Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Much more to follow later, but he agreed to leave 16 million dollars total on the table. Kudos to the Times for getting this story first.

I'm in it like Bennett

Ernie Gruns may suspiciously have enough to retain Roger Mason Jr. —Might he take a hometown cut as well?

Perfect scenario for all….

Gilbert saves face by taking a better deal than $100 milli and the Wiz don’t give him a max.

I’ll take it.

Man of his word!

Just as Pradmaster and some others here thought…. Arenas takes less to help the team.

Arenas is a man of his word.

And Arenas becomes a Hero again...

Maybe Ernie is a genius after all.

Ernie praises him by giving him huge $$$ deal, Arenas asks for less, this is good for the team, media is all over it, and Arenas looks like the man, which good publicity will only help him get more $$$ in endorsements, and everyone is happy.

Did

Did Gilbert just give RMJr a 3 year 2.66M per-year contract? Or did he pick that number so he can say he turned down more than Deshawn made last offseason?

Hah

Hadn’t thought about DeShawn, but that’s interesting.

My guess is that it’s more that he wanted to get 15 million the first year, and with 10.5 percent raises, this was about as low as he could go while still meeting that goal.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Don't

I think his first year will be just over 14, but that could just be my “whiskey math”.

by Jheiser3 on Jul 3, 2008 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

You might be right actually

A Wizards Insider poster calculated the first year at around 14.6 million, if we assume 10.5 percent raises every year.

That still leaves us in a bit of trouble for 2009, but by his calculations, we’d still be about 4.5 million under the tax. That’s enough for someone decent.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

Ease

Its put us one deal, to increase that number, from a sizable 2nd move/piece/addition.

What???!!

This is crazy. An athlete like Gilbert actually sticks to his words about taking less money to help the team. Wow. I have to admit I got really sick of Gilbert’s drama this past season but now I am stuck firmly in his corner again.

sorry

this really doesn’t blow me away. it might as well be the max.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Jul 3, 2008 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

It's about 2.6 million per season

A little less than half the MLE.

It’s not a ton, but it might be enough for us to re-sign Mason, and it’s definitely enough to provide a little flexibility. 2.6 million could also get us someone like Tony Allen or Matt Barnes.

Ideally, he’d leave more, but I’m happy he at least left something. It’s a compromise for pretty much everyone involved.

alright

you have a point, but gil ain’t exactly mother teresa here, so i think i do too.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Jul 3, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

He could have left more, but at least he left something. Very few pros would have done that. Garnett sure didn’t.

Might as well be the Max....

ESPN is now finally reporting it… They show an interesting table: Gil’s contract is the 6th most expensive contract since 1999.

by se7en on Jul 3, 2008 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Gil...

BERT! Good to see. It would have been an absolute disaster if he didn’t re-sign. He’s the linchpin of Ernie’s plan; without Arenas in the fold, it all crumbles. Gil did stick to his word, which is great, given that no one is ever sure about anything he says, given his flakiness.

Now, with some health (knock on formica) next year, we’ll see what this team is capable of.

On the Mason front, I’d much rather see them sign a low-post banger for the money. The guy doesn’t need to score, but to police the lane and grab rebounds. Mason is completely expendable with Young on board, and having Mason around will only give Eddie the desire to play him and keep Nick on the bench, instead of getting him the experience he needs.
