Kings Want Gilbert Too!!

Link.

Then, according to my sources, the Warriors quickly burned the phones and offered former Warrior Gilbert Arenas a maximum-level contract, one that would pay him more than $100 million over five years. My source told me that Gilbert received a flurry of phone calls from the Warriors in the first 30 minutes of free agency.

...

According to a source close to Arenas, the three-time all star is mulling the offers but is leaning towards staying with the Wizards and is willing to take less than the maximum if it will help Grunfeld make other moves he needs to make this summer.

...

Also, I heard from a very reliable source that the Sacramento Kings contacted Arenas and said they are willing to do "whatever it takes" to land his services even if they have to "trade their entire team." Guess the Maloof brothers want to matter again.

Yikes.  The Gilbert Arenas sweepstakes has begun.  There is a lot more interest in his services than any of us could have predicted.

Obviously

Ernie Grunfeld knew (or suspected) that there would be interest … He made an IMMEDIATE offer to Arenas for the maximum 6-years $124M…

Smart on Ernie’s part – Arenas can’t get that contract with anyone else unless they do a sign and trade…

The ball is now in Gilbert’s court to see if he’ll take that contract, ask for a sign-and-trade, or take less to help the Wizards sign additional players…

But

Sacramento is over the cap. They could only do a sign-and-trade, and the only guy I’d want is Kevin Martin.

Otherwise, they can want Gil, but they could never have him.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

what about

here we are, I’m running with it: (08-09 numbers)

Gilbert (16) and DS (3.6) and Pesh (1.4) for
Kevin Martin (9.2)
Artest (8.4)
Shelden Williams (3.4)

AD –
KMartin – Young
Haywood – Williams – Etan – McDLeague
Jamison – Blatche – Songalia
Butler – Artest – McGuire

Have to find a backup PG though. We could either move Artest at the trading deadline or let his deal expire. Shelden Williams has a Team option for 4M next season which we could pick up or let expire. Martin would have to be the center of the deal though. He signed an extension so these numbers only work if his full salary is his cap figure this “business year”. ESPN still shows him with a Poison Pill Provision. I believe that expired today or will expire on the 9th.

i don't see

sactown giving up martin.

anyone else though.

if i were EG, i’d rather do something with sactown than max gilbert now.

we’ve already got a franchise player in caron.

Then why bother?

Why bother going after a leading scorer in the league and a star that sells tickets if you can’t part with a 25 year old 2guard making 50Mil over the next 5 years? This isn’t about team building its about getting people back into the arena.

Sactown isn't trading Martin

And they’re definitely not trading Martin and Artest.

I think we need to look elsewhere for sign-and-trades. The Kings don’t have much to offer us.

You know you'll get devoured by Cheaney, Wallace, and Juwan Howard.

"Then you'll get nothing and like it Spaulding."

Martin is in the deal or don’t bother. They’re trading for a star, its not that far fetched. I could actually see them doing it because Gilbert sells tickets, Martin sells popcorn. The Maloofs would turn Gilbert into the main attraction and make the team very attractive to for a move to Vegas.
