Ernie is basically saying, “if you aren’t going to get immediate help, swing for the fences.”

I don't know...I'm looking at the "weaknesses" and

•Extremely weak physically
• Poor fundamentals
• Footwork/Post-moves
• Decision making (guess he won’t have the ball in his hands much)
• Basketball IQ (i.e., stupid)
• Atrocious defender (He’ll fit right in!)
• Poor activity level/Doesn’t hustle
• Mental/Physical toughness?
• Soft?
• Long ways away from contributing
• High bust potential

Yikes, ya’ll…just…Yikes.

Chad Ford rips the pick

I’m not a huge fan of this pick, especially with a proven guy like Darrell Arthur on the board. McGee is a physical specimen, very long and athletic, and he has some skills. But he’s very soft and looks like he’s years away. He reminds me of Andray Blatche.

I wonder why exactly is he considered "soft"

Just because he doesn’t have strength? Or is he not hard nosed.

Kid can run and seems to have pick and pop-ability….and can block shots. Nice lower body strength is not too shabby.

Give him credit..

DraftExperss has a big write up on his workout and he has put on 8 pounds of muscle sent the end of school. So he knows he has to get stronger and tougher. But if you look at the film of him you can see he is not a physical player down low. But being able to block shots like he shows can not be taught.

Like I said earlier...the guy can block shots..

then you go from there. You just have to trust the body of work EG has done. This guy has a lot of physical skills and this team surely needed a shot blocker. But I do feel the guy is very soft.

great pick

An athletic seven footer? At 18, that’s great. Speaks english, even better. So what if it’s a bust. Most 18 are bust anyway. Mason is better than the median18, and he was a free agent.

by billyjoe on Jun 26, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

serious

So what if they already have 3 seven footers? Put Pech and McGee in NDBL, if one plays well, then that’s a good pick. Grunfeld already got a decent contributor out of a lottery ticket on Blatche.

We need one of these guys (Blatche, Pech, McGee) to really work out. Hell, you can’t teach tall. Two of them can be busts, but if one works out, it’s a huge jump for this squad.

What I object to is this idea that we need another project. That’s on Ernie there. We needed someone who could play right now, and there were guys sitting right there who could. At the very least, a trade-down could have worked.

None of that is McGee’s fault, but I’m still not happy about the pick.

by TremendousUpside on Jun 26, 2008 10:26 PM EDT reply actions

THis is hilarious.
The problem is he’s extremely far from reaching his full potential—so far that you have to wonder if he’ll ever make it considering the way he looks at times on the court. Struggles to establish position and finish in the paint, settles for some incredibly awkward off-balance shots, and is virtually a black hole with his passing skills—averaging 4 turnovers for every 1 assist. Looks very disinterested at times, doesn’t hustle, gives up on plays, late getting back down the floor, and might be the worst man to man defender we’ve ever evaluated in the post. Gets pushed around, gambles excessively for steals, has no stance or fundamentals, doesn’t move his feet, and is a complete non-factor even against the mediocre competition he faces. According to Synergy’s "PlayType QuickTable stats," McGee was scored on 66% of the time when being posted up in the paint (against the likes of Fresno State, Utah State, Houston, etc). Is light years away from being able to compete on an NBA level defensively, if ever.

To be fair,

Here is the paragraph before the one you quoted:

Rare physical specimen—has an almost unprecedented combination of size, length (7-6), athleticism and fluidity, packed on a frame that should easily be able to fill out nicely. Has excellent hands, runs the floor exceptionally well, and is extremely reactive off his feet. Has an intriguing variety of skills too—the ability to knock down 3-pointers, put the ball on the floor, and execute some incredibly smooth pivot moves in the paint, finishing elegantly off the glass with excellent extension and touch. Gets off the ground impressively and can really be a factor as a shot-blocker or on the offensive glass. A late bloomer who barely played in high school and averaged just 10 minutes a game as a freshman—the sky is clearly the limit on his upside.

My Only Complaint

So what does a team do that has few healthy guards, no healthy backup center, no interior defense or toughness, and a plethora of short and/or undersized forwards do? Draft two short and/or undersized forwards, of course.

Although everywhere I’ve looked lists Bill Walker as a SF, I should have noted that McGee is actually a center, although he looks no bigger than Blatche (PF).

Bill Walker...

probably has one of the sickest highlight reels of anyone in this draft. This guy was a lottery pick before his knee injuries. It doesn’t always mean doom…think Leon Powe.

by Romans12 on Jun 26, 2008 11:44 PM EDT reply actions

Which Highlight Reel?

The one I just looked at featured some nice dunks, but they were all (except one) in transition with no one around him. The one dunk where there was contact was one guy coming from behind to slap his arm before he dunked. Anybody in the NBA can throw down a nice dunk when he’s all by himself. I want to see what he can do when someone gives him the Brendan Haywood to LeBron treatment.
