Open thread: Regular season game 43 vs. Portland Trailblazers
Washington Wizards at Portland Trail Blazers, Jan 24, 2009 10:00 PM EST
We conclude our four-game roadie in Portland tonight for our final meeting with the young Trailblazers. Last time we played them, we fought hard and came up just short in a six-point loss that, surprise surprise, featured crappy veterans playing down the stretch. I don't think we're going to match that performance tonight.
Anyway, game's at 10 eastern time since we're out West. With the game being at that time, and with me being a college student, I'll probably catch this on delay tomorrow. For all who are watching, make the jump like Rod Strickland (I really wanted to use that line) and comment away.
GO WIZARDS!

But sometimes the play of the youth is....
more sickenin’ than how Rod used to make ’em jump.

I think so
He’s on my fantasy team and he’s got the little red cross beside his name. I’m not sure what his injury is, but it’s something.

Grade 1
Not sure what that means, but it doesn’t sound good.

I heard he's weak on defense
at least that’s what the Republicans say.
Oh yeah
Portland is stockpiling young players like it’s Y2K.

I just love how the Wizards are building for the future
playing all those guys they have high hopes for in the future.
Hopefully someone will be stupid enough to trade us some more mid-level , low talent, veteran players for our rookies and 2nd year players …. So we can continue to watch these “veterans” that really know how to play basketball – - – get off to such wonderful fast starts to these games.

It'll be even "better" when Stevenson returns
I can’t wait for the James, Stevenson, Butler, Jamison, Songaila lineup. Terrible.
Deshawn going through a full shoot around -
is not what I call good news. I don’t want to see him back on court any time soon
Well
It looks like our starters are better than Portland’s 2nd unit….
I wonder when Tapscott will bring in his bench?
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Well
Portland’s got a lot of tall guys, so they’re probably a bad match up for McGee.
It's not so much the size
Portland just has guys, so they must be a mis-match for McGee.

I love how...
Jamison gets destroyed by Alridge on two or three plays in a row, and Eddie’s reaction…is to take out Blatche and put in Song at the 5.
Hmmm. Wonder what would’ve happened if it was McGee who got schooled in exactly the same way….
I like Songaila at the 4
He can body Aldridge…. keep him out of the lane.

Boy, these veterans are certainly executing on offense tonight!!
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
As a non-veteran, he cannot enter the "palace of good play"
He has to wait until next year…. when he will be a 3-year veteran……..
THEN, he can play in the games; get substantial minutes; get regular rotation minutes; not get jerked out for mistakes…
Matter of fact, he can suck next year and he will play.

Yeah, Dixon
Tapscott found out that he was older than Nick Young, so had to get him some pt.
Fist 1-3
must mean , dribble the shot clock down to 3 seconds, and shoot an air ball on a long 3-pointer,
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
So...
We know that “Fist-1-3” is the play that calls for Caron to shoot up a wild three that airballs. Glad we established that.
Oden has a double-double already
Awesome.
Bullets Forever: A blog dedicated to the Washington Wizards with analysis, commentary, and more YouTube videos than your eyes can handle.
I was hoping Fist 1-3 meant...
That Mike James would punch someone. That would probably be our best shot at scoring.

Yeah ................ 31 is much better than a Season-Low 30 points for a Half...
Boy, these veterans have really been filling it up this half.
Heaven forbid we put in a prolific scorer like Young to try to score some points.

to get in Tapscott’s dogh……uh …. “dungeon of poopy play”?

You mean he actually has to do something?
There’s no rhyme or reason to this team besides playing the veterans needless minutes
I'm not sure
Young was on fire before the west coast road trip, and then things just went south. I guess the point is: Don’t shoot 2-9 against Golden State or else you’ll get 10 minutes the next game. I’m confused.
I think I figured it out...
Starting with the Toronto game on January 7th – Tapscott gave Nick Young consistent minutes.
He averaged 29 minutes per game for 7 consecutive games – and averaged 19 points per game.
7 games…. The Wizards went 1-6…..
Now he’s out of the rotation.
Remember Tapscott’s thing about “every 7 games” ?
That’s gotta be it,……………..right?
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Mike James shot 2-9 in the Golden State game too...
OH yeah – I forgot…
Mike James is a veteran.

So...
Apparently Ovie had some kind of amazing trick shot tonight. I’m intrigued.

Via Capitals Insider:
About 8 minutes in is Ovechkin. I need to start following the Caps.
Yeah you need to start following the caps
they’re the only good team left in DC
rockin' the crab dribble since 2009
Oden might be a Dupont Circle type of fellow (in bed)
and he can sure bang down low on a basketball court.
Jamison has a hole in his breadbasket

What kind of defense is this?
Sergio Rodriguez drives a little bit and then kicks to a wide open shooter?
So
Will the Wiz crack 60 tonight?

Boy, those vets...
That Taps clings to so pathetically are really getting it done tonight. The playoffs are coming clearly into view now…
Alley Oop to Oden
I remember when a Wizard’s player used to do those….. until he was benched.

Songaila
His positional defense isn’t very useful if Oden is throwing down alley-oops.

If you want to do a Roy for Pecherov deal
We’re open to ideas. Oleksiy is a valuable contributor, but I think Brandon fella is going to develop into a solid role player.

They needed someone to keep that end-of-the-bench seat warm
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Has anyone noticed whether he keeps to himself on the bench...
Or if he talks to his teammates? I remember in Summer League he talked to some assistant coach the whole time, didn’t say a word to any of his teammates. If he’s been on the team two years and hasn’t made any friends on the team, that doesn’t bode well for him.

Was there ever...
Any doubt that Jamison would start the 4th? Or that McGee would be nowhere to be seen? Or Crit? Or Pech?
It's obvious
that continually playing the veterans big minutes, and providing minimum and inconsistent minutes for any player with less than 4-years experience is really paying off for the Wizards.
They are accomplishing EXACTLY what they want to do – They are tanking the season, without seeming like they’re tanking.
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Blatche and McGuire have been getting heavy and inconsistent minutes. Tapscott’s handling of Young and McGee is inexcusable, but your reducing the problem to veterans versus young players is an oversimplification.
Yeah - because those vets certainly are gettin it done....
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
Oversimplification?
Ok…. Maybe you’re right. Maybe it’s more complex than I’m making it seem.
Then, why has Nick Young, who is the 4th leading scorer on the team only gotten 11, 19 and 7 minutes in the last 3 games – when in the previous 7, he was averaging 19 points per game?
Explain to me the complex set of circumstances that would cause the Coaching staff to jerk the minutes around on arguably the third best healthy player on the current roster?
What is it that I’m not understanding about what I consider the idiocy of playing both Jamison and Butler close to 40 minutes apiece in a blow out loss?
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
No - I see your point
BUT you cannot convince me that the Wizards will win more games by playing the veterans heavily – and playing the youngsters inconsistently.
I actually believe that you could play ALL of the young guys (Crittenton, Young, McGee, Blatche and McGuire) – and win more games …
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
I did not say the Wizards will win more games by playing veterans heavily. I said that Tapscott has played some rookies heavily, while unjustifiably not playing others heavily. Thus the problem is not Tapscott’s attitude towards all rookies, but Tapscott’s attitude toward Young and McGee, and to a lesser extent, Critt and Pech.
Stop creating strawmen.
1. Tap has not played ANY rookies heavily…
2. Blatche is a 4-year VETERAN – and along with Songaila is Tap’s only reason NOT TO PLAY McGee.
3. McGuire has received steady starter minutes – but can we be sure that will continue? The track record says NO.
4. strawmen? uh…….ok
5. When he was healthy, Tap played “veteran” Etan effing Thomas
6. Even when he was not healthy, Tap played “veteran” Stevenson
Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......
3 more turn overs - and Butler will have his triple double

Can't even do that right . . .
They were down by a touchdown and 2 field goals with a minute left, and they were still trapping with their starters. WTF?! Did they still think they were going to win the game?!

Can't we just hire some random highschool coach
to the run the team for the rest of year? All we need is an interim coach that’s not a cocky assclown
by morethesamewiz on Jan 25, 2009 12:28 AM EST reply actions
Wiz should just fire the interim coach and hire a real interim coach
Ed Tapscott is coaching for wins to audition for a real head coaching gig. Do what the Blazers did when they fired Mo Cheeks. They hired Kevin Prtichard as the interim coach who had zero coaching experience to play the youngsters and build for the future.
Playing Dixon, McGruire, and Songalia big minutes is about the worst thing you could do. I agree with you all.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
Minutes Watch
Butler played 38 and a half minutes
Blatche played 35 and a half minutes
Taser played 35 minutes
Jamison played just under 33 minutes
Songaila played just under 28 minutes
Mike James played 27 and a half minutes
Juan Dixon, yes, Juan Dixon, played just under 24 minutes
NY played 7 and a half minutes
Crittenton and McGee each played just under 6 minutes.
Blazer fan in DC
who has paid to see a half dozen Wiz games and everything televised.
I agree with the general sentiment about playing the young guys, especially Nick Young, but also Crittenton and McGee. I like all three alot and can’t imagine why they don’t each get at least 15 minutes a game. I cringe when I see Mike James starting and Juan Dixon playing heavy minutes. Play the youngsters with the starters to mature them faster.
On another note, any good bars with the NBA package? Only one place I can find in my neighborhood (Adams Morgan) – all the other places dropped it this year.

he was a punk in the local bars. Back in the day i unknowingly pulled a move on a girl he liked… he gave me the stink eye but uncle Cliffy (Robinson) talked him down. Probably told Rod that he had more to lose than i did if it came to blows.

best of luck for the rest of the season.
