Weird game

Let's review:

  • Nick Young and Oleksiy Pecherov combined to go 14 of 19 (73.6%) from the field and scored 37 points.
  • Caron Butler was 1 of 8 (12.5%) from the field tonight and scored 2 points.
  • In a game that had a double-digit deficit for most of the game, JaVale McGee logged 0 minutes.
  • Ed Tapscott pulled out a page from the Mike Brown book of coaching and got himself ejected about midway through the fourth quarter.  Based on how quickly he was ejected, I'm guessing he's learned the magic word to say to get tossed.
  • Larry Hughes was booed by Chicago fans for not shooting.

I put this in a previous post

But I thought it was worth mentioning again…

Tapscott kept McGee out of the game so he could reward "veteran" Etan Thomas with 11 minutes so he could score 0 points, grab 0 rebounds, block 0 shots, assist on 0 baskets, and get 0 steals.

Tapscott kept McGee out of the game so he could reward "veteran" scoring machine, (and beast on the boards) Darius Songaila with 19 minutes so he could score 4 points, grab 4 whole rebounds, and block 0 shots.

Once Blatche was taken out, the Chicago Bulls lined up at the top of the key to take turns driving down the middle of the lane, knowing there was no one inside to stop them. Arguments ensued over who was in line first….

Tyrus Thomas continually took running starts from the half-court line to sky for Offensive rebounds, knowing that no one on the Wizards would dare put a body on him. Many times he just flew past the rim, but it was OK, because one of his teammates would grab the rebound anyway.

seriously -

what in the hell is the reason mcgee didn’t play? there is nothing anyone associated with the team that can justify this.
as you say rook, there was a dunk/lay-up line, at least in the 1st half that i saw, going down the lane.

that is my breaking point. there is something else going on here, and tapscott’s not being honest about it.

Fire Him

You heard me.

I’m already sick of Tapscott and his rash decision-making.

Here are some positive takeaways from the game

1) The Wizards played all-star quality defense in the first half. All-star game quality.

2) The Wizards did not miss a free throw in the first half

javale mcgee didn’t miss a shot
javale mcgee had 0 turnovers

Yeah

They really should have gotten one of us the ball more in the last few minutes.

Maybe Tapscott is going to get himself ejected early every game

so he doesn’t have to watch the mess that is this team. Go pech though!

Remember how long it took Haywood to develop

because of Eddie Jordan’s coaching feuds, spontaneous motivational DNPs, and the make-believe competition with Etan Thomas , when any other Coach/GM/Exec in the league would not have needed this trial-by-fire to know that hands-down Haywood was the better center. Until 07-08, his seventh year in the league when the guy was 27 years old, even though Haywood had shown his ability for a 10 ppg and 7 rpg in 30 mpg in 04-05.
We are going through the same thing now with McGee, a guy who clearly demonstrated his potential the first half of his rookie season, and yet is being delayed because somehow it isn’t yet clear to Tapscott that he is sooooooo much better than Thomas or Songaila at the center position, or that given that McGee’s soon to be 21 while Thomas is averaging 3.2 ppg and 2.5 rpg in 12 mins at the age of 30, and soon-to-be-31 Songaila is physically (6’9") and skillsetilly can’t play center , oh and his career year in 03-04 logged 9ppg 4pg in 22 mpg (wowsa).
So McGee’s indisputably better than either those two and is 10 years younger, yet somehow he’s getting DNPs. Deja vu all over again.
Oh and anybody remember Ivans extensive reporting the past several seasons that one of the reasons the Wizards can’t make big moves is because no team wants Thomas or his contract (even in pre-2010 Lebron FA era of the in-demand large expiring contract)

Love that phrase – I’m using that from now on…

One other question

Would y’all have a problem playing Butler and Jamison 25-30 mpg? My reasoning is the more PT for the young guys the better, and that there is no reason to run those beaten-up guys (always some nagging injury with them, but the play through because they are awesome guys) into the ground in a lost season.
And with the way Butler’s playing right now, don’t yall think hes probably still injured, in which case why are we rushing our allstar back from injury to play in a lost season, instead of excessively giving Antawn and Butler whatever time off they need to prevent weardown or heal from nagging injury in this lost season, so that they are firing on all cylinders next year, and not getting surgery in July and missing the first months of the season and/or playing at less than 100% because of injury next season (which they’ve done in the past)

Nah, I'm not there

My issue is that we shouldn’t even be parsing the team down into “veterans” vs. “young guys.” It should be about whether you can play, regardless of age. And Butler and Jamison are playing and playing well (excepting Butler’s recent struggles).

The issue is when you give vets who can’t play preferential treatment just because they are vets.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Salt on the wound

Tapscott after last night’s game on playing Pech:
“When you’re struggling sometimes you just reach for a straw,” Tapscott said. "That was actually Randy Ayers. He said: why not give Pech a shot, maybe he can make a shot and I said okay.*

*Straw Unreached For- Javale McGee has four straight DNPs

My new theory

Ok – so I’ve been thinking. Why is Ed Tapscott so determined to play the “veterans” instead of the Youngsters? Why play the vets when the results are disasterous (like a 7-28 record). Why play the vets even when the games are no longer in doubt (20+ point defecits). Why not change things up and give the young guys some serious run? Why hinder the development of young, talented players in a lost season?

The only answers I can come up with are:

1. Tapscott is really, really stupid. (not likely)
2. Ernie Grunfeld told Tap how to run the team, because he wants to showcase the vets.

So why bench McGee completely? Why limit Young’s minutes?
Maybe to hide them?

Perhaps Ernie has seen the potential in McGee and Young….. and wants to make a trade with a Veteran, or a combination of veterans and youngsters. In which case, you don’t want the opposing GM to ask for your best young big man, or your future 20ppg shooting guard to be thrown in to the trade… so you tell Taps to play McGuire, Blatche, Songaila, Thomas, James, and even Pecherov. Play the guys you want to showcase.
Hide the guys you want to keep.

It’s the only logical explanation I can come up with.

By the way

Young got 27 minutes last night…… watch for his minutes to be drastically cut tonight against Charlotte.

Can’t have him scoring 20+ points every night now, can we?

I have a new logical explanation

Ernie is behind all of this. He believes in his vets and not in his rookies. Looking at his teams in the past, young guys often got the boot as far as playing time.

If so, I’d be quite disappointed. But I’m starting to worry that’s the case.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

“When you’re struggling sometimes you just reach for a straw,” Tapscott said. "That was actually Randy Ayers. He said: why not give Pech a shot, maybe he can make a shot and I said okay.

Then he made some shots, scored 9 points, and was immediately pulled from the game at the 9-minute mark and was never seen again….

The team is down 12
You got a guy that’s hot
He can shoot (and make) 3-pointers
He just scored 9 points in a little over 4 minutes
He drew 3 fouls on the opposition and hit ALL his Free Throws
Did I mention that your team is down 12 ?
SO, your coaching philosophy is to pull him with 9 minutes to go, and bench him?

Not that I’m saying that Pecherov is the savior of the team; but come on… Basic coaching – play the guys that are producing.

Good job Nicky...

I don’t know about Tap, but you have definitely made it into MY Palace of Good Play.
