"If you look at Caron, Antawn and Mike James, they are getting 35, 37, 38 minutes, so I'm not overly concerned with putting young guys in just to put young guys in. We're trying to give them a chance to grow up and learn to play, but not at the expense of winning basketball games. So they have to contribute."

"I told those guys, 'This is a meritocracy,' " Tapscott said. "I tell them, 'You get what you merit. Everything is earned in this league. You earn veteran status, you earn veteran minutes. There are no grants coming into this league and the other thing is, you can't transfer in the NBA. So I you're not happy about it, you'll have to earn your minutes.' "
Ed Tapscott, via the Post. I'm going to leave these out there for discussion for now. Needless to say, these lines make me very mad.

What is Tapscott's problem?
Do the veterans (obviously not counting Jamison and Butler) really deserve to be defended so much? The Wizards are 7-27; this isn’t some team that’s on the cusp of rattling off several wins in a row. It’s not one group’s fault or the other because, for the most part, they’ve all contributed to the awful start. But that doesn’t mean that McGee should be punished because he’s not a veteran. He’s a rookie, and he’s played better than Thomas, so shouldn’t he be getting Thomas’s minutes? And why was Stevenson playing over ANYONE on the Wizards’ roster with the way he played to start the season? He was horrible; he wasn’t earning his minutes.
I really don’t understand how the Wizards play sometimes. Instead of worrying about other team’s matchups and who’s doing what, maybe they should just try to do what they want and make other teams adjust for once. Put a lineup of Crittenton, Young, McGuire, Blatche, and McGee out there once in a while — see what the hell happens. Will they do poorly? It’s possible, but let them get a chance. The organization needs to find out who can play on this team, and if Arenas ever comes back, they’ll need to know who can and can’t compliment the big three in the near future.
i'd love to see that young line up
for a few minutes a game. i think those guys would be excited to play together and prove a point.
granted, they might suck royally, but they’d do it with passion and hunger.

If Tap wasn’t the interim already I’d say he should be fired just for these comments. This can’t possibly be what Grunfeld wanted when he put Tap in there, can it?

meritocracy
And none of the “press” called him on that? Where are the hard questions?
With a team record of 7-27, there should be some very hard questions – and even harder follow-up questions when the first answer is a cliche filled, “puddle of muck”.
Like: What do you mean “meritocracy”? Do you mean that players that are not performing, like Etan Thomas, DeShawn Stevenson and Darius Songaila will be replaced with players that have performed when given minutes….. Like Nick Young, Javaris Crittenton and JaVale McGee?
And when he says something like:
“We’re trying to give them a chance to grow up and learn to play, but not at the expense of winning basketball games. So they have to contribute.”
Why wasn’t there a follow up question like: Then are the young guys, who have better stats, higher plus/minus numbers and seem to bring more energy; Why are they benched for 3 games if they take one bad shot?
Where’s that question?

Rook you said it perfectly
And its this issue that makes watching Wizards games so difficult for me. These young players give me hope for the future and when this team is 7-27, that’s all I’ve got. This is season is in the trash can, I wish the coaches and front office would figure this out and start working on 2009-10!
I am still watching a lot of the NBA, but I am relying a lot on this site to tell me what happens with the Wizards. At this point I am zeroing in on seeing as much of Blake Griffin, James Harden and Greg Monroe as I can to figure out which I one I really want in the June draft. If only I could see some of Ricky Rubio’s games too (I don’t get NBA TV which I imagine is the only outlet to see his games).

I hold to my "Fire Him" statement
This is stupid. Meritocracy? Not at the expense of winning games? Dude is panicked and clearly out of his element. I’m not asking him to win, I’m asking him to babysit. This shit ain’t rocket sceince. Hire a coach with experience leading awful teams in rebuilding mode, there are plenty of those.
Also, JaVale’s clearly been affected by the treatment. Remember his first couple games, when he was showing potential, but was fumbling with the ball and overthinking it on those dunks? And remember how then he started developing some confidence and (dare I say it) swagger? He was still making rookie mistakes, but way less of the fumble-the-ball variety. Now he’s back to doing so. And who can blame him for overthinking it so much?
Honestly, if we’re keeping Tap, JaVale should be sent to the D-league. At least give the guy some in-game experience this season. And that would be insane, I know, 30-minutes-a-night starter to D-league in the space of two months. But that’s how out-of-his-depth Tapscott is. It’s incompetent, plain and simple.
