Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

"I don't want to touch a basketball until August," Arenas said. "After the last two seasons, I never really had time to recover. My knee is about 95 percent -- it's got to get stronger."

AP, via ESPN. That's a damn long time to wait before touching a basketball. Hopefully, that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with his rehab.

Not Technically a Lie

The quote was, “I don’t want to touch a basketball until August.” Sometimes we do things we don’t want to do. Like doing the laundry or mowing the lawn. Of course, he did look like he was enjoying himself.

I Want to Believe Him

Because it’s what he needs to do. He came back way too hard and too fast last offseason, which is why he reaggravated his knee in November. He then tried to come back too early during the season, and by playoff team he was having his knee drained again and he got that bone bruise. Sometimes the body just needs a break to heal, especially from a major injury to a crucial joint.

I’m fine with him laying off for awhile. As the team’s newly highest paid player, he needs to ensure he starts the season 100% healthy. It’s difficult for him to do because he’s such a competitor and he wants to get back in the gym as soon as possible, but it’s what he needs to do. He’s not going to forget how to play basketball. If anything, he’ll feel a lot more refreshed and energized than a lot of the league’s stars that will be spending the summer in China trying to get the US team the gold medal.

Please layoff the knee, Gil. Two to three months is plenty of time to get back in basketball shape.
