Dave Johnson is reporting that Gilbert Arenas is out tonight due to flu-like symptoms. I'm worried he caught it from LeBron and the Cavs. Atlanta seems like they've got their full crew together, so this should be an interesting preseason test against a team the Wizards will likely be competing for playoff positioning all season.
I'm excited to figure out how much the return of Brendan Haywood helps the defense. The Wizards' defense hasn't shown all that much improvement in the preseason thus far, but obviously having no Haywood since the Dallas game is a HUGE caveat. Atlanta is a good team with a decent, if ugly-looking offense, so this should be a good test to see where that defense is at. It's also good because Atlanta has some three-point shooters like Bibby, Johnson, Williams and Jamal Crawford off the bench. This will be a test for the three-point defense as well.
Also, let's hope for more Nick Young tonight. He hasn't shot well, but there is still time left for him to wrestle that starting shooting guard away from either Mike Miller or DeShawn Stevenson.
This is an open game thread, so let's hope that nothing can stop us!
GO WIZARDS!

By the way
Anyone else see this tweet?
Apparently Dave Hopla’s working with the Raptors informally.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Yikes
Michael Lee says Gilbert Arenas AND Mike Miller have the flu, and Arenas won’t play tomorrow against Philly (no Gilbert/EJ reunion).
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
No
And a good thing, we’re getting killed.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
Looking like it
I can’t even get the radio feed today. Not worried, but I didn’t need the reminder of the team without Arenas.
We suck at defending the three
It’s official. We still do.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
"No offensive rhythm"
I know that Johnson and Consor are talking about how Flip isn’t running a lot of plays since we play the Hawks in reg. season game 2 …. but still, this is not good to hear.

Take it with a grain of salt?
I haven’t been listening, but from the box score it looked like the wizards were using a pretty abysmal line and backcourt, and the hawks were starting their regular unit.
No Arenas, Miller or Jamison
And Atlanta’s totally healthy.

javale mcgee did not show up tonight
that kid is so immature, he spent all the warmups dribbling between his legs and chucking threes. He and nick are bad influences on each other, blatche seems to be making an effort, mcgee and nick seem to want to merely change from the three stooges to dumb and dumber. I’m a javale fan but sometimes I wonder where’s the heart. I know its preseason but damn, maybe once nick goes in a season or two mcgee will grow up. I’m mad because I’m at the game in my wizards hoody and well didn’t pick a good one to come to, although I see them again in 11 days.

that's interesting -
i lost the WJFK radio stream so didn’t really hear what was going on. It does seem that JaVale still just goes for highlight plays, on offense or defense. It does worry me that he doesn’t seem to have matured basketball-wise. It doesn’t help, I think, that b’ball writers say he’s a monster waiting to happen, or even that he got invited to USA B’ball. That might actually work against him.
I wonder if extensive pine time will open either his or Nick’s eyes.

He got extensive pine last year though
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.
i know - just thinking that (hopefully) Flip doesn't HAVE to play him
so using minutes is one of his main ways of rewarding hard work and discipline.

I have to disagree...
I see JaVale working very hard on the court. He may not know a lot yet, but I don’t see him being lackadaisical during games. I can’t speak to warmups or practice, but when he’s on the court, he’s working, from what I can tell.
I will say...
That I’ve never seen a player get 7 offensive rebounds and no defensive boards. That’s extremely weird. How does that even happen?
yeah i guess i could save my skepticism
until i actually see a few regular season games. but i do worry about his aspirations of stardom getting ahead of his actual skills and consistency.

From Mike Lee's twitter feed:
MrMichaelLee At least somebody is into this game for Washington. Flip just got a T. When Mo Evans missed the tech, Flip said, “Ball don’t lie.”
MrMichaelLee When Joe Smith miss both FTs, Flip said, “Ball really, really, really don’t lie!” Sam Cassell almost fell from his seat.
love that
Coach Winters: Mississippi State's offensive set. 2nd & 2 on our own 24, what defensive set might we call?
Alvin Mack: Eagle Zipper Hero, unless the setback shifts into the I.
Coach Winters: Good..[clicks to next slide], third and seven?

Haywood
should get more touches. He is the most traditional post player we have and he is capable enough on offense. I think he had 1 shot in the first half.
