Now it's officially official.
The i's are dotted, the t's are crossed, and Gilbert has put his signature on his new contract.

Anyone want to do the math?
I know the consensus is $2.5MM in space for this season. With the contracts we have what kind of room do we have in 2009 and (woo-hoo!) 2010?

OK, I did it myself...
...probably badly. It was a bit of a gut punch.
Best I can figure we’re now $2.2MM under the tax limit for 2008.
The bad news is that we’ve got $71.8MM (I’m guesstimating) in committed salary for 2009-2010, and if we assume we keep Nick and drop Pech we’re at $73.5MM. (Both figures assume that Dee Brown’s contract is or becomes guaranteed.) I think that all Gilbert’s magnanimity accomplished was to keep us out of the tax next year, as best guess is it’s right around that number.
For 2010 Etan, AD, Brendan, McGuire, and Brown come off, so I estimated we’re at $57.5MM (again assuming we keep Nick/drop Pech). To point out the obvious we’re not going to add a stud at that point, and we’ll have to re-sign BTH (as well as Caron in 2011).
The reasonable conclusions/alternatives are:
- No major changes through summer 2010 unless through trade.
- The trades are likely to be next summer or in the 2009-2010 season.
- If we look pretty good, the focus will be on adding an solid SG through trade, and we’ll have to focus on teams trying to get in the mix in 2010.
The disappointing thing is that while we have flexibility, it really only works for us if we end up needing to blow it up. There’s little we can do to get better unless someone is desperate for our 2010 expiries. Of course, we do have two or three all-stars, so the glass is half full…
This analysis welcomes criticism and bulletproofing…

We did the tax numbers for this year already
Here.

Add on Dee Brown’s contract, and we probably have a little more than 2.5 million this year.
As far as next year, it’s important to note that the tax level will go up, so we might not be in as worse shape as it seems right now.

I adjusted Antawn b/c $9.9MM can't get him to $50MM over 4 years
I assume the tax level will go up next year, but it won’t be much above our committed payroll + Nick. Hopefully we have room to sign our first round pick.

Hmm...
Good point. When I e-mailed Jones today, I calculated Antawn’s salary if it started at 9.9 million, and it only added up to just under 49 million. Like you said, he needs to make more this season to get to 50 million.
That might explain the discrepancy in our tax numbers and what the Wizards are saying.

How about I show my work...
Here’s what I had:
Player 2009 2010
Gilbert Arenas $14,206,000 $15,697,630
Antawn Jamison $10,695,000 $11,817,975
Caron Butler $9,249,980 $10,030,970
Etan Thomas $6,864,200 $7,354,500
Antonio Daniels $6,200,000 $6,600,000
Brendan Haywood $5,500,000 $6,000,000
Darius Songaila $4,234,000 $4,526,000
DeShawn Stevenson $3,616,071 $3,883,929
Andray Blatche $2,739,669 $3,000,000
Nick Young $1,602,960 $1,714,800
Oleksiy Pecherov $1,446,720 $1,547,640
Dominic McGuire $711,517 $825,497
Dee Brown $711,517 $825,497
JaVale McGee $1,160,200 $1,247,200
Total Salaries: $68,937,834 $75,071,638
Apologies for the formatting. Note that both Pech and Nick are included in the 2010 numbers.
I assumed that Dee Brown was signed for the minimum.
I assumed AJ started at $10.7MM, otherwise he can’t get to $50MM.
I assumed Gil started at $14.2MM, which gets him to $111MM with max raised, but the $14.5MM number that’s talked about could be right as well.
So I end up at $2.18MM, or at $1.88MM.
It is likely that AJ starts at more than the reported $9.9 and possible that he starts higher than the $10.7 I assumed. Either way, the compromise seems to be about keeping us out of the tax next year.
We really need to do a deal…

I know we can’t assume anything, but I can’t see Ernie making the same mistake twice and not using some of his expiring contracts to make a deal in 2009-10.

Great to see that there are still some “team players” out there . I read an article on Comcast Sportsnet (http://comcastsportsnet.tv/pages/wizards_landing?blockID=9651&feedID=315) that said he took less money so he could help out the team and not screw them down the line. Admittedly, he is still taking $111, which to us normal people is a bit ridiculous, but he stuck around and so did the others boys so we are happy in the district!
