So, now that we've seen preseason and all that, what do you think the Wizards record is going to be this year?

Post your prediction in this thread.  I say 47-35, Kyle is way more optimistic and says 55-27.  What say you?

(And in case you're worried about giving a prediction out of fear of being way off ... don't worry, everyone was way off last year).

My Prediction:

46 wins…Butler’s an All-Star again and Arenas is involved in MVP talk. Blatche becomes the victim of trade rumors in January.

by Pryme on Oct 26, 2009 9:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’d say 50 wins. I believe that Foye, Blatche and McGee will exceed the expectations for them. I also think there will be one major trade by the deadline with James and/or DS involved. Hopefully, AJ gets back after 10 games and the chemistry kicks into gear quickly.

49 wins, even though it’ll look way optimistic after two weeks.

by bronco6778 on Oct 26, 2009 9:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm thinking 45-37

But that’s because I expect us to have a slow start. I really think we’ll be one of those teams that really comes on strong in the second half when Flip figures out the players and the players figure out the system.

44 wins,

due to the slow start without the Gentleman.

44 wins also

Too many “easier said than done” things need to go right for the Wiz. New offense, better defense, incorporating new players, incorporating old players, Gilbert figuring out his role, improvement of young guys, thin front court. The elite teams polished, we reconstructed. Would take two seasons at least, do we have that long?

50 wins isn't crazy

So I’ll get out of the middle of the road and say 51.

48-34

48 for me too

And the Wizards show in the regular season that they can defeat the East’s big 3 in the playoffs.

I'll embelish on that

48 wins, and with 10 games left, 50-52 will seem well within the team’s grasp. But then they’ll lose some of those classic “how-could-the-wizards-lose-that” games to the Nets or the Bucks or something.

Still, they’ll make it to the second round, maybe the ECF’s…

50-32

2nd in the Southeast, 3rd in the East

Like mamemimo, I believe they’ll really come on strong after the first 20 games or so. By then, Flip will have figured out his main 8-9 man rotation – and everyone will know their roles. Gil will have figured out how to balance the need to create and facilitate AND score the ball. Jamison should be back in full swing; and Miller will be out of his shell and firing 3-pointers (instead of hesitating, and passing)….

Deepest team in the East (perhaps besides Orlando) – and will be able to more easily withstand any minor injuries (tweaked ankles, sore backs, etc…) better than almost any other team.

My prediction is also predicated on at least one of the top teams in the East falling prey to the injury bug (my money is on Boston)… One of those top teams (Boston, Cleveland, Orlando) will drop below 50 wins , mostly due to injuries , and have a disappointing year. (similar, but not as bad as the Wizards had last year)…

3rd in the East?!

I love it the optimism, but which of those 3 elite teams do you think will drop below 50? I doubt it will be Orlando. Cavs could be great, but I think Shaq confuses things. Boston depends upon healthiness.

My swag was phenomenal.

by se7en on Oct 26, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

actually

I’m on record saying ONE of the top 3 teams will fall out due to injuries – and the top candidate would be Boston , because of their age, and previous injury history…

But, let’s face it, if an injury happened to either LeBron James or Dwight Howard, those teams would be in trouble.

Is it morally wrong...

…to wish injury upon LeBron?

I know a Dwight injury would help us as well, but I don’t wish that upon him. Dwight is likable, and he’s not in his prime yet.

49

Good enough for 4th in the east, 2nd in the division.

by MR on Oct 26, 2009 10:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes, I am waaaay optimistic ...

And as a disclaimer, I’ll say that I made that prediction before Jamison got hurt.

… But I’m still sticking with it.

This team may start slow, but they will really come together as the season progresses.

I believe!!

45

and hopefully playing like a 55 win team in April. Too many new pieces, too much adjustment, too many players missing time in preseason. and a TOUGH 15 game start to the season (check out Michael Lee’s post on the start of the season). They may be playing well and start 6-9.

Its about the finish, not the start. Unless one of the big 3 teams drops to the pack, we are not finishing in the top 3 and will be on the road in the second round. Its just about being healthy and coming together by April…oh, and finishing at least 5th so that we dont have to play the big three in the first rd

45 Wins

Nothing about the pre-season (even before Old Knees went down) had me thinking we would come out of the gate hot. Still, with a strong enough second half of the year and we can challenge 50 Ws.

really wanted to say 50, but like many others, Jamison out + tough schedule I think equals slow-ish start.

Put me down for 53

I think they aim for 55 but fall short. Going on a long winning streak to end season.

Nobody is going below 44

I like it.

If I had to bet money on it, I’d probably go with 48.

The Over/Under at Sportsbook is 41.5. Anyone taking Under? Factor in the injury bug and the curse of les boulez, and 41.5 seems fair.

My swag was phenomenal.

50-12

That’s right, 20 games before the franchise best record, the NBA season will be canceled because of a strike by all of the arena employees in each of the NBA arenas. You may cll me pessimistic, but I’m a Wizards fan!

In seriousness though, I think approaching 50 wins is possible. If the defense works better than expected, I think we can be much better than that this year. Let’s see how the trade deadline works out, also.

prediction for the upcoming season

Too much change and a tough schedule upfront.

by forthepeople on Oct 26, 2009 2:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree....

I think it’s going to take them 10-15 games to even start to gel. I’d be happy w/ 2-4 games under .500 in that time frame until they start to play as everyone is anticipating. I’m expecting 3rd in the SE and 5th/6th in the East. 2nd & 4th/5th at best.

comment on predictions for the upcoming season.

I’ve been wasting my time on WIZARDS INSIDER. You folks definitely are drinking the Kool-aid. This is the place to be no doubt. Do we become drunk and disorderly from imbibing the stuff as well as sagacious scribe’s?

My guardedly optomistic prediction of 38 wins more or less is way low on this tote-board. Here’s hoping you all are right, and I’m stupid for not realizing the revelation to be wrought by the FLIPSTER. I’m intrigued to see how MR. SAUNDERS’ coaching acumen is following EJ’s and ET’s coaching rather than LARRY BROWN’s.

Welcome

Wiz Insider is for people who love to say “First!”

Well, I like Wiz Insider too, but you’ll never find better analysis and plain, ridiculous optimism than Bullets Forever. I can’t sleep at night if I think they’re only getting 38 wins, so I’ll convince myself otherwise.

By the way, the Kool-aid tastes great.

My swag was phenomenal.

Insider

You’ll see a decidedly different tone here than on Insider…. especially in the comments. People here are fans of the Wizards -

Sure, we sometimes get a little over-optimistic…. but I think that’s better than the opposite.

Why the pessimism?

In 07-08 we won 43 and that was essentially without Gil altogether and without Butler for a while. Adding Arenas, Miller, Foye is worth 5 losses? Not to mention the growth of some of the young guys and a new (better?) coach. All we’ve really lost from that squad was Daniels.

I don’t think that’s Kool-aid.

Who do you see finishing above us in the East?

(and welcome)

ESPN Power Rankings

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/powerranking?season=2010&week=0

Week one, wiz are in the second half of the league just below 76ers, Raptors, and Heat. We probably belong around that cluster for now.

by forthepeople on Oct 26, 2009 2:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I agree. We need to put up or shut up. Which is what Gil’s trying to say. Except “not say” because he wants to put up AND shut up.

My swag was phenomenal.

46

46 wins, Butler falls off a bit this year, the rest of the league starts realizing that Haywood is really good, Arenas is about 85% of what he was pre-injury layoffs. Antawn returns to form post recovery.

Foye is mostly ineffective, Miller is the start of the trade.

We don’t make any major trade at the deadline and prefer to let our contracts expire.

44 of the good ones

but if Gil/CB3/AJ miss 25+ games combined then I think we miss the playoffs.

48 to 50 Wins

With the obvious caveat that we still mostly healthy. I can’t predict how the rest of the East will shake-out, but I figure that we should be at least 4th in the East and possibly higher.

50. No, 47. No, 50. No, 47.

Over the summer I found a way to get to 50+ wins with Win Shares, for what it is worth. Having done that, it is hard to pour the kool-aid down the drain and go with a lower number, even though 47 sounds a lot more likely, especially with an injury already logged and such a disjointed preseason. Oh well, there are better things than being right—51 wins it is!

Improvement

I’m going out on a limb here, but I think the team is better this year. Har har.
44 wins. Only thing I learned from preseason is that the team is still kind of lousy defensively and Jamison’s hurt fior a bit. Feels like a second round playoff exit, unless circumstances fall just right (or wrong).
