Wizards run out of gas against Orlando

I was all ready to unleash an epic rant about this team, but then we actually kept things somewhat close.  So that rant will come tomorrow.

I don't know what's more impressive.  Six points in a quarter, or only losing by nine despite that.

Post-game comments go here for now.  I'll write something up tomorrow.

Do You Still Have the Energy to Rant About This Team?

I thought about ranting over this team some more a week or so ago, but what is the point really? I can no longer summon the fire to be angry at this team any more. It no longer surprises me at how badly this team can play.

On the other hand, like you said, this team didn’t give up and kept it close to the very end. Somebody should have called the fire department, because Caron Butler almost set the arena ablaze in the second half. And I thought that the defense played really well, too. Despite the miserable second quarter, the Wiz managed to hold Orlando to only 16 points, so it wasn’t as if they were shooting the lights out either (credit the defense, at least some). There were some positives to look at as the Wizards now enter an easy part of the schedule (finally!).

That damn shot over the backboard was the topper.

Unbelievable…..or court, Caron did lack some energy, if you will, in defending Turkoglu……he left him wide open at the top of the arc that one time……I was like, “What on earth are you doing?”

Yeah but

do we have any idea why he didn’t start?

Was it disciplinary? If so, I’m not going to second guess that.

Ivan said
I did a little asking around after Tapscott let us know about an hour before tip but wasn’t able to find out what exactly “team matter” means but I hear that it’s related to the way Blatche reacted after coming out of the game on Sunday against Cleveland.

Link.

I can’t think of too many things that could have been said that merited a benching rather than a sit-down meeting, public scolding, fine or whatnot. How many times do we have to see that benching isn’t a good tactic to motivate a player? Particularly Blatche. And if you wanted to send a message to the team, how does making it more difficult for you to win help?

This is the NBA, not a college program.

Mike Jones says
Ed Tapscott said he’ll decide tomorrow weather or not Andray Blatche returns to the starting lineup. Ed stuck to the “team matter” line, but it’s safe to assume that team matter involves Sunday’s outburst from Blatche, where late in the game, Tap pulled him and Andray threw a tantrum, yelling at the coach for the decision, and teammates had to tell the fourth-year big man, who has done nothing to deserve being able to argue for more playing time, to shut up. When asked if that was the reason for Blatche’s benching, Ed smiled, took a deep breath and said “It is a team matter.”

Link

Again- Until I know what Andray said, specifically, I’ll have to remain neutral….

As a Coach, you cannot have your players running the show. Perhaps the discipline could have been done differently – a meeting with Tapscott & Grunfeld to let Blatche know what will and will not be tolerated…. A substantial fine…. or, benching…

WTF

“who has done nothing to deserve being able to argue for more playing time?”

Has Mike seen the way he’s played since Taps’ hiring?

yeah that line is right on -

other than the fact that it’s 100% incorrect. is MJ watching? blatche has done more or less everything that could be expected to earn more minutes – rebounded, effort on D, passed well, even shown some intensity.
WTF indeed, mike jones – if that IS your real name…

I didn't say I agreed with Mike....

Actually, I agree with you Prada, that Blatche has been playing with much more intensity, and with more consistency since Tapscott replaced Jordan. Perhaps this new found “intensity” boiled over when he was taken out against Cleveland… I sure hope that’s it – because it would prove that Andray has taken that next step – that he cares about winning, and he feels he can help the team win.

That said – I still maintain that we don’t know the whole story about Blatche’s “tirade” and his subsequent removal from the starting lineup. We only have bits and pieces… hearsay, innuendo, partial reporting and partial facts.

And by the way

If Blatche threw a “tantrum” and got benched from starting – but still played 25 minutes; you gotta wonder what McGee did to deserve his punishment.

I don't care

About how well Andray has been playing….or if his presence may or may not lead to winning.

If he is acting a fool, then they should let him know.

I’m sure there have been plenty of sit-down meetings, etc. during Blatche’s tumultuous tenure as a Wizard…..sometimes a player will only respond to a decrease in playing time (or losing pride in not starting).

I don’t know what Blatche said….don’t necessarily care to know (although surely curious)…but I gotta side with Tap on this one.

I can see that side of it, sure.

but blatche has finally showed some solid play consistently as a starter, he’s clearly kind of fragile in the psyche, so i would hate for a spat over being pulled to set him back again. he sure looked out of it when he came in last night.
look – i know this is absurd in the overall sense to have to kind of baby an adult who’s got a great job and all of that, but, be smart, know your personnel, and act accordingly, and remember that there is room for all types in the palace of good play.

Meh....

Blatche doesn’t need a benching to look “out of it”

oh yeah he can be out of it without that

but compared to how he looked recently, as a starter, he was way off when he came in.

I'm not anti-discipline

I’m anti-benching-as-discipline. Particularly with Blatche.

sometimes a player will only respond to a decrease in playing time (or losing pride in not starting).

That line hasn’t worked with him. Eddie’s been yanking and benching him ever since he got here. Has that really worked in any way, shape or form?

Anyway, this whole issue is dominating my recap, so I’ll talk about it more there.

yanking and benching him

Has not helped with Blatche…
Has not helped with Young….
Has not helped with McGee….

I still think there needs to be some sort of consequence.

So what discipline would you have enacted?

McGee?

wtf still no explanation. Pity the young Wizards who emerge unconfident and undeveloped from our system of coach-player psychological warfare. I mean how many times can you move a player from starter to bench to DNP in the same year. Damnit!

Having Mercy?

Yea, but this is going to happen with a rookie. I’m afraid that having to go against Dwight Howard might have killed McGee’s confidence even more….well not really.

I’m really not frustrated with him not playing…..we still got a lotta season left and he’ll get his chances.

And

we should take heart from any positives that we can take from games against the top teams in the Association.

The Wizards played pretty good defense against an Orlando team that usually just kills them inside and outside.

On a night when Antawn Jamison shot poorly (5-17) and the Wizards scored only 6 points in the 2nd Quarter – they still made it a game, coming within 3 points with a little over a minute left.

Nick Young, Crittenton and McGuire all played significant minutes.

2nd Quarter

was where the Wizards lost the game…. and to be perfectly honest, it was Blatche and Young that were the culprits; going 2 for 8 with 3 turn overs in the Quarter.

Of course, blame could be spread around to the whole team, as 9 players played in the 2nd Quarter, and with Blatche and Young going 2-8, the rest of the team went 0-9 with 4 more Turn Overs.

For most of the period, Butler and Jamison were not on the floor at the same time….

And it should have been worse....

Save for Orlando kept turning the ball over too.

No one seems to be mentioning

Mike James’s complete inability to guard Jameer Nelson in the fourth quarter. The low scoring in the 2nd quarter may have cost us the game, but his lack of D cost us our comeback.

Oh god yes....

However, they were running a ton of screens for Nelson.

What exactly was the plan for team defense there?

Ok, you are right.

But there were plenty of times when Nelson didn’t even need the a screen and just went right by him.
