6-10!!

Improvement never comes easy.  The Wizards took more gradual steps tonight.  Namely:

This wasn't a perfect win, but it was a necessary one.  You have to win ugly on the road sometimes, even against a team like Toronto.  Credit the Wizards for hanging in there.

There was a slight bit of fortune

It seemed like Toronto missed a lot of wide-open looks. But who cares, lets be happy (and hope they don’t lay an ostrich egg tomorrow night)! Wizards win, Terrapins win, Aston Villa wins! ! What a great day!

I love the fact that Downing got a chance to play

a full 90. and he looked good doing it. Oh yeah great game by the WIZ!

I'll be at the game

to see if the Jennings hype is for real.

I think the key tomorrow is to contain Jennings and Bogut and let the other Bucks beat you. Unfortunately, Redd is staying home, so he won’t be there to break the offense.

Its always Roger Mason (Jr.) time!

Not too worried about jennings.

As long as he gets chased away from the 3 point line, he won’t get much done with haywood under the rim. I’m more concerned about bogut.

by Knowledge92 on Dec 1, 2009 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

If Gilbert's playing him, I'd be very worried.

He just doesn’t seem to have the quickness to guard speedy players

the Jennings/Bucks hype has cooled down

Although I suppose it’ll improve with Bogut back. I never realized how good he actually is

I am so envious

I think Jennings will be worth the price of admission alone.

Charlie Villanueva is gone as well

has averaged close to 19 points a game against the wizards and was a frequent thorn in our side when we played against Milwaukee.

3pt Game

The two periods where we heated up from beyond the arc showed that the 3pt shot
should be taken more often instead messy drives when the lane is clogged and we
have open looks on the perimeter.
P.S. Why are Villa so popular in the U.S. is it just a catchy name.

Partly it might have to do with American ownership

Although I’ve been a fan since the John Gregory days in the 90s.

Observations

1. Flip with Offensive/Defensive substitutions at the end of the game
2. Bring back Dave Hopla
3. Nice to see Nick still playing Defense…. didn’t shoot well, but had 2 assists and 3 rebounds
4. I like the Boykins-Arenas backcourt that Flip employed in the 4th quarter…. allowed Gil to concentrate on Offense
5. Dom McGuire with a Dom McGuire game. 0 Points, and little else stats wise… but good defense
6. Two HUGE free throws from 7-Day Dray, coming in cold from the bench at the end of the 4th
7. Wizards much better in the second half on the boards.
8. Bosh is a BEAST… and when did he get strong enough to start pushing people around?
9. Brendan Haywood with another All-Star worthy performance. 15 points (7-10), 9 rebounds, 2 Steals, 3 HUGE Blocks
10. Wiz with 20 assists and only 10 turn overs.

Spot on!

Dray redeemed himself with those two FTs and I will wager Dom had an unreal +/-

I got an inkling Gil was back (at least on this night) when he scored that circus 2 off the glass and drew the foul.

Made the long day of flying in from Warsaw worth every minute of the BA agony. See you all tomorrow for 2 wins back to back!

Besides the terrible free throw shooting, the Wizards finally have the Big Three performing all at once. I jumped out of my seat when Arenas finally hit a 3pt. Two first half buzzerbeaters helped as well.

by Unxpekted on Dec 1, 2009 10:25 PM EST reply actions

I'm the odd one out

I didn’t see any team positives on the offensive end of the court. For the most part, it looked like the Big 3 (and the little guy) making their own shots.

Flip’s going to stick with his system no matter what. He ought to at least stop with the multitude of 5-man rotations and let one or two combos gel.

by Izman on Dec 1, 2009 10:27 PM EST reply actions

I'm With You

It was an OK performance, and I really liked that Gil shot more and with more confidence, but that same performance would not have beaten a good team.

it's definitely fortunate

to get a win on the road when we miss so many free throws. i’ll take the W but i feel like we won because jamison shot the lights out on a bunch of jumpers. and because toronto is bad. that won’t get it done on a consistent basis.

prada might be right that there were some incremental improvements. we seemed to make some smart plays in the 4th, so some credit there.

still, not that excited about the team’s play tonight. glad we are playing toronto while they’re struggling.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Dec 1, 2009 10:38 PM EST reply actions

4th quarter

Was a nice change for the Wiz. Haywood is a beast on the OB so far this season. I’d really like to see the Wiz do more of Arenas at 2 and Boykins at 1 since he knows what Flip is looking for in this offense and it will help Gil to settle into a groove.

by Mike Uhrich on Dec 1, 2009 10:40 PM EST reply actions

Funny

Everybody is talking about the Arenas and Boykins lineup as if it were new. It isn’t. Flip tried it many times before and it didn’t work. Tonight Gilbert finally became more aggressive shooting the ball and it did. The key is for Arenas to be aggressive, not necessarily to be paired with Boykins.

by cuppettcj on Dec 2, 2009 8:39 AM EST up reply actions

Never said it was new

Just that I would like to see more of it and that it would hopefully expedite Gil getting his shooting groove back. Seriously what really has worked consistently so far on offense, besides Jamison coming back? Not much. On this team I think Boykins fits the mold best for the type of PG Saunders wants to run his offense. Except for Miller, no one has done much at the 2 this year(beyond the occasional Young spotting) so yeah, right now I would rather see a combo of Boykin at the 1 and Gil at the 2 instead of Gil at the 1 and anyone else at the 2…at least until Miller comes back.

If you want to disagree, fine, but please don’t try to put words into my mouth.

by Mike Uhrich on Dec 2, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

great, great, GREAT defense by Haywood.

I like Arenas at the 2 with Earl.

AJ couldn’t stay with Bosh, but then again Bosh couldn’t stay with AJ either.

Good win everybody.

Somewhat inspirational trivia

A win tomorrow makes this Flip’s 3rd 7-10 start

96-97 7-10 led to 40-42
99-00 7-10 led to 50-32 (I shall mention only in parentheses that the team got swept in the first round, although it was to a portland team that took the lakers to 7 games in the west finals)

Also in 97-98 a 8-9 start after 17 games led to 45-37

by morethesamewiz on Dec 2, 2009 1:07 AM EST reply actions

This

Make me feel better. The fact that both Flip and the Wizards have been known to start slow makes me more optimistic going forward. But still, I didn’t feel our guys played that great last night, and we are still just 7-10.

Didn't get to watch it live, but just finished watching on NBA LP.

The major thing I saw that was the biggest bonus of this game was there were stretches where we just started taking things to the rim instead of just setting for jump shot after jump shot. It seemed to come after we missed a couple shots outside. Pleasant surprise.

Gilbert being aggressive was great.
Young was solid and didn’t make any real “rookie”, boneheaded mistakes.
Haywood on the glass.
Dom with some nice defense and a sky high rebound!

yes

Nearly brought tears to me eyes. That was Basketball 101, reagrdless of what system you lpay. I really hope they keep it up. caron showed me why I was so happy when we got him, ilbert showed (lots of) flashes of “Agent Zero”Nick Young showed he could contribute when he’s NOT scoring, Dom showed why he deserves more PT, and Haywood is shoving his way into the All Star conversation. They need to bring that old shooting coach back. If Brendan would make his free throws, which he’s proven capable of in the past, he’d be close to a 20-10 guy every night. What REALLY impressed me though, was when Flip put Blache in at the end. You know it was because Haywood was missing his free throws, and they needed someone in there who could knock them down. That was a BIG statement from Flip. No WAY Eddie Jordan would’ve shown that kind of confidence in Blatche, or any of his young guys. But I was particularly happy with Brendan cheering on Dray after he knocked down the shots. He could’ve easily sulked for being pulled from a game he had performed so well in.
