Meh
He ‘grazed’ his elbow, and I doubt it affected the shot THAT much. Besides, Mike James didn’t have a prayer in making that shot anyways. Plus, there should have been a better execution on whatever Flip had drawn up. I have a hard time rewarding them with a W over THAT elbow graze.
I do think JaVale was fouled though, from what I remember seeing from the replay, but it was a boneheaded play regardless… Perhaps it’s even the way it is, because you know, the ball doesn’t lie, right?
My swag was phenomenal.
didn't affect the shot?
My original take on the whole thing was that Green never touched James… however after watching the replay, it’s clear James’ off-hand was bothered by the impact of Green’s hand.
You try shooting when someone hits your off-hand… see how many 3-point shots you can make…. It’s hard enough, when your off-hand is in perfect position, you have good follow through, and rotation… Much harder if your off-hand is not in it’s normal position – as Mike James’ off hand was below and to the right of his shooting hand on the follow through… because of the contact.
It was a foul….
Now whether regular referees would call it in a regular season game is a whole different argument……

I said it didn’t affect the shot that much. It wasn’t his shooting arm – and he hadn’t even jumped yet, meaning he wasn’t in the flow of his shot. It’s one thing to have your off-elbow grazed when you’re in the middle of your shot or at the peak of your jump, but he hadn’t even jumped yet, and wouldn’t have gotten anything decent over Smith (or whoever that was) anyways. I guess, any contact, even on the off-hand arm or hand while someone is shooting (although was just beginning to shoot), is technically a foul. I just hate rewarding people with bad plays, on shots that would not have gone in anyways.
Like others, I don’t care about the W or L in this preseason game, but I know if it were a regular season game, and such a thing happened against the Wizards, I’d be furious. It was quite silly.

I used to play against a guy that would poke you in the stomach when you shot…. Another guy used to yell obscenities just before you released the ball. I once saw a guy deliberately undercut a player during a jump shot – got called for a foul – but the rest of the game, he faked the same move on that shooter every shot… The guy didn’t hit another shot that day.
Point is, you get hit, ANYWHERE – during your shooting motion, and it’s a distraction – that’s why it’s a foul.
Now you can argue that it’s a “tick-tack” foul all you want – you can argue that you THINK Mike James wouldn’t have hit that shot anyway…. you can argue all you want that it’s “rewarding” a bad play….
The fact remains that it is a foul – and not just technically a foul, but in reality, it’s a foul….

As I said elsewhere
The shame lies not with the ref for calling the foul, but with the player for committing such a stupid foul against a jumpshooter who was well defended and hurrying to get a desperation shot off.
i actually think this is pretty interesting
because obviously, this is not something that gets called by regular NBA refs, traditionally. BUT – should it be? i mean, players have known in the past that they could probably get away with those kinds of plays at the end of games. and it is possible that those things CAN have an effect on shots. but by the letter of the law, it IS a foul.
Obviously, I don’t care about this specific play – they lose by 1 to philly preseason, don’t really care.
but the issue of refs call things that are kind of a grey area is interesting to me.
