Open thread: Regular season game 43 vs. Portland Trailblazers

Washington Wizards at Portland Trail Blazers, Jan 24, 2009 10:00 PM EST

630199_medium

We conclude our four-game roadie in Portland tonight for our final meeting with the young Trailblazers.  Last time we played them, we fought hard and came up just short in a six-point loss that, surprise surprise, featured crappy veterans playing down the stretch.  I don't think we're going to match that performance tonight.

Anyway, game's at 10 eastern time since we're out West.  With the game being at that time, and with me being a college student, I'll probably catch this on delay tomorrow.  For all who are watching, make the jump like Rod Strickland (I really wanted to use that line) and comment away.

GO WIZARDS!

I think so

He’s on my fantasy team and he’s got the little red cross beside his name. I’m not sure what his injury is, but it’s something.

heartbreaking for we Blazer fans, but we are getting a chance to take a better look at Rodriguez and Bayless.

I just love how the Wizards are building for the future

playing all those guys they have high hopes for in the future.

Hopefully someone will be stupid enough to trade us some more mid-level , low talent, veteran players for our rookies and 2nd year players …. So we can continue to watch these “veterans” that really know how to play basketball – - – get off to such wonderful fast starts to these games.

You mean he actually has to do something?

There’s no rhyme or reason to this team besides playing the veterans needless minutes

by ooba on Jan 24, 2009 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure

Young was on fire before the west coast road trip, and then things just went south. I guess the point is: Don’t shoot 2-9 against Golden State or else you’ll get 10 minutes the next game. I’m confused.

by Matt K. on Jan 24, 2009 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

I think I figured it out...

Starting with the Toronto game on January 7th – Tapscott gave Nick Young consistent minutes.

He averaged 29 minutes per game for 7 consecutive games – and averaged 19 points per game.

7 games…. The Wizards went 1-6…..

Now he’s out of the rotation.

Remember Tapscott’s thing about “every 7 games” ?

That’s gotta be it,……………..right?

Or if he talks to his teammates? I remember in Summer League he talked to some assistant coach the whole time, didn’t say a word to any of his teammates. If he’s been on the team two years and hasn’t made any friends on the team, that doesn’t bode well for him.

by YellaFella on Jan 24, 2009 11:57 PM EST reply actions

It's obvious

that continually playing the veterans big minutes, and providing minimum and inconsistent minutes for any player with less than 4-years experience is really paying off for the Wizards.

They are accomplishing EXACTLY what they want to do – They are tanking the season, without seeming like they’re tanking.

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

by Rook6980 on Jan 25, 2009 12:04 AM EST reply actions

Blatche and McGuire have been getting heavy and inconsistent minutes. Tapscott’s handling of Young and McGee is inexcusable, but your reducing the problem to veterans versus young players is an oversimplification.

by Aldo on Jan 25, 2009 12:10 AM EST up reply actions

Oversimplification?

Ok…. Maybe you’re right. Maybe it’s more complex than I’m making it seem.

Then, why has Nick Young, who is the 4th leading scorer on the team only gotten 11, 19 and 7 minutes in the last 3 games – when in the previous 7, he was averaging 19 points per game?

Explain to me the complex set of circumstances that would cause the Coaching staff to jerk the minutes around on arguably the third best healthy player on the current roster?

What is it that I’m not understanding about what I consider the idiocy of playing both Jamison and Butler close to 40 minutes apiece in a blow out loss?

No - I see your point

BUT you cannot convince me that the Wizards will win more games by playing the veterans heavily – and playing the youngsters inconsistently.

I actually believe that you could play ALL of the young guys (Crittenton, Young, McGee, Blatche and McGuire) – and win more games …

Bullets Forever - where "Dagger ! " happens......

by Rook6980 on Jan 25, 2009 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

I did not say the Wizards will win more games by playing veterans heavily. I said that Tapscott has played some rookies heavily, while unjustifiably not playing others heavily. Thus the problem is not Tapscott’s attitude towards all rookies, but Tapscott’s attitude toward Young and McGee, and to a lesser extent, Critt and Pech.

Stop creating strawmen.

by Aldo on Jan 25, 2009 12:34 AM EST up reply actions

1. Tap has not played ANY rookies heavily…
2. Blatche is a 4-year VETERAN – and along with Songaila is Tap’s only reason NOT TO PLAY McGee.
3. McGuire has received steady starter minutes – but can we be sure that will continue? The track record says NO.
4. strawmen? uh…….ok
5. When he was healthy, Tap played “veteran” Etan effing Thomas
6. Even when he was not healthy, Tap played “veteran” Stevenson

Wiz should just fire the interim coach and hire a real interim coach

Ed Tapscott is coaching for wins to audition for a real head coaching gig. Do what the Blazers did when they fired Mo Cheeks. They hired Kevin Prtichard as the interim coach who had zero coaching experience to play the youngsters and build for the future.

Playing Dixon, McGruire, and Songalia big minutes is about the worst thing you could do. I agree with you all.

who has paid to see a half dozen Wiz games and everything televised.

I agree with the general sentiment about playing the young guys, especially Nick Young, but also Crittenton and McGee. I like all three alot and can’t imagine why they don’t each get at least 15 minutes a game. I cringe when I see Mike James starting and Juan Dixon playing heavy minutes. Play the youngsters with the starters to mature them faster.

On another note, any good bars with the NBA package? Only one place I can find in my neighborhood (Adams Morgan) – all the other places dropped it this year.
