Oberto still likely will be the first option at center off the bench with JaVale McGee the third option and used here in various situations. McGee has been struggling with some fatigue late in practices, which has caused him to lose some mental focus late, Saunders said.
"That's his biggest thing, you know, being able to fight through getting tired," Saunders said of McGee. "As a young player, I'm sure he's being overwhelmed a little bit. He's had three coaches, he's learning a new system. So what he learned last year, he's learning all new things. Older players have seen it, from being on other teams or from being in the league, but younger players have to learn it."
McGee still will be called upon because the Wizards want to save Oberto some for the postseason, Saunders said.
"You have the idea that he was going to be the guy that's going to help us playoff time, so you don't want to try to wear out a guy like that if you can avoid it."
But McGee still has some learning to do, which Saunders expects him to do both by watching and playing. There's no chance the Wizards send him down to the D-League, however, because they believe he can still help them right now in certain situations.

I'm going to be writing more about this later
Safe to say JaVale still has a lot of developing to do in the eyes of the coaches.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Music to my ears

Yes; it’s trial by fire time
Which part?
That those who coach the team seem to feel that McGee is not yet ready for prime time?
Or that they will go with a more reliable veteran who might sooner help with overall team defense/hustle/focus first?

Not arguing with the coaches. Just wishing McGee was ready as I’m not super confident in Oberto and would love for Mcgee to be a solid player this year. So I guess I don’t like the fact that McGee isn’t ready and/or isn’t percieved to be ready by the coaches.
McGee is like R. Kelly
His mind is telling you no, but his body is telling you yea (via R. Kelly’s ‘bump n grind’)
Basically, while he physically looks great on the floor, blocking shots, snagging rebounds with his helicopter arms, etc … he just might not be as mentally prepared/mature as he needs to be. … and that’s something that coaches are much better at picking up on than fans, media, etc…
I’m with you in a bit of disappointment that he’s not “ready” …but he’s also just in his second year and only 21.
During media day, Brendan Haywood said that he didn’t “get it” until his fourth year in the league … so, I think we’ll just need to practice some patience with him and how the coaching staff is handling him in this instance.
I have a feeling that you will like Oberto and his hustle.

Wasn’t saying I was shocked he wasn’t ready I’m just a McGee booster(in the long term sense) so it would have been nice to hear he had it. Same for every young guy I guess. Hasn’t changed my view of McGee long term.

I gotcha ...
But it’s kinda what I expected.

Am the only person who hates the idea of McGee not being our main backup C?
He looked good enough last year and most of his advanced metrics were pretty nice. I’d rather have Oberto play Pecherov minutes than Javale.
Me too if for no other reason than for the sake of his improvement
but I’m willing to give Flip and Oberto the benefit of the doubt for now.

No
It is great that Oberto will play ahead of Vale. Oberto is more savy and reliable. I think this is best for McGee also. If he can earn more playing time as season goes. Hopefully becoming a difference maker by all star break or play off time.

Pretty much what I expected, and I'm OK with it.
As long as Flip isn’t so stuck in his ways (EJ-style) and actually lets McGee earn his minutes.
