Signing Antawn Jamison: Speculation Behind Purported Numbers
4-years, $50 million.....seems like a lot, but AJ is worth it. But what will Jamison's cap number be for next year, and how much does that leave the Wizards for Arenas and others?
Ivan Carter is reporting that Grunfeld have may have reacted to a 5-year, $100 million offer from Golden State by pushing his initial offer of $100 million to $124 over 6 years.
But will the Wiz have money for anyone else? The chances are looking slim......so much for pay cuts.

Ultimately
I think Gilbert takes more than 100 million but less than the max to stay in DC.

Would not be surprised Gil takes 115 mill
or the max. I just hope a injury jinx team like the Wiz will carry at least 14 players next season.

Did we really sign AJ for $50million?
is that a definite? si is still reporting its a 44million deal so I’m confused as to what the reality is. i hope Gilbert doesn’t take the max. These negotiations have me very nervous. I would hate to see all of our cap room gone.

Thats the public/reported number
That doesn’t mean its the actual number. This wouldn’t be the first, or millionth, time that an agent chose to broadcast inflated terms. Its harder to do with the NBA bargaining agreement than say football where the initial numbers reported are utterly meaningless.
It could include a signing bonus spread over the course of the contract. NBA teams can pay as much as 20% of the contract in the form of a bonus that is pro-rated over the life of a contract. So while his cap figure could be lower he’d be getting a large chunk up front.
If he received a 10M signing bonus over four years thats 2.5M per year prorated.
1st yr 7M salary, 2.5 bonus for a cap figure of 9.5M (since it was reported the first year is ‘cap friendly’)
2nd yr 7.95M salary, 2.5 bonus, 10.45 #
3rd yr, 8.905M salary, 2.5 bonus, 11.495 cap #
4th year 10.1M salary, 2.5 bonus, 12.6 cap #
Thats a 4 year 44M contract…

OR
Since signing bonuses are rare in today’s NBA – it’s more likely that he received a 4 year $50 Million dollar contract, with the first year UNDER $10 Million – JUST AS REPORTED.
Antawn Jamison signed a contract EXTENSION. A contract extension is allowed raises up to 10.5% of the final year of the existing contract. Jamison made $16.3 Million in the final year of his contract. In other words, his raises can be as high as $1.7 Million per season.
Start with the first year under $10 Million, and the contract terms look like this:
Year 1 $9,900,000
Year 2 $11,617,810
Year 3 $13,335,620
Year 4 $15,053,430
TOTAL $49,906,859
I’m not sure why everyone wants to make Jamison’s contract such a complicated issue by throwing in signing bonuses, or saying that the contract is really only $44M…. when it’s perfectly obvious he could get a common, standard, uncomplicated 4-year $50M deal..

Hmm...
I didn’t realize that. That gives us a little more room than expected this year, but really kills us down the road.

Don't worry, be happy....
I wouldn’t worry about the last year of the contract… by that time, a $15 Million expiring contract will be a heavy trade chip (see Gasol for Kwame Brown)....

Did Jamison really sign an extension?
I thought extensions had to be signed before or during the last season of a current contract.
But extension is the language that people are using…...and that’s why I’m no salary cap expert.
Great point.

He did
That’s why they were rushing to get him signed before July 1. The season officially ends then.

Really? Are you sure?
I’ve never heard of 10.5% of the old contract. Where’d you see that? Its always been 10.5% raise from his first year. Says so here too, under the Bird Exception: http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#19
A player can receive raises up to 10.5% of the salary in the first season of the contract.

Yes
For contract extensions the Maximum Raise is 10.5% of the salary in the last season of
the contract being extended.

And
Ivan Carter’s blog this morning confirms the first year number is $9.9 Million
http://blog.washingtonpost.com/wizardsinsider/
“As I reported yesterday and in this morning’s paper, the team was able to reach a four-year agreement with Antawn Jamison on a $50 million deal and his cap number for next season will be $9.9 million, according to my sources.”

Awesome!
Great point Rook. This means that Gil won’t have to come that far down in order to help us sign a free agent this summer. I hope that’s what Gil does.

Eh
It’s the difference of about half a million dollars. I doubt it’ll do much.
