Around SBN: Tiger Woods, Tony Romo Grouped Together At Pebble Beach

D: Washington Wizards: JaVale McGee is a decent enough prospect. I just thought there were much better players available. Chalmers would have been a great fit on this team. Hickson, Koufos and Jordan all look like better long term projects than McGee. There could be an uprising of young teams in the East in 2009. Miami and Chicago could easily return to prominence, Atlanta and Philadelphia look primed to become perennial playoff teams, Toronto could move in with the elite and Milwaukee and Charlotte have brought in coaches with a history of immediate improvement. The Wizards need to make some bold moves just to keep up. That didn’t happen in the draft.

Hoops Analyst's draft grades. To be fair, he grades on a curve, so there are teams that did just as bad or worse.

I'm Sick

I’m just so sick of this laissez-faire attitude from Ernie. I give him his props for where he’s taken this team, but seriously, has he got any plans to take the team any farther? It sure doesn’t seem like it. I know we’re all supposed to be over our disappointment by now, but every time I think about JaVale effing McGee I keep thinking that Ernie just doesn’t give a shit. It’s like he’s saying, “Oh well, despite every other team in the East improving, we’ll probably still be at least an 8 seed no matter what I do, and as long as I get at least 2 home playoff games a season and keep trading players for cash, Abe will be happy and I’ll get to keep showing up for work.” I mean, he’s got one of the easiest jobs in the NBA right now. Since the Kwame/Butler trade, he’s practically just sat on his hands. Oh, I forgot, he signed a couple of draft picks here, a mediocre free agent there. We are in Washington, so what better attitude to have than “good enough for government work,” right? Meanwhile, the rest of the league has been wheeling and dealing their way upward. Boston and Orlando are two teams that leap-frogged us in the standings this season. Luckily, the Bulls and Heat got worse. But next season the Bulls will have Derrick Rose and the Heat will have a healthy D-Wade, Michael Beasley, Mario Chalmers, and maybe even Shawn Marion. We’ll have JaVale effing McGee.

Unless Ernie does more in free agency than simply resign Antawn and Gil, I sincerely feel that any improvement the Wizards have next season won’t be because of anything Ernie has done. If JaVale McGee turns out to be a beast and contributes right away, I’ll gladly eat my words. Something tells me I’ll be going hungry, though.

In response to your rant

Other than the top two picks, I don’t think there was a prospect in this draft that would have brough immediate returns and would have factor into the Wizards player rotation. EG is limited by an owner who will not spend big. We found that out last year when Wizards would not even increase the roster to the 15 man limit, even as injuries did not even allow for full court practices! Until Gil and Jamison are re-signed, he can not make any moves…unless it is determine one or the other or both are not returning.
Physically, McGee is off the charts. I have read nothing that states he has a bad attitude, so drafting him was well worth the gamble on future greatness. This team has yet to go into the playoffs with a roster that is injury free. That is another big reason for not blowing up the roster. Maybe if they re-construct the training team and team training format, that will be as important as trying to sign some big name FA or drafting some big name rookie. Again, other than the top 2, none of the other rookies in this draft was going to change EJ player rotation for the coming season.

I Don't Blame Ernie For Last Season

I feel Ernie did a good job in last year’s draft, though nothing particularly great. Nick Young was an obvious selection after having fallen into his lap. D-Mac was a good find in the second round, but I doubt his contributions to the team will be more than minimal for the next few seasons. The injuries our team suffered last season were horrible, and I agree that Ernie was hamstrung by Abe’s stinginess.

All that said, that was last season. While I was a bit wary about standing pat last season, I was OK with it. This season I think it’s just foolhardy. Most of the league’s teams are in complete makeover mode, with the top two teams having both made major roster changes that brought in impact players in the past year, and Ernie just drafted a guy who at most will help us 3-4 seasons down the road. Not only that, but he reached for the guy, which makes the trade value of this pick even less. Then he goes and sells our 2nd pick. This tells me that he thinks we really don’t need any help right away. I need to reiterate what so many other people have said, that there were players available who already know how to play basketball and were capable of helping right away, and instead Ernie said, “Whatever, I’ll just draft stick boy and see if he works out.” I hope he does too. I’m sure he’s a great kid and would love to see pictures of him in a chef hat dishing food to airmen at Andrews Air Force Base. But he’s not going to bring the current roster closer to a championship, IMO. He may help a future roster to that level, who knows. But there is just no sense of urgency on Ernie’s part, and I just don’t understand it or like it.

I also think it’s foolhardy to simply cross your fingers and hope that the Big 3 stay healthy. All three haven’t been healthy together since 2005-06, when they lost in the first round to Cleveland. So they’re not likely to get and stay healthy for an entire season, and even if they do, they probably won’t be good enough to go any farther than they already have. We need more solid contributors if we’re going to progress, not question marks to hope and pray for. We have maybe a 3-4 season window of opportunity to compete for a championship before Antawn gets too old, but you would never have guessed this based on the way Ernie just handled the draft.

But enough ranting, I’m not saying anything that hasn’t been said already. I think I’m over it now, it just took me longer than most people. I hope either Ernie surprises me this summer or that JaVale is much better much sooner than we all think he will be.
