Wizards beat the Cavs! All is well!

Lots of guys deserve credit for this one.  The starters for getting the Wizards back in the game in the second quarter.  Gilbert Arenas for battling through a bad shooting game to have a great third quarter.  Antawn Jamison for being awesome.

But the key was the much-maligned bench guys, specifically Andray Blatche, Earl Boykins and DeShawn Stevenson.  They all came in and decided that game in the fourth quarter.

All is well!  Wizards win!  Yay!

All is well

But I still didn’t really like Gilbert tonight… Just thought they looked better with him on the bench. Until that changes I’m gonna hope to see more Boykins out there.
Awesome win tho.

I attribute Gil's 3rd Q performance . . .

to him changing shoes at halftime.

1st half = black shoes
3rd quarter = white shoes

Who on earth knows why????

Gil started to come alive

But still wouldn’t say it was impressive or anything by far…and yes I watched the whole game, from pretty damn close. What intrigued me was the fourth quarter. All of which he seemed to be on the bench…

I can’t believe Gilbert could sit that long in the 4th and the Wizards play that well!

I Can

I don’t know what 3rd quarter everybody else saw, but I did not feel Gilbert played well at all last night, or very well this whole season. He finished 6-22 from the field, which is very, very horrible. Until he gets his head screwed on straight (assuming that the problem is mental), then the Wizards aren’t going anywhere. Beating the CrabDribblers without Shaq or Varejão is not something to get overly excited about. If the Wizards play the same way when those two come back healthy, they lose handily.

A very sane comment

The win was good for the team mentally I hope.

by mogoman on Nov 19, 2009 10:22 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Why?

JJ Hickson has been playing incredibly well as of late. Add +1 or +2 charges and Andersen gives you more than what JJ gave? (this is in all seriousness). Z went off on the Wizards and was making all of his shots. The Cavs went away from this in the second and the Wizards changed some of their schemes. Shaq could get all of the Wizards bigs in foul trouble and makeup could change or it couldn’t.

LeBron and company went into 1 v. 5 mode. This changes because they’re in the game? I mean, it’s all speculation at this point. A win is a win no matter who’s on the court. It’s something we shouldn’t hide behind if we lose either.

Good Win

Cavs fan but, congrats! Missing Shaq and Varejao was to much to overcome as the game wore on and hurt the Cavs on the boards but oh well injuries happen. Mike Brown kept LeBron out to long at the start of the 4th quarter also i think, i was surprised by that especially being behind.
Well, good win Cavs are still better though when it matters. I know most of you won’t be able to take criticism but, your team as is can’t get by in the playoffs to many individual players. Cavs aren’t the best team but, Wizards can’t get by them or anyone else in the playoffs without trading one of the big 3 for someone that can involve the whole team.

by CAVS R BOSS on Nov 18, 2009 10:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Criticism?

We can handle criticism when it’s warranted, but tonight was a great win that featured the entire team… and trading one of our big three for a glue guy? Yikes, that’s like saying trade Mo Williams so you can get someone that gets the whole team involved. What you are describing is what happened to the Cavaliers tonight. All LeBron, no supporting cast. It was 1 vs. 5. Our glue guy tonight was Miller. Yours was… well, no one.

by Craig_ on Nov 18, 2009 10:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, i said injuries happen. You guys love blasting LeBron but, i guarantee your GM would give up major organs to have LeBron on the Wizards. I’m sure you guys would hate LeBron on your team. (yeah right) You guys are also using one half of one game to get all jazzed but, that’s the reason you guys lost to the Cavs 3 years in a row you don’t have anyone to set people up. Maybe you can use the refs as an excuse but, i don’t think they conspired against them 3 years in a row. You are damn right i would trade Mo to get someone like a Paul or Deron Williams. That’s what i meant by trading one of the big 3. The big 3 hasn’t done anything so why not if you can get an elite point guard that’s the only way i’d trade one of them. It’s all good people relax i didn’t say anything bad about your team so chill.

by CAVS R BOSS on Nov 18, 2009 10:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If the Wizards could get Deron Williams or Chris Paul for one of their Big 3, I'm sure they'd do that

But that only happens in fantasyland. In reality, those types of trades just don’t happen.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

by Mike Prada on Nov 18, 2009 10:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

They are good enough players to be traded for Paul though. It was also fantasy land when the Lakers hosed the Grizzlies for Gasol so, anything is possible. Not saying it would happen for the Wizards but, i can see Paul getting traded unless they do something drastic. He wasn’t happy when Scott got fired as coach and he’s on a mediocre team at best. Plus that’s a team always looking to trim payroll and i think by the time his contract comes up again he’s going to be out of there.

TRUE

Like i said i think you guys have a good team it’s just for some reason i think Jamison and Butler would excel even more without Arenas. Don’t get me wrong but, he’s a great player when healthy and can score with the best of them but, i don’t love him as a team guy. Clearly you guys watch him more than i do but, i personally think the contract the Wizards gave him was a mistake. I could be wrong you guys no more about the team than i do.

At the Q we were missing jamison. So come up with something better.

no team?

Gil and Caron shot very poorly and we won. Since Gil has been here, 2 of the big 3 (if the third was larry or caron) had to play to give us a chance..if not all three. Tonight, only twan shot well and we won by 17. Lots of ways to criticize the wiz, and I agree that the cavs looked like they ran out of gas, but come on the team criticism is really weak.

And if they dont look on the same page we have had lots of new guys, guys who have not played well together, oh and a new coach/system

Some post game thoughts...

What if we started Caron, but had him more involved with the second team as the “go-to guy” and have a defensive filler in there.

Starting lineup: Arenas, Miller, Butler, Jamison, Haywood
Leave Butler in with the second lineup and filter in as needed so we see more of the lineups we saw tonight. It will also allow him to feel and find his game knowing that he’s getting the ball. I thought that was a master stroke by Flip.

Just some thoughts.

I think it would be better Gilbert coming off the bench. That way he doesn’t have to worry about being a point guard he can just come in to score and not worry about playing point. Being a point guard doesn’t suit him. I actually use to like the Wizards a bit until all Wizards fans started blasting LeBron all the time but, unlike most hardcore fans i can be diplomatic i like talking sports no matter who it’s with. Miller was really good. What impressed me most of all was that on several possessions, he was the one who was initiating the offense, rather than a point guard. Driving, dishing, cutting, rebounding, hustling. And taking and hitting shots. That kind of effort can be contagious. Let’s hope it continues to spread.

I'm Still Flipping Out

This is a star league, and our star sucks right now. At a certain point, Gil is going to stop getting as many fouls called because he isn’t making shots like a star should. Then where does that leave us? Last night, I felt that Žydrūnas Ilgauskas had a better chance of making a long jumper than Agent Zero. Despite the win, this bothers me tremendously. It’s been 10 games now, WTF? You can’t win in this league consistently if your “star” cannot make shots.

As a Cavs fan, this was really frustrating to watch. It seemed like we had a good game plan coming into the game (12 assists on the first 12 baskets made!), but it completely fell apart. As a couple people have noted, it pretty much deteriorated to 1 v. 5 with LBJ trying to take over. Brilliant move by Flip to stick Stevenson on LBJ to entice him to try to do too much offensively.

Even though LBJ shot well (12-19), a lot of it came out of the flow of the offense, and he made some silly gambles that resulted in turnovers. Having said that, he was pretty much the only Cavs player that actually showed up to play (and even then, LBJ was playing some of the worst defense I’ve seen him play in a couple years). Pathetic effort by the rest of the team. Back-to-back may have had something to do with that, but there is still no excuse for such poor execution and energy when we know that Wizards always play us tough in D.C.

Oh well, I won’t stress too much over this loss. Its not a good barometer for how we are performing as a team. It seems like Wiz-Cavs regular season games have very little representation of the overall team success (see 2-2 last year).

Btw, I still don’t understand how half of Jamison’s shots go in, but they guy is a straight beast.

Agreed

That’s why I tempered my excitement for this win because they were missing key players and like you said the team didn’t play that well and it especially showed in the second half. Still it was a promising performance and something too build on. Glad Twan is back and now order can be restored on the team meaning that guys who played reserve roles should get fewer minutes.

Excellent Point
Brilliant move by Flip to stick Stevenson on LBJ to entice him to try to do too much offensively.

LeBron is at his best when he is working in the flow of the offense and often facilitating for his teammates. But nobody throws his game off more than DeShawn. Frankly, DeShawn has been playing very poorly lately, so I was a bit surprised to see him come off the bench. But then I realized what you did; DeShawn really screws with LeBron’s head. DeShawn absolutely hates LeBron, and LeBron knows it. When DeShawn was guarding him, all LeBron could think about was showing him up. It backfired. The whole second half became the LeBron show on offense for the Cavaliers. Everybody else on your team disappeared. LeBron knows better, but he just couldn’t help himself with DeShawn in his grill.

Another reason Blatche deserves credit

The bulk of his minutes (it may actually have been all of them) came at center, whereas he’d been used as a PF all season. I know he’s versatile enough to do both, but given that the coaching staff had wanted him prepared for just the one role it was nice to see him take on something different that what he’d been successful with thus far and succeed.

Ridiculous Upside, where developing talent and winning are not mutually exclusive.

65% the rest of the way

Flip still has work to do integrating all of his offensive weapons. Winning 65% of the remaining games should be the bar for this team.

Up next: Who’s going to contain Durant? Will Flip trust Blatche in this game?

Gil Performance

Gilbert is a streak player – goes super hot then super cold. Always has been, probably always will be. Right now the ups and downs are more pronounced. They will smooth our over the season with experience in the Flip Offense.

If the Wiz are able to crawl out of there hole and get a playoof berth they will need a healthy motivated Gil to succeed. When he gets hot he is still the best one on the team to win the game in the end – particularly a road playoff game.

Gils performance, style and antics make him a lightening rod for praise and criticism

I enjoyed this line from Bron,

Icing his wrist in the locker room after the game, James noted a 35-15 discrepancy in foul shots that favored the hosts, saying: “They definitely got to the free-throw line way more than we did. We feel we attacked at times, and we didn’t get the whistle.”

Blaming the refs, huh? Maybe you shouldn’t have jacked up 20 foot jumpers all night, might that have had something to do with it, 1 on 5?

Isn't this the time for all the Jamison haters to recant?

There was a TON of anti-Antawn talk prior to the season. He’s always been my favorite player because of the professionalism he brings to the game. So … how about a few “I have to admit I might have been wrong” comments?

by Elvin_is_my_Elvis on Nov 19, 2009 9:04 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I have to admit I do not totally appreciate his game

Never been a hater. Love twan, but when things are going bad a lot of times he is jacking to many jump shots and not playing D. He ends up getting way too much blame. Also, never hated twan, just thought that using him in a trade for Amare or Bosh would make us better

But he is a stud, and for our team (this year) I am not sure Bosh or Amare would make a big difference. We need his leadership and heart

by Blatche4MVP on Nov 19, 2009 9:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This might be me

I’ve always liked his offense and his overall effort level — just not his D and leadership. Nothing’s changed about that. He’s a huge asset on this team because he’s the only dangerous low-post scorer. His D will still make me crazy at times during the season, and I’m sure he’ll say things about his teammates that make me cringe. I do like the way he approaches the game, and definitely want him on the team. I just get frustrated with the way people laud his leadership, when I think it sucks.

Like Jamison

Just think his lack if effort on D is a poor example for the young guys and that it is tough fir us to play Arenas, AJ, and CB together defensively. Of those three he is the most replaceable, oldest, and has arguably the worst contract. If our team was constructed differently I would be way more attached to AJ. I think you are mischaracterizing peoples criticisms of AJ. No one said he couldn’t score 30 points. Some people just aren’t wild about him being on of theworst defenders in the league.

by BayAreaBullet on Nov 19, 2009 1:10 PM EST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think Jamison does lack effort on defense.

I just think he’s not a great defender — he’s mediocre on defense. He usually seems to be hustling, but he seems to have trouble defending post-up power forwards. I don’t think he’s in the class of bad defenders like Nick Young though. I also don’t think he’d be a very good coach, particularly with young players, but you can’t blame him for Jordan’s unwillingness to foster young talent. I guess I think he’s solid in a way that Haywood is — a guy who shows up and plays. He brings the same game most nights and the shots either fall or they don’t. Either way, the Wizards seem to me to be a better team because of him beyond his 20/10 contributions.

by Elvin_is_my_Elvis on Nov 19, 2009 1:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Jamison does lack effort

He is always releasing early to start a fast break, leaves his man for steals instead of sticking with his man. If he thinks he gets fouled he argues the call instead of running back, if he is tired he makes a steal attempt in the back court instead of running back on D. He is consistently beaten down the court by his man making the defense have to rotate and he is atrocious against pick and rolls. Granted he could probably never be better than a mediocre defender but his lack of effort is what bothers me. He has been named to “No defense” lists by sports columnists for years so it’s not like I’m the only person who thinks this. Again if we had better defenders around him I wouldn’t have a problem with it as lots of players are only effective on one side of the court it’s just his lack of effort is compounded by Arenas and CB. Not AJ’s fault though that he plays with other defensively challenged stars. Maybe he will be better this year especially if Flip reduces his minutes so he has more energy.
As for the young guys I wasn’t saying I want him to be teaching them D fundamentals I’m just saying our jaws droped here at BF when Mcgee said something along the lines of “I like that Bigs can shoot jumpers in Flip’s system” this summer but can you blame him? When the vets on the team have gotten plenty of minutes and TONS of money only playing on one side of the court don’t you think a young guy is gonna come up worrying about his O more than his D?

by BayAreaBullet on Nov 19, 2009 1:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Who actually put forth effort on the defensive end

during the EJ years. Can you blame the Big three really? Look how much of the scoring load they had to handle. Something has to give when you play those type of minutes day in and day out.

About AJ he is somewhat of a tweener. No real set position and thusly there is always going to be a mismatch on the defensive end. AJ still gets a huge amount of minutes because he creates a huge mismatch on the offensive end. Its a give and take I can live with. Plus I don’t see who we would replace him with. There are many stars out there that aren’t know for there defense. Hell Nash won 2 MVP’s w/o playing any defense.

On Paper...

I didn’t see the game (checked BulletsForever on my iPhone at a bar and was PSYCHED!!), but the comments here (while generally enthusiastic) don’t reflect what I’m seeing in the box score. The numbers are fat.

What I’m seeing is Haywood continuing to be one of the league’s leading rebounders, Gilbert distributing, Miller Miller Miller! (+26 …!?), and Jamison putting his money where his mouth is (I did not expect him to come out so strong … I figured we were going to have one of those: “It’s his first game back, he doesn’t understand the system etc…” Nope. Game on with Jamison)

Jamison: 31 points, 10 rebounds
Haywood: 13 rebounds
Miller: 17 points. 6 assists, 8 rebounds
Arenas: 18 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds
Butler: 19 points, 6 rebounds

Yeah, Gilbert was 6 for 22 (yechh), but everyone else (Miller 7 for 11, Jamison 12 for 22, Butler 6 for 16) was more on target, and we were making our free throws (88.6%) … including Gilbert (finally) 5 for 6. And hell, I’ll stand by Gilbert for putting up the shots to fight his way out of the shooting slump rather than disappearing.

This is good stuff. And the more I’m convinced Miller is the heart of this team right now.

The win is tempered

by the way we looked in the first half, just plain awful. Also, you have to remember that the Crabs were on the second night of a back-to-back without Shaq, and looked very tired in the second half. The end numbers look good, but this would have been a much more demoralizing loss then it is a “statement” win.

I’m optomistic that Jamison will right the ship however, we were in need of some on court leadership. Here’s to starting a win streak!!

I Would Feel A Lot Better

If Gil would remember how to hit shots. He’s been cold for pretty much the whole season, save for a couple of decent shooting performances in 1 or 2 games. Had he been 10-22 instead of 6-22, I would be a whole lot more enthusiastic. But when I see Z stroking it from just inside of the 3-point line while Gil is building brick cities on the other end, it makes me wonder if we can climb out of this hole we have dug ourselves in.

Miller was the stud last night. Until Gil gets his game back, Flip should run the offense through Miller. That guy can make it rain.

Did anyone else notice...

That it seemed like Gilbert was holding onto the ball a microsecond longer than usual… his jumper just looked off even before seeing the result of the ball w/ the basket.

Very subtle…maybe it was just me

otherwise great win…LETS BUILD ON THIS

Question

with the emergence of Boykins (hell of a signing!) and Foye + Stevenson off the bench, does that make Nick Young expendable? I know we all would love to flip James but do you think his value is enhanced when combo’d with NY? MJ + NY for Camby anyone?

I am gonna take that double post to mean

that NY is really expendable and should be traded immediately for a washing machine ala " Semi Pro "

Whoops

Will delete one of those posts. I fail.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Ou guys as Wiz fan. Chill out! Its early, very early. We have our pieces back. Trust when I say. We have the best team the wizards have ever seen.

Why are we giving the Crabbers a pass

So what if they weren’t full strength. They signed a geatric 36 year old center. Did they really expect him to play all 82 games. IF any fan base is aware that injuries are part of the game then it should be us. Having gone through these last two seasons with our wizards I don’t have any sympathy for the injury excuse.

I am with unxpekted in thinking we are turning the corner.

Good win and a needed one...

I still think Gilbert will come around (he contibuted mightily in Q3), but EG looks like he plucked out a winner when he signed Boykins.

One game at a time and all, but you have to feel better about the Wiz now than a couple of days ago, yes?

Stevenson Bobble-Hands?

Both Michael Lee and Mike Jones’ post-game reports mention Stevenson Bobble-Hand figurines handed out to the crowd. Anybody got a picture of this?
