James Posey

Celtics extend offer to Maggette - The Boston Globe

Bartelstein said "a lot of people are interested" in his client. An NBA source said the Wizards are "very interested" in Posey, and could make an offer once their situation with marquee free agent Gilbert Arenas is settled.

I doubt he waits long enough to get him, but he has been known to follow the money. Posey would bring a deefnse and 3 point shooting, who doesn't need that? Not sure I love the idea of locking him up for 4 or 5 years at 6Mil though.

Yo! This represents the view of the user who wrote the FanPost, and not the entire Bullets Forever community. We're a place of many opinions, not just one.

I'm glad...

To hear that the Wizards are “very interested”

I wonder how Gilbert Arenas, the Assistant GM, feels about Posey.

Next year would be his 10th in the league…he’s always been relatively healthy.

31 is not decrepit…..but yes, 4 or 5 years for him is too long.

He made $3,206,000 last year. The most he made in his career was $6,392,100 the year before in Miami.

I think the most the Wiz could offer him (depending on Gil of course) is the full MLE….say it rises to $5.6 million.

Would people be comfortable with 3 years and around….$17.8 million (with about 6% raises)?

I would.

But the problem is that more prominent contenders may offer him the full MLE too.

considering our need

yeah, i’d spring on 3 years of the MLE for posey, if he can guard lebron that is.

my only issue is i don’t really like him much because i think he’s a borderline dirty player.

Where does Posey play?

I love posey, and think he is a great addition to any team. My question is where does he play? Butler plays 40ms at the 3, Jamison and Blatche play most minutes at the 4, Stevenson and Young at the 2…now he could be an upgrade over Blatche and back up 3 in the near term, but would that hurt the long term development of those guys? Would that be giving up on them?

I see minutes being an issue already, and just don’t see how Posey “fits”

by Blatche4MVP on Jul 2, 2008 11:04 AM EDT   0 recs

minutes

I’m not worried about his minutes at all:
-Mason was playing 20+ minutes a night to begin with.
-Posey can play the 3 and allow Caron to play 32 minutes a night instead of 40+. Caron just got fresher for the playoffs.
-Nick is not yet a guy you bring in to defend, so Posey would be Eddie’s default choice there as well.
-He’d take some of Deshawn’s time depending on match-ups.

If you look at a depth chart there then yes, are names already in these slots. If you look at it like a game with 5 positions and a total 240 minutes there are a lot of possibilities.

I had another guard in mind for the same kind of role, Mo Evans.

I Remember

I remember Posey’s name coming up back when we were trying to trade Juan Carlos Navarro last summer. The consensus here at the time was against it because we didn’t feel Posey was good enough. Here is what Prada had to say when the rumor came up last year:

Wow. I really hope this is just a smokescreen or that there’s a lot more to this, because Posey straight up for Navarro is about as awful as it gets. Posey’s a nice veteran guy and still is a decent defender, but his skills are eroding fast. He’s only had a PER above the league-average once, and he’s looking for the full MLE. Trading Navarro, arguably the best guard in Spain, straight up to a division rival for Posey is an incredible waste of a great asset. There’s simply no way that’s the whole story. I’d imagine Etan Thomas or Brendan Haywood is out there for Posey instead of Navarro.

How things have changed. Posey was a key contributor to the Celtics championship while JCN floundered in Memphis (although he did torch us for something like 27 points in one game) and is now heading back to Barcelona after only one season.

I hope I’m not the only one here who has changed my mind about Posey. I think he’d be a great addition to this team, even at the full MLE, if we can afford it.

Yes!

I take back everything I said last summer about the guy. He certainly redeemed himself.

I’d go over the tax to sign him now. He’d be worth the full MLE, though I’d be wary about anything more than a 3-year commitment.

3 years and a little under 18 million sounds good to me.

Buying at a high?

Doesnt it always seem that a guy has a huge playoffs, plays much better then he had been, and then gets rewarded with a contract way above high actually value? I am just always nervous about a knee-jerk reaction to saying that just because Posey was huge in the playoffs, that he deserves an $18M contract. I think he is a great player, but do we really want to tie up $30M in AD, Etan, Haywood, Songalia, and Posey. I mean our bench is already full over over paid vets, do we need another? Do you think Posey really puts us over the edge? Because if he does, he is worth it, but if not all this does is continue to limit our flexibility…

I'd Rather Overpay for Posey...

... then overpay for Roger Mason Jr.

Legitimate concern

I agree, which is why I’d rather have him on a three-year deal, so that he expires at the same time we need to re-sign Caron. Plus, if we sign Posey, we’re definitely into the luxury tax, so the overpaying thing carries less weight.

posey has done it before

his contribution isn’t a flash in the pan. he played a big role when the heat won the title and he’s been a very good role player everywhere he’s been. he’s nowhere as good as robert horry, but he’s turned into that kind of player and would be a boon for the wizards, filling a desperate need for someone to spell caron for a bit.

speaking of minutes, EJ needs to town down the 40+ per night for each of AJ, CB, and GA. is it any wonder we can’t stay healthy for the playoffs?

by DarrellWalkerFan on Jul 2, 2008 11:50 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Couldn't have said it better.

EJ rides the Big 3 hard. If Posey comes in and takes some minutes from CB and AJ without seriously hurting production, I’m for it. But, I’m still not sure that he deserves the full midlevel, and I’m afraid that that is what it’ll take.

It's a legit concern

AD was just as valuable before he signed his deal, for example.

I think ideally we’d get Posey for half the MLE, but that’s not going to happen after the playoffs. I definitely think we need a guy like Posey, but maybe there are cheaper alternatives.

I like Posey’s teammate, Tony Allen, for half the MLE. He got buried in Boston, but he’s a very good defender, an excellent athlete, and is going to be one more year removed from knee surgery. They don’t seem to want him back after drafting two wings and devoting so much attention to Posey, so I think we could grab him for something like 3 years/9 million while still staying under the tax.

Anyone else who’s a cheaper alternative?

Precisely why getting a guy like Posey is critical to the Wizards success this year and next…

Arenas has a capable veteran backup in Antonio Daniels.

Jamison has a capable veteran backup in Songaila, AND a good replacemnet/backup in Blatche.

Caron cannot continue to play 40+ minutes, but there’s no one else on the Team that Eddie trusts that can play that position well…. (Blatche can play SOME 3, in certain situations, against certain matchups – and McGuire is still too raw)...

Besides – Posey would also cover another Wizards weakness – perimeter defense !

Celtics….Wizards…..add the Hornets and Lakers to the mix.

Chances of the Wiz landing him? Slim to none.

Posey to the Lakers

The Lakers need Posey’s defense way too much to let him slip past.

Posey goes to Miami and helps them win a championship with his rugged defense… gets no long term deal…

Posey then goes to the Celtics and is one of the MOST important defenders/role players/three point shooters on the team in their final run…

Posey goes to the Lakers and instills some MUCH NEEDED defense and puts the Lakers over the hump to win the Ship…

Why doesn’t this dude have a long-term deal by now?

who could be targeted?

here’s my list:

josh childress
james posey
michael pietrus
matt barnes
john salmons
tony allen
trevor ariza?
julian wright?

looking at the small forwards in the league, a lot of backups already have bigger contracts than what the MLE would be… i’d say posey is definitely worth the full MLE based on the market.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Jul 3, 2008 4:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think....

Ariza, Wright, and Childress may be out of our league.

Of the rest, Posey holds the least chance of coming to DC.

I wish Ivan Carter and Mike Jones could get more of a read on who the Wizards are interested in. Ernie runs a tight ship….even unnamed sources seem to be mum.

Ivan

Ivan mentioned Matt Barnes today but I didn’t get the feeling that name was coming from inside the organization.

Salmons contract is prohibitive. I like Barnes, Pietrus and Michael Finley. The question with Finley is how much the rest of the Spurs defense made him look good. I thought he had a pretty good defensive rep though. Is that right? While everyone is chasing the younger models we could add a guy who has been there and done it.

Thing with Barnes and Pietrus is they’re closer to 3/4’s than they are a 2/3 like Posey. If we miss on Posey and don’t want to add an NBAARP guy in Finley, we could do worse than Mo Evans. He is a defensive upgrade to RMJr, and shot nearly as well from as our resident sharpshooter.

by Jheiser3 on Jul 3, 2008 8:34 PM EDT   0 recs

Finley seems washed up to me

I’d take Evans though. I wish he’d be big enough to play the three, but it’s not a terrible alternative.

There’s also Devin Brown, who we almost signed last offseason. I’d take him for cheap.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

i think of all three of those guys

as 2 guards. like i do, say, jerry stackhouse. but i could be wrong.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Jul 3, 2008 9:05 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

i.e.

might as well sign roger and plan on playing stevenson as a backup 3.

by DarrellWalkerFan on Jul 3, 2008 9:06 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Ole

Did Devin Brown look old to anyone else? Looked it up, he turns 30 in December. Evans turns 30 in November so thats a wash.

Evans is an elite athlete though and tested that way during his draft combine. He’d be a defensive upgrade over RMJr and he shot 39.6% from 3 while with Orlando. Roger shot 39.8%. Yeah, I like Mo.

One trade name: Milwaukee just traded for a 3 and drafted one too. That makes Desmond Mason expendable. Downside: no 3pt shot.

Brown does have an old face...

But he makes JaVale McGee look like Elmer Fudd.

how come we’ve expressed no interest in him? not enough money? that seems like a shame to me. he could be a big-time role player.

He's restricted

And if we try to sign him for the full MLE, Atlanta could just match it.

The wait

Teams are lurking around Childress waiting for Smith to lock up a bunch of cash from ATL. Will ATL pay both?

Looks Like Posey Wants....

The full MLE and 4-5 years, something the Celtics are not willing to give him and something I’m not so sure the Wizards will have.
