Perhaps as a reward....

For having to put up with Gil’s BS….they’ve already seen how Eddie can lead the team when he’s out.

I'm not upset that we're extending Eddie

I just don’t get the timing. Isn’t this supposed to be the defining year of his tenure?

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Why not now?

Now we, Ivan, Mike etc. don’t talk about him being a lame duck. There’s no luxury tax on a coach, if they have to let him go (god forbid) after this season, it doesn’t really hurt anyone. It’s a smart move.

It hurts Abe Pollin's wallet

And that’s likely enough to keep him aboard no matter what.

That's it though

And that would only be an issue if the team completely wilted this year.

I Just Hope

I just hope that Ernie has the balls to drop Eddie if Eddie doesn’t get us out of the first round again this season. At some point, us Wizards fans need to stop settling for mediocrity and demand a team that can get us back to where we were four seasons ago. If Eddie can’t this season, then no more excuses should be accepted. It should be second round or bust.

Sorry, I don't buy it

Having your star players injured going into the playoffs is not an “excuse”.

I understand (and share) the frustration level, but I think Eddie did a great job under very difficult circumstances last year. Good coaches are hard to find. I wouldn’t just drop one out of frustration.

I will agree that if the team is healthy they should get into the second round or beyond. Does anyone here doubt that would be the case?

I’m not wild about the move either. I’m dubious over Eddie and think he has a lot to prove this coming season, especially with developing some of the young talent that’s here.

There was no need to rush this decision. It could have waited until after the season when the picture was more complete.

Exactly

Maybe they think by picking up the option they are taking the pressure off.

Makes sense

With Arenas’ recent surgury, and the fact that he will be unavailable until at least December/January – I think Management (Ernie Grunfeld) wanted to send a message to the rest of the team that chemistry and continuity are important to the club.

This team has some young and immature players that will be called upon to fill key roles this season. (Brown, Young, Blatche)… There is potential for conflict (Haywood/Thomas). Add in a lame duck coach, and the season could sour quickly

See my post on Dermarr Johnson and “team chemistry”.

Agreed

More distractions we don’t need. I like Eddie, I think it’s a good move.

by MR on Sep 23, 2008 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

good point

i had only been thinking of etan’s return as a bonus, but i had completely overlooked the downside. EJ is definitely going to have his work cut out for him this year, and a nod of support from management is big. i think he built up some credit last year and deserves to see if he can lead the troops again this season.

let’s hope it’s more like last year than two years ago.
