I'm on my way out of work to the game (Section 104, if you're there), so no long preview.  I also apologize for the site going down - the SB Nation servers were having problems this afternoon that I think are fully resolved now.

Four quick points:

  • This is the last team you want to face on a back-to-back.  Milwaukee makes you work for everything and plays you incredibly physically.  They foul a lot, but when the game is on the line, the refs get tired of calling everything and usually swallow their whistle.  So, Gilbert Arenas, please don't drive just to look for contact.
  • Brandon Jennings is cooling off, but I'm still psyched to see him in person.
  • The engine of the Bucks is not Jennings, but Andrew Bogut.  He's quietly improved his game significantly.  He can score in the post with either hand if you don't double and is an excellent passer if you do.  He can run the pick-and-roll with Jennings, can step out and shoot and is the defensive lynchpin of the team.  Luckily, we have Brendan Haywood to slow him down.  Haywood's got to earn his money tonight.
  • Michael Redd will not play for the Bucks tonight.

That's all.  GO WIZARDS!

Thats one of the funniest videos

around pertaining to the NBA. Also I believe that jennings " cooling off " had alot to do with Bogut going out hurt Now Bogut is back and surprise they break there four game losing streak. Jennings is going to have a field day if Gil ends up guarding him. Hopefully Flip has better game plan. Maybe some NY?

wow

cant believe that NY is a defensive upgrade….but I agree, his length could really bother him

Young is quick....

but not even close to the same level as Jennings…. He would torch Nick….

He’s lightning quick, and has a wicked cross over move… He can get into the lane almost at will (very similar to Gil in that regard)… The biggest problem for defenders is that he’s been hitting his outside shots (50% of his 3-point shots), so you cannot just play off him to control his drive…He’ll burn you.

He’s not a very good finisher at the rim… but his drives are where he gets most of his assists.

So:
1 Contest his jump shot; especially behind the 3-point line.
2. If he drives, cover the passing lanes (don’t give help and collapse in to the lane).
3. Make him shoot over Haywood, Blatche, McGee and company.

So basically the Wizards need to

let him have his and focus on everyone else?

by bronco6778 on Dec 2, 2009 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

NO

Bogut can really hurt you too…. Let him drive, but make him shoot on his drives…. NO drive and kick to a wide-open shooter. NO drive and dump for a dunk. Don’t let him shoot the 3 uncontested.

Bogut and Jennings will be very difficult to guard on the Pick-and-roll, or pick-and-pop….. so the Wizards will need crisp rotations.. and the big men will have to show on the PnR and get back to their man quickly.

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

by Rook6980 on Dec 2, 2009 6:49 PM EST up reply actions

Both OKC and San Antonio did a good job of chasing Jennings off the 3-point line (3 shots and 2 shots respectively), and when he penetrated, they stayed with their assignments so Jennings couldn’t find any open shooters… He frequently got in the air in the lane and had to put up floaters, and off-balance jumpers ; which cut down on his effectiveness…. Another thing that OKC and SA did well, was they didn’t foul him… Like Gilbert Arenas, Jennings is at his best when he’s getting a lot of foul shots.

Orlando played him different, but just as effectively. They let him shoot outside (4-7 from three, 7-22 overall) but contested his drives…. and didn’t foul him (zero foul shots)… Jennings ended up with 18 points, but shot poorly, and only had 4 assists because Orlando played straight up Defense on their own men…..and Jennings couldn’t find anyone open.

On the other hand, Chicago played Jennings like Washington used to play these small, quick guards in the past under Eddie Jordan. They tried to double him….. went under the picks….. and collapsed in the lane when he drove… Jennings ended up with only 15 points but he had 8 assists, involved the rest of his teammates, and was 3-4 from three point land – and the Bucks won, even though Jennings only shot 5-15 from the field.

We have tp keep Gil on the floor but if Jennings starts torching him then we need to have a plan B.

by ccrun1800 on Dec 2, 2009 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll be watching that match-up if it happens…. Boykins is quick… but I think Jennings has the quickest first step in the League… It will be interesting…

Perhaps we’ll see Boykins on Jennings and Gilbert on Delfino…

It’s amazing how just a little bit of effort is all it takes for an athletic guy with decent size to get some boards. He seems to be passing a bit better, too. He’s still horrible at sticking with his man when he doesn’t have the ball, though.

by pantslessyoda1 on Dec 2, 2009 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe Young… instead of Boykins?

Or even McGuire at Shooting Guard?

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

by Rook6980 on Dec 2, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions

That's be ideal

I wouldn’t even mind keeping Blatche in to guard Warrick and shifting AJ to small forward. It’s not like the Bucks have anyone who could attack him off the dribble, and Caron’s length would help against Ridenour since he’s almost incapable of scoring in the paint.

by pantslessyoda1 on Dec 2, 2009 9:16 PM EST up reply actions

Nah, Ridnour would blow right by Caron

I think this lineup with Haywood is best for tonight.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

There you have it.

by satchmore on Dec 2, 2009 9:17 PM EST up reply actions

Referrering tonight has been absolutley god awful some of the worst officiating I have seen since the Wizards loss at the Cavs last Christmas.

If we lose which we wont, there is no doubt NOT EVEN MISSED free throws are our demise. Its clearly missed calls by the refs down the stretch that would change this game significantly.

by Unxpekted on Dec 2, 2009 9:16 PM EST reply actions

I can't understand the anti-Boykins sentiment on here

He’s been a great closer for the Wizards ever since he started playing with them. People fixate on his size, but it’s not so easy for opponents to post on him. I’m sure his +/- is well in the positive range, and he generally makes smart decisions late in the game.

by satchmore on Dec 2, 2009 9:20 PM EST reply actions

Well I was cursing him for all the dribbling on that possession

but then he got it to Haywood for the dunk!

I was questioning everyone’s sanity for a second and realized I was the one behind. Sad!

by Craig_ on Dec 2, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

I mean, he's fine

Playing much better than we all thought and great for the price we got him. But it’d be nice if someone better were trading off ball-handling with Gilbert like this.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Dec 2, 2009 9:21 PM EST up reply actions

Well, it’d be nice if we didn’t need someone trading off with Gilbert at all.

by satchmore on Dec 2, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

To me, it's more about people being over to shoot over him

Basically, when you’re being guarded by someone who’s a foot shorter than you, every jumper is an open one. But yeah, he’s been good closing games, even if his ball pounding makes AI look like Rip Hamilton.

by pantslessyoda1 on Dec 2, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions

Boykins too much dribbling

but nice pass

I disagree watching the game the calls have been too favored to Mil especially first qtr and charges

Doesnt matter were winning this baby!

Yeah

It’s disturbing to me that the 110 million dollar guy who’s one of the best closers in the league has been camped out in the corners while a guy who played in Italy last year is winning the game for us.

With the timeout

they can theortically get the rebound and still have just enough time to inbounds and shoot

Is Jim Zorn coaching the Wiz?

Game is over if he misses that free throw.

we would have run a stretch right on our last possession.

with the schedule getting easier

Toronto at home on Friday
Sun, @ Detroit
Boston at home
Indiana at home
Then a West Coast trip with some very winnable games against
@ LA Clippers
@ Sacramento
@ Golden State
@ Phoenix

That will be 25 games – let’s see where we are after that West Coast trip…..

Some very winnable games.

I just hope there’s no blackouts coming up.

by Craig_ on Dec 2, 2009 9:37 PM EST up reply actions

I think we'll win 4 or 5 of the 7

Boston will beat us and we’ll probably lose to the Suns (although I could see them hitting a rough patch, since they’ve overperformed so much this year), but all of the other games are probably at worst 50-50 as far as the chances of us winning.
