Arenas to miss one month
Editor's Note: Link's here. I'm in utter shock.
According to rotoworld:
Gilbert Arenas underwent a surgical procedure on Wednesday morning that "cleaned out some debris" in his left knee, and hopes to be ready to play at some point in December.

This is ridiculous
I can’t yet tell you whether or to what extent president Ernie Grunfeld and coach Eddie Jordan were prepared for all of this.
Well, that’s a problem.
Arenas, who has undergone two surgeries to repair the left knee in the last two seasons, has been limited during the rehab process all summer and said he has planned all along on not participating in training camp or the preseason
That’s utter b.s…how could he have thought that and not said something earlier.
“I just had some floating debris in there that was slowing me down,” said Arenas, who seemed to be in good spirits. “It was irritating the knee so we decided to go in there and clean it out. This should actually allow me to come back faster.”
Except you had said you’d be ready to pick up a ball in August. What happened?
Shame on Gil, it never should have gotten to this.

Great -
Season hasn’t even started and I’m already depressed. Sometimes I hate being a fan of this team. I don’t understand why Gilbert didn’t get this taken care of sooner. He seems to have a very lackadaisical attitude about this whole thing.

This team will be just fine
Relax. They won plenty of games without Gil last year. This is a six-year deal they signed him to not a 6 week deal. Better to get this taken care of now and miss just one month of the season.
by igetbucketsson on Sep 17, 2008 1:29 PM EDT 0 recs
That's why I'm particularly worried
Seemed to me the general consensus on this blog post-contract was that it was a pretty good deal so long as his knee holds up. If it doesn’t, then Gil’s contract starts to have “Grant Hill” written all over it.
This is, what, the fourth time he’s gone under the knife in two years? I’m seriously concerned that it just is never going to get rehabbed to the point where he can move at full speed.

Along the same lines
Gil’s game is hugely dependent on his speed and quickness. He’s not necessarily a high skill/precision player, rather, he depends on his burst to get to the hoop and to set up his jumpers, and I’ve always been worried that he will have a big drop in production as he ages. If his knee can’t ever be 100% then we are going to have to settle for a Gil that’s about 3/4 of what he once was (which is still borderline allstar material i think, but far from the near superstar he was becoming).
Getting buckets since 2003.

This board is in meltdown.
Everyone just relax. This team will be fine without him for a month or so. It’s a washout. They put saline solution in there to washout his knee. That’s all it was. It was going to be a little while before he was 100. This will help him get closer to 100 sooner.

If it's really just a month
Then yeah, everything will be fine, but based on the way this saga has unfolded thus far, I don’t exactly have much faith in that being the case.

except that he’s established himself as one of the best shooters in the league. If he can resign himself mentally to playing the two, i think he can be a fantastic shooting guard.

Damn Gilbert...
If he says that he planned on missing training camp and preseason games, then he already knew his knee was a problem for a while now. Why did he wait to get the procedure? Why didn’t he just get it the day after he signed his new contract?
by IncandescentRex on Sep 17, 2008 1:30 PM EDT 0 recs
And you wonder why so many pundits say that the Wizards will be no better
Here’s the best player already going to miss time. And what does this mean.
The Wizards will have to develop a rhythm of this team without him (one that will include Butler and Jamison having to play more minutes then we want them to). And by the time they are into a good rhythm without Gilbert, he will return and if he is 100% (a big if) then they will have to spend December (one of the toughest months according to our schedule if memory serves) trying to incorporate him back in. Dammit this is frustrating, I hope its not an omen of things to come.

Chew on this comment
From the team physician:
"After Gilbert’s normal course of rehabilitation was ramped up, he experienced some swelling and discomfort in his knee. A subsequent MRI showed that the knee is structurally sound. The decision was made to perform an arthroscopic lavage procedure, during which a moderate amount of debris was removed after saline solution was washed through the knee. The presence of debris is common with the nature of his previous injury. This was a proactive procedure that will enhance his rehabilitation process."
O….kay.

Randle el had a knee scoped
Either just before or during Redskins camp. He missed a few weeks, but hasn’t missed a game, and aside from punt returns (not a knee issue) looks fine.

Point (Antontio+Brown) Without Gilbert
Terrible news, poor Gilbert, it must be killing him to be on sidelines all this time.
Antonio Daniels will have to step up again. Good news is he’s capable of that. No Roger Mason this time around though and the bench looks a lot weaker once one of the perimeter players goes down …. there will be a lot of pressure on Dee Brown to offer productive minutes and he’ll likely have to play 16-20 minutes a game. Pressure is big, then again an opportunity is there for him to shine. Unfortunately there’s no other options outside of Brown.
Perhaps they’ll use that final roster spot on another point guard.
by NBR on Sep 17, 2008 2:37 PM EDT 0 recs
Is it really that suprising?
I mean, Gil has had 2 surgeries on that knee, and was not healthy enough to touch a basketball until August. Its a set back for sure, but hardly a surprise
for now, i am just happy that Jason Taylor’s knee is getting better

I'd sign him to a one year deal
I don’t know if he’d sig for the minimum, but considering how Gil has our books tied up and we are still without a backup SF, it’d be pretty tight. If we could get Juan and Linton Johnson to combine for our ~1.2 mil for just this year, I think it’d be a bargain and would make us deeper.

GA is World B. Free
Compare Gil’s stats with World B. Free. Very similar.
by billyjoe on Sep 17, 2008 8:11 PM EDT 0 recs
Yeah, I just did
And they aren’t.
Career, pre-Arenas injury and Free sucking.
Here’s the comparison for their sixth seasons in the league.
Here’s the comparison between when they were both 25. Keep in mind this was Free’s best season.
Basically, Free scores more/36, but does so less efficiently. Arenas has him beat in every other category.
Do your research before you spew something out like that.

And it was Arenas' best season too
With the multiple knee surgenires, it probably will be his best year. And they look awfully similar at 25. It’s true that Arenas is more efficient, but only because he takes more three pointers. In the 78-9 season, Free scored all of those points wihtout a three. Plus, when the three was installed in 79, it was longer than the three Arenas has been shooting his entire career.
by billyjoe on Sep 18, 2008 6:36 PM EDT 0 recs
Arenas' best season was 05/06
Let’s stack this up again.
Not only is Arenas a more efficient scorer, but his assist rate towers over Free’s, he turns the ball over less, rebounds better and shoots less while still scoring more efficiently.
Free’s got him in points/36 and free throws attempted. That’s it.
If you want to stretch the point to say that means the two are similar, then go right ahead. It wouldn’t make sense, because Arenas has Free in nearly every category, but sure, go ahead.
While we’re on the subject of similar players, here’s another one. And another one. And I’m sure the diehart fans of the franchise will like this one and this one.
And, y’know, for kicks sake, let’s do this one and this one too.
But sure, only look at World B. Free.
You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Point - Pradmaster
I was surprised that Arenas stacked up nicely agaist Allen Iverson’s and Gary Payton’s numbers; and even more surprised that he compares favorably with HOF’ers Isiah Thomas and Earl Monroe -
The per-36 minute numbers for Iverson and Arenas are almost exactly the same; which makes me wonder why we don’t hear much negativity about the “shoot first” attitude of Point Guard Allen Iverson.
Makes me ponder the inequities in the media coverage of certain players like Iverson (who is almost universally praised) – vs the coverage of other players like Arenas (and the questions about “shoot first”, “making his teammates better”, etc…)

I have to disagree
I don’t think Iverson is universally praised, in fact I think the book on him is “shoot first”. He gets a LOT of negativity for being “shoot first”. Of course on that 6ers team that went to the finals nobody else COULD shoot, so I guess it was ok. Man that was a weird team to watch. But I digress…

No comparison is perfect
It’s true that GA is an excellent passer, much better than WBF. My point was that GA is halfway down the road to being a one-dimensional gunner on a bunch of losing teams. Nobody would have thought of paying WBF $111 million, and if GA doesn’t mature as a player, he’s half way down the road to being the next Allen Iverson, Mahmoud Abdul Rauf, or World B. Free.
