Fabricio Oberto and Stevenson loss. Oberto loves leaving the paint open. I counted 6-8 points scored on us from Oberto mishaps.

Not unfair...
But this game didn’t come down to that.

Bright side
Now that we have Boykins, getting Jamison and Foye back should mean no more Stevenson and very little Oberto. If we ever really need Stevenson’s “defense”, we should just play DMac instead.

Yep
And if Foye and Jamison had those 22 minutes we would have won.

New Idea
Keep Deshawn and Oberto out the game and we will probably win.
I officially jump on the Taser bandwagon. I’d rather see him anyday over Stevenson. I almost feel Stevensons gettin paid to make us lose at times. Key shots missed, slow defense on that Gordon make, unecessary fowl. I mean come on. Oh and does anyone know why Oberto defends about 18 feet from the rim??? Please answers. Flip please please stop playing Deshawn and Oberto if he continues to defend in the crowd leaving the paint to be defended by Earl Boykins.
Ps Earl is good. Very good. Really BF, Ad? I think Ad can’t compare at all to Boykins

Stevenson
once again proves he is over rated as a defender. All I saw was Bynum and Gordon score at will all night. Stuckey was almost as dangerous. Sure, these guys did what they were known for. But Stevenson, as a “defensive specialist”, should at least be able to slow them down. But he didn’t. He is a liability out there, plain and simple.

Especially when Gordon kept blowing past him (who is impossible to guard regardless), I was thinking – just stick Dom on him. I’m getting sick of D-Steve.
My swag was phenomenal.
by se7en on Nov 14, 2009 11:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
to be fair that was a bad matchup for D-steve who defends bigger 2 guards usually
this is where we REALLY needed Foye. He is the only guy on our team who can guard bynum or gordon. DS is a situational defender right now.

My Polyanna comment of the night:
They actually played well tonight. Gil had only a couple turnovers, and 10 assists. All 5 starters were in double figures. The team was 53% from beyond the three-point line. Eight blocks, good defensive energy. They only missed 3 of their 25 free throws.

Should Have Gone to Caron ...
I tuned in during the 4th. Caron seemed to be confident and in a groove (as opposed to Gilbert)—making two big jumpers down the stretch. Why weren’t they setting him up in the final minute? He could have threatened with a 3, and he’s the guy (as opposed to Gilbert right now) who seems confident going to the hoop and getting fouled. (Clue me in. Was Caron looking bad during the first 3 quarters.)
Boykins had a big debut, but you’ve got to be kidding me. The offense seemed to be looking to him in crunch time. The brand new guy? Not a good sign.
I’m liking Miller and could not believe they took him out and put in the supposedly great defender DeShawn S. … who immediately lost the game for us.

Caron
played better in the 2nd half, but he was settling too much for jumpers in the first. Which he’s pretty much been doing all season.
I think Boykins is like a drug. It feels so good right now, but in the long run, not so much. Once they started pressing him more, he wasn’t as effective. Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s very good in spurts, but you can’t let them get a bead on his play, or else he becomes more of a problem than anything. He’s a great scorer, but once he starts leaving his feet in the lane, it’s an instant turnover.
As for Miller, I think they pulled him because he re-injured his shoulder. Which is understandable. What’s not understandable is putting in Stevenson. It’s time to give McGuire a shot as the teams resident “defensive specialist.”

Yeah I loved what I saw from Boykins, but
we leaned on him way too much throughout the whole game. When it came down to it, Bynum was quick enough to keep up with him and too strong to drive on. Our offensive possessions down the stretch looked liked replays.
by Boo. on Nov 14, 2009 11:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
As someone mentioned earlier
They kept the TO’s down moved the ball around and such. but that was an abysmal defensive display. Bynum and gordon got there driving shot whenever they wanted it.
by ccrun1800 on Nov 14, 2009 10:25 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Yep
Unfortunately this was probably the best they’ve played since the New Jersey game. They just ran into another team that makes plays going to the basket. Stuckey, Bynum, and Gordon did the same thing Wade did to us. They got into the lane and made stuff happen. We NEED to find someone who can guard that type of player.
by CJHutch on Nov 14, 2009 10:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
How 'Bout
Instead of that, we actually find someone who can make a shot like those guys did in the final minutes. Gilbert continues to miss shots (including free throws) in the 4th quarter, when he used to be so clutch.
The defense has not been the problem during this losing streak, IMO. I think we are just so conditioned to poor defense from the Wizards that we expect that to be one of the reasons we lose every game we do. No, we got plenty of stops in the 4th quarter. What we didn’t get were guys making shots. Gil gets contact driving to the rim, loses the ball, and then gets in the ref’s face. On the other end, Gordon gets contact driving to the rim, hits a running jumper, and also doesn’t get the foul. The difference is, he doesn’t need the foul to be called. Gilbert is trying to bring back the Hibachi, but right now, it’s still very cold. Until our “go-to” guy in the 4th quarter gets his shot back, we will continue to lose games.

Also didn't help that
they defended our pick and roll really well, and we didn’t have an answer besides out-of-control drives by Gil or Caron.
We had plenty of possessions to seal it, but got sloppy. That Haywood walk was really big.
by Boo. on Nov 14, 2009 11:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
that would be nice. But I still think Arenas will get “it” back. He really hasn’t played in 2 years. Between him, Foye, Miller, and now Boykins, we have guys who can make shots. What we don’t have is ONE good perimeter defender. Maybe if we had a decent defender, it wouldn’t come down to the other team hitting their shots. Those 3 guys are good, but none of them are all stars. A decent defender could AT LEAST slow those guys down.

Response to Legislator
CAron,
Looked good on those shots but was lost for most of the rest of the game. He has a habit of waitng for the defender to get on him then to make his move. I am starting to think that Caron got his all star numbers from being a hard working guy on a bad team. He is a good, but not great player.
Gil has been incredibly streaky. He goes hot and cold on both shooting and assists from quarter to quarter. We need him to play consistently to win.
Boykins being on a 10 day contract and being a leading scorer is a bad sign.
It is going to be very interesting to see what having Jamison back will do.
Flip has a huge job ahead. The Wiz are digging themselves a major hole and are starting to remind me of the overatted and underachieving Redskins
Stevenson is a total brick and what happened to Nick Young. Thought this would be his year

I Had Hoped
That Stevenson would come back from his off-season back surgery and be at least the player he was two seasons ago, if not better. Back then, his defense was rarely spectacular, but at least it was consistently solid. On offense, he would often get hot from the 3-point line and lose feeling in his face.
Unfortunately, that did not happen. D-Steve always looks a step slow on defense this season and simply cannot guard fast guards, and there are a lot of fast guards in this league. On offense, Stevenson can feel every square inch of his face pretty much the whole game. Realistically, it doesn’t look like he’s ever going to be the same player he was before the back problems really flared up, and he was never that great to begin with. It’s time to cut our losses with him and plant his butt at the far end of the bench next to Mike James.

He’s in the game solely for his defensive abilities and still got burned by his man (be it Bynum or Gordon) over and over.
But he was an improvement over Boykins and Arenas. I wish Flip had been able to make an adjustment to give some better help on those drives, we really didn’t have an answer.

Meanwhile...
…Brandon Jennings scores 55, and the Bucks are 5-2, while the Wizards are 2-7.
In case you care, the record for most points scored in a game is, of course, Wilt… with only 58. Damnit to hell he didn’t get 4 more points. I’m rooting for this kid.

Stevenson only played 11 minutes, oberto 13, not enough to ruin a game.
Boykins played great.
Arenas played well too, especially in the opening of the second half.
Butler played better than he has.
Miller finally shot the ball.
Haywood and Blatche played well. ’Nuff Said.
Here are the two main issues the Wiz have this early season:
1. They come out flat and get dominated in the 1st q.
or
2. They come out amazing in the 1st q and then fall flat somewher between the 2nd q and the 3rd q.
Which means they do not know how to hold onto a lead or stop the bleeding.
This wiz have “it” for brief intermittent periods throughout each game and then once strict “D” is applied to them they stop running Flips offense and then they stop running their defense…
Its clear that the Wiz do not know how to play together under pressure yet.
It will happen through experience. They’ll turn it around.

To add to my point...
13 min can be enough to ruin a game but Oberto and Stevenson did not lose this game for the Wiz. Sure Stevenson had a dumb foul. But how does that explain the Wiz blowing the good lead in the 3rd q. The wiz do not know how to put away a team yet this year

The season starts on Wednesday
All of the key players will be suited on Wednesday. The first nine games were just an extended preseason schedule, given all of the new players, the new coaching system, the injuries, and the return of Arenas after two years of inactivity.
With the addition of Boykins, the Wiz now have quality players and back-ups at every position. The onus is on Flip to figure out what works best.
Nevertheless, here are a few observations:
1) Arenas isn’t all there. Therefore, putting all of the burden of running the offense on him isn’t a good idea.
2) a backcourt of Arenas and Boykins is defensively challenged.
3) Some players are not NBA ready (DS, NY, DM). Oberto is a spot contributor at best. The coaching staff needs to commit to working with McGee to get some improvement.
4) Flip ought to anticipate slow spots and be prepared with a second unit to change the momentum.
The season starts on Wednesday. No excuses going forward.

This is where Foye being out really hurt us
he is the only guy that can guard those small guards on our team. Plus we put that line up out there in the third where Caron was the only scorer and we could use Foye’s scoring and playmaking abilities. Boykins was exactly what he is. A high usage volume scorer with no defense who can pop off for a big night occasionally. I think Caron would be well served moving back to his normal role of 12-14 shots a game when Jamison and Foye come back. With those 2 out we need him to score alot but I think he is more effective as a guy aiming for 18 points a game then one aiming for 24. I was really hoping Critt. would pan out cuz his skill set is needed on this team so it really sucks to see him missing out on such a golden opportunity. Oberto is a situational 8-10 minute guy. Getting some run against bigger teams where we need his fouls and getting DNP’d occasionally against other teams that don’t have a dominant center. In his defense though he has been playing out of position at the 4. He doesn’t have the quickness to play the 4 anymore. Gil looks like his legs are tired. His shot is flat and he is getting no knee bend. Especially on FT’s. I’m hoping it’s just muscle fatigue and not knee pain. They said his leg was totally atrophied when he went to Grover so it wouldn’t be surprising for his legs to be tired at this point. It would be nice if we could rest him. Miller has looked solid and it was good to see him firing it up last night. Blatche continues to impress me. I hope Haywood can continue to rebound at this rate. As for the teams overall lack of swagger I think we will be fine once we get a couple nice wins under our belt. Once we get one or two I think it will start to look easy again.

Anybody know what Foye's status is?
When is he coming back? Will Antawn be returning in time for the Cavs on Wednesday?
by satchmore on Nov 15, 2009 11:54 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Hated to see them lose that one...
I have very mixed emotions about Earl Boykins winding up as our leading scorer last night… Clearly this labels him a good pick-up, but what is the message that is being sent when the last player signed (and to a non guaranteed contract at that) winds up being your go-to guy for much of the game?
If Flip is going to earn his money and retain his cedibility, he better figure out how to fit the pieces together better and soon. Right now this team is less than the sum of its parts and that won’t get you deep into to the playoffs, folks.
An aside on Brandon Jennings… I think the kid is the real deal and good on Milwaukee for getting off the draft schneid.. after Yi and Joe Who? they have to be breathing a heavy sigh of relief. Now as long as Skiles does not play Sargent Snorkel with him, the Bucks could be a very nice team.
