We've done enough previewing and anticipating for this season, so this game preview is going to be brief.  Just a few things to keep in mind:

  • Josh Howard is out for Dallas with ankle problems, hence Quinton Ross getting the start tonight.  Obviously, Antawn Jamison and Javaris Crittenton are out for the Wizards.
  • Still no word on who starts at shooting guard or power forward for the Wizards.  As soon as we find out, I'll update this post.  Marc Stein says Oberto gets the nod at power forward, while Michael Lee says Mike Miller gets the start at shooting guard.
  • If you haven't already, tune into the first episode of The Dagger Report, the new podcast of Bullets Forever and Truth About It.  Tune in at the end when we talk to Rob Mahoney of The Two Man Game about tonight's game.
  • This season, Kyle and I will occasionally be chatting on ComcastSportsNet.com during games.  We use the CoverItLive software, which is the same Ball Don't Lie uses.  Kyle is chatting tonight, while I will be chatting on Friday when we play the Hawks.  I realize a lot of you will probably be talking in this thread, but if you have a moment, I encourage you to check out ComastSportsNet.com as well.
  • My key to the game?  Gilbert Arenas has to be aggressive.  Rob, Kyle and I talked about this on the podcast, but Dallas' biggest weakness is keeping small, quick guards out of the lane.  They have no answer for Arenas' type.  However, for Arenas to take advantage the most, he has to be aggressive driving to the basket.  We can't see the passive Gilbert Arenas tonight.

That's all for now.  I'm going to post a second thread at halftime so that the live commenting doesn't slow down from too much activity.  If you're new here, use this space to chat about the game with fellow Wizards fans in real time.  The comments load automatically, so there's no need to refresh the page.  It's literally like a live chat.  Pretty much anything goes in game threads, as long as you keep it relatively clean.

GO WIZARDS!

UPDATE: Second half thread is here.

"Relatively Clean"

Thanks for leaving room for our inadvertent swear-words out of frustration. They will come in handy during the 4th throughout the season. :)

Go Wiz

In other news, Cleveland is really waxing Boston right now. Damn I hate the Cavs. Shaq actually appears to be in relatively good shape to start the season with 6 quick points early in the 4th.

Hating Cleveland is a borderline requirement

It took me all of one possession to realize why I hated Varejao so much.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

I loathe everything about the Cavs...

I absolutely want to throw up in my mouth everytime I see Lebron James… He is so in love with himself. And yes Varajao is a complete dick. Cant wait until we wax them this year…

Lebron is good. He’s still an asshole but at least he can back it up with his play.

Here's what I am looking for:

Not a win, but:

How does Flip coach?
a) Three scorers on the floor at all times?
b) Are the rotations set?
c) Any quick player benching for mistakes?
d) Any small ball?
e) Do the young guys get minutes in a blow-out (or DS, MJ, FO)?

Are the players ready to play 30+ minutes on both ends of the court?

Can Arenas go 20 and 8, with 4 turnovers or less?

Who plays best with Arenas in the backcourt?

Can Blatche start the season on the right foot?

Are Miller and Foye ready to fit in?

Haywood....

3 big dunks in the 1st quarter. I still contend that Haywood was the biggest reason our team went in the toilet last season. The year before Arenas missed almost the whole year and we still won 43 games.

I dont think...

He is an elite NBA Center by any stretch of the imagination. But with how strong our forwards our we don’t need a dominant center but someone who can plug that hole. And his length is really impressive down low. And unlike McGee, he actually has a feel for whats going on in the paint. You take him away, and our whole system crumbles and holes are exposed everywhere. And Oberto…. sheesh those 2 quick fouls in a minute certainly didn’t look promising, lol.

by KissMyButler! on Oct 27, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

THAT’s what I talked about in the podcast…. Haywood will get a ton of layups and dunks this year on assists from Gilbert…

Gil is gonna average 8-10 assists this year; all due to Flip Saunder’s offensive system…

Stevenson is going to be a total afterthought about 20 games into the season?

Based on how he played tonight

I’d hope so. He tries hard, but just doesn’t have the legs.

Its astonishing

Foye ONLY EVER goes right. I knew this – but watching it happen is almost disorienting. How can he possibly be effective like this?

by Manimal Smith on Oct 27, 2009 9:30 PM EDT reply actions

Cue the Wolves fans saying "I told you so"

In Foye’s defense, Jamison also only goes right and it works for him.

Unfortunately

Foye going right isn’t working so well, thus far at least.

by bigrm18 on Oct 27, 2009 9:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Jamison doesn't play as much off the dribble

Seriously – I really think Foye isn’t going to be so good for us this year. Its nice that he is probably our 7th best player though.

You can get mad at him for only going right

But if he goes left, you might change your tune

Sup Fellas

Been ranting over in Comcast Live Blog but just wanted to lay down quick Sup. Blatche is teasing me hard with his stellar play. Miller/Foye have made key contributions. Agent Zero’s giving me serious mid 00’s flashbacks and man did I miss Haywood.

What? They don't have TV in the D-League? Don't watch me, watch TV.

Blatche is playing out of this universe. He’ll come back to earth next game.
