanced the whole scoring/distributing thing, don't get me wrong.

I suppose I’m just frustrated his mentality… He talks about being the assassin and how he’s going to take over and that’s great. That’s part of what makes him Gilbert “Hibachi” Arenas. So when Flip Saunders says “Earl, run the high screen and roll” I want Gilbert to pull a Pippen and sit (On second thought, maybe I’d want him to express his frustration in a less destructive way).
I’m angry that he’s not angry.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laydODN6xVk

by hibachi on Dec 2, 2009 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not understanding your logic,

you say he talks about being the assassin; all I’ve heard him say this year is he lacks confidence and a rhythm. So you want him to be selfish enough to demand to run the last play, even though he knows he isn’t the best option right now, due to rust from a 2+ year absence? Why? How about we run plays with the highest chance of success and let Gilbert continue to knock the rust off. He has had back-to-back pretty postive games, let’s hope he keeps it up.

by ronoD nagrO on Dec 3, 2009 8:50 AM EST up reply actions

The best shot

Would it not be better to spread the floor with shooters of a timeout
instead of just driving to the hoop which can get predictable,
Look at the LeBron play against us in the playoffs two years back when
he dished it out to the open Delonte West.

by wuds100 on Dec 3, 2009 8:22 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah but....
instead of just driving to the hoop which can get predictable,

Isn’t that EXACTLY what LeBron did to get West open? He drove the middle, everyone collapsed, leaving a wide open shooter….

That’s exactly WHY you run a play designed to penetrate by driving to the hoop.

This is kind of silly, don't you think?

Should the Bucs have gone away from their hot hands Ridnour and Jennings just because they aren’t the highest paid players on the team?

It’s a team game. Calling a play for Boykins, the hot hand, was absolutely the right thing to do. If Arenas “demanded” the play it would have been a disaster from a team/personnel/locker room stand point. Why in the world would you want him to put himself over the team?

What Pippen did was inexcusable and forever cemented him in my mind as a selfish player.

Right now?

Yes, I am.

Come playoff time, probably not.

The main thing I’m saying is just that I’m happy Gilbert has put together a couple good games in a row after a fairly depressing slump. And I ‘d argue he’s played clutch basketball, performing strong in the 4th quarter both games.

From a long-term perspective, that’s more important than whether or not Gil took that last shot. From a short-term perspective, who cares… the Wizards won.

by Johnnie Futbol on Dec 2, 2009 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

I don't care about the 4th quarter performances and the wins.

Well, that’s a lie I do but I’m still concerned when our best player isn’t demanding the ball. I’m concerned when Gilbert sits out the whole 4th quarter to a guy on a non-guaranteed contract. That’s alarming. Could you imagine what would happen if Lebron were benched for a whole 4th quarter in a close game to J.J. Hickson? Don’t you think he would be livid? This is what bothers me the most. Maybe things were said behind the scenes between Gil and Flip, I don’t know. I’m still not happy that Earl Boykins has the ball in his hands the WHOLE 4th quarter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laydODN6xVk

by hibachi on Dec 2, 2009 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

but

LeBron hasn’t been out for two straight years. I thought Gilbert looked good tonight, but the acceleration and lift still isn’t there. Personally, I like that the Wizards are riding the hot hand rather then deferring to the supposed superstar. You saw nice distribution all game and I think unselfishness could go a long way to curing what ails this team.

Now they're 7-10

Toronto at home on Friday
Sun, @ Detroit
Boston at home
Indiana at home
Then a West Coast trip with some very winnable games against
@ LA Clippers
@ Sacramento
@ Golden State
@ Phoenix

That will be 25 games – let’s see where we are after that West Coast trip…..

Phoenix

We could pretty much win or lose all of those games. That’s the kind of team we have right now.

I’d like to say we are coming together, but our reliance on Earl doesn’t really speak to that.

by Manimal Smith on Dec 2, 2009 9:40 PM EST up reply actions

You are right..

but at least we’re not playing Cleveland twice, Miami three times, San Antonio, Dallas, Atlanta and Phoenix…. The Wizards have had one of the hardest schedules to start the year… with 9 road games, mostly against Playoff caliber teams….. and games against good teams.

Admittedly, they’ve lost some games against winnable foes (Indiana, Charlotte) – at least from now forward, for a few weeks we get to see if they can even their record… and perhaps win a few games and get some confidence.

by Sean Fagan on Dec 2, 2009 10:57 PM EST up reply actions

Our January schedule is not terrible either

While the competition is a littler tougher, we do play 11 out of 16 at home. If we can return from the west coast road trip at or near .500, with a littler swagger and Gil starting to look like the old gil, then I think we could be in a really good place by the end of January. Clearly, this assumes health, which always seems to be a terrible assumption

by Blatche4MVP on Dec 3, 2009 10:52 AM EST up reply actions

me too

I was aghast with Earl until he pulled that Haywood dunk out of thin air. Its almost like he knew that play was there.

by Manimal Smith on Dec 2, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

Gilbert was the Wizard's high scorer with 22

21 from Young and 15 from each of the other big three doesn’t hurt. I’m excited for Gilbert.. he doesn’t have it back yet, but he’s getting better, and more confident by the minute. I was probably wrong to suggest a benching.

by satchmore on Dec 2, 2009 9:41 PM EST reply actions

Random question .. but important one

What happened to Randy Foye and who is wearing his jersey out there?

by Manimal Smith on Dec 2, 2009 9:41 PM EST reply actions

My observations

1. Nick Young with another solid game defensively – AND 21 efficient points (7-12 shooting, 7-7 from the FT line), and 5 rebounds.

2. Wizards shot 54% from the field, and had 21 assists… They ran the Offense tonight. 7 players in double figures scoring.

3. Brendan Haywood and Jamison again dominated the defensive boards.

4. Gilbert with another “Chauncy-Like” game. 22 points (42%) and 9 assists… He made mostly mid-range shots tonight.

5. Brendan Haywood should get some consideration for All-Defensive team – holding Bogut to 8 points on 28% shooting.

And I’m serious about number 5. Brendan has shown that he is, if not an elite defender, he’s almost there. He held Chris Bosh to about 3 points when he was guarding him. Bogut shot terribly against Haywood – and Bogut is a very, very good Offensive player.

Every game we see great defensive plays by Haywood, huge blocks, tremendous rebounding, and wonderful help defense and rotations. He deserves some consideration for All-Defensive team….

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

by Rook6980 on Dec 2, 2009 9:52 PM EST reply actions

I agree completely

Especially about Haywood. If we go on a nice run, he might get some attention. My only critique really was Gil’s shot selection, since he didn’t get to the line much and he only hit one three. The mid range jumpers make him look good, but he’s got to hit over 50% of them to really help the team that much. Nick Young was great on offense, too, and I like how he takes a bit of pressure off of the big three. I just wish he could get back to running off of screens and catching and shooting.

by pantslessyoda1 on Dec 2, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

yea

Nick’s 21 points were huge, considering he was so efficient (58%)… because Jamison and Butler only scored 15 each

If Nick Young can continue to play good defense – he brings another scorer… so when one of the big-3 is off, he can pick up the slack on the Offensive end…. or like Yesterday, when he only scored 9 , while the big-3 scored over 70 – he can do other things (defense)…

Reading that Nick? You’re playing 30 minutes a night because you’re defending…..!!!!

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

by Rook6980 on Dec 2, 2009 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

Did they really run the offense?

I missed the first half working, but throughout the second half I just saw a series of pick and rolls. That is definitely AN offense, but was I missing that they were actually running Flip’s system?

by Manimal Smith on Dec 2, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

The PnR’s were all run out of various Hawk and other sets….

The first move on most of the plays was the standard Hawk cut, then Jamison curling back to set a screen for Gilbert…. Some of those plays, Gil had an open mid-range jumper – some others, they continued to run through the options with Haywood setting high screens at the top of the Key – getting Gil free for jumpers, etc…

BUT – everything started with one of Flip’s set plays.

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

by Rook6980 on Dec 2, 2009 10:03 PM EST up reply actions

But are they playing well?

I didn’t see it. They beat an average team without its best player at home by 2 points with a miss at the buzzer. They could be back down to 80 against the likes of Boston. Something is still not right.

by Izman on Dec 2, 2009 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

Something = Arenas, Butler, Foye

Caron isn’t there yet. Gilbert is not going to be himself for a while and maybe its just that Nick has been so good, but Foye has been non-existent.

Its a bit strange when you think that the biggest things about this season so far is actually the improvement of Blatche and the return of Haywood and not the return of Gilbert or the addition of Foye and Miller. Of course, I think many of us thought that Haywood’s return would be the most important factor.

by Manimal Smith on Dec 2, 2009 10:04 PM EST up reply actions

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with this Wizards team

that some Wins can’t fix….

They're not playing remotely as well as they're capable of..

and yet they still won. Those kind of wins make a difference later in the season. This isn’t their best win, but it’s an important one all the same.

milwaukee played a pretty gritty game

i don’t think the failure to rout toronto or milwaukee necessarily means we can’t beat the likes of boston, but it would be nice if we could put a team away… maybe that will be the sign of when we’ve turned the corner (if we ever do)

this was a good win.

I was actually really

heartened by the fact that we took a bunch of dagger threes for Ridnour et al and kept coming back. Earlier in the year we lie down after a few of those.

by Sean Fagan on Dec 2, 2009 10:45 PM EST up reply actions

They certainly need to play better

I agree, they’ve hardly turned a corner. But they’re getting there. And Milwaukee’s no slouch this year. Particularly on the second night of a back-to-back, their physical style can be really tough to deal with.

(Also, no way Redd is their best player. At best, he’s their third-best guy behind Bogut and Jennings. Bogut has some serious skills – that Haywood shut him down says a lot about Haywood’s defensive ability).

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

And in general . . .

The rebounding effort by the whole team. There were a lot of one and outs for Milwaukee in the 2nd half. It is so good to see the Wizards not get killed by second-chance points. Long may that continue!

Just happy to have been home in DC to see a good game!

Earl more than atoned for his rare missed FTs. And yes everyone where I was sitting (121 not far from Sen Kohl) was saying, “Earl, give up the ball!! Give up the ball!…” Heck, he knew the pick and roll was going to be there eventually, even if it took almost the whole clock to materialize. And he drew a nice foul on Jennings at the end, after Jennings had tied it with a clean 3.

Haywood fully neutralized Bogut.

Nice cameo from DeShawn. His awkward penetration and feed to Blatche in the mid-4th quarter was actually a critical play.

Gil and Caron are getting there, but it is not a happy thought when Caron gets played even up by Carlos Delfino (bet the Raptors wish they got him cheap on the boat back from Moscow instead of dumping a king’s ransom on Hedo).

NickY played well offensively and showed some D, but jeez who was supposed to be guarding Charley Bell and Luke Ridnour?

Antawn/Dray and Ilyasova/Warrick pretty much canceled each other out.

Foye has no game at all at this point.

At the end of the day, Mike got it right… Earl Boykins… was the difference.

Does Nick Young start when Mike Miller comes back?

Mike Miller definitely has been playing as good as anybody, but Young is putting up the numbers and we’re getting wins. PLUS Nick Young if developed right could be a big player for the Wizards in the future.

by DaGribb on Dec 3, 2009 1:18 AM EST reply actions

ALSO

With Mike Miller starting we have only been ahead in the first quarter 2 out of 9 times. (against the Nets and the lose to the Cavs) Nick Young has started 6 times and been ahead 4 times at the end of the first and the 2 games they were down were by 3 and 4.

by DaGribb on Dec 3, 2009 1:29 AM EST up reply actions
